P2V Windows Server with multiple logical disks - creates 1 vmdk

$

Hi - when using VMware Converter what is the reason for creating 1 vmdk file when doing a P2V of a server that has 2 disks? Why doesn't it create two vmdk files?

Do most people just run the converter several times selecting 1 disk at a time??

When I select the C: and D: volumes of the server and resize them - instead of creating 2x15GB vmdk's it creates a 30GB vmdk.

What's best??

Unable to complete vCenter Converter agent installation on %server%. Errror code 1,603

I attemptred to convert a Windows 2000 Server SP4 server to a VMware ESXi server 4.1.

I started the process from a Windows XP PC running VMware-converter-all-4.3.0-292238 and I got the error "Unable to complete vCenter Converter agent installation on %server%. Errror code 1,603".

Reading in forums it looks that the right VMware Converter Standalone version is up to 4.1: is it correct?

To solve the problem I installed VMware converter standalone 3.x on the Windows 2000 box, but I don't think it is the best choice.

Can anybody please help understandiong what is the right way to convert a Windows 2000 server?

P2V of Centos Server fails with key can't be retrieved

Hi,

I'm running Converter Standalone version 5.1.0 and am attempting to P2V a physical Centos 5.3 server to my vSphere 5.1 environment. When the conversion job kicks-off, the helper VM is created, it powers on and boots up ok, the job log says "Connected to the Converter helper server on the destination virtual machine" and then the helper VM powers off and deletes and the job fails with the message "Failed at 1%. A general system error has occurred: Network error. Host <hostname of source machine> key can't be retrieved (return code 2)".

I am able to SSH to the server and login as root without a problem. When Converter initially connects to the machine when I'm setting up the job, it retrieves all it's details OK and shows me all its configuration information OK etc. I'm thinking that the "key can't be retrieved" in the failure message is the clue, but I don't know what "key can't be retrieved" means.

HELP!

Regards,

George.

How can I uninstall the vCenter Standalone Converter?

My vCenter Standalone Converter 5.5 installation is corrupted on a Windows Server 2012 R2 server.  Using the typical uninstall procedure through the Control Panel results in a "Could not stop service" message.  This is the message I receive regardless of whether I try to uninstall, repair, or reinstall the application.  Can someone direct me to a list of the various files and registry entries that need to be deleted to effectively remove the application to the point where I can reinstall it again?  Thanks.

Converter 5 does not recognize LVM partition on Oracle Linux 6

I've got two physical servers running Oracle Linux Server release 6.3 64-bit.  They each have a /boot partition that is ext4 and the rest on an LVM partition:

/dev/mapper/vg_cleveland-lv_root /                       ext4    defaults        1 1
UUID=3d37688e-305a-4974-9bb7-f02232b78790 /boot                   ext4    defaults        1 2
/dev/mapper/vg_cleveland-lv_swap swap                    swap    defaults        0 0
tmpfs                   /dev/shm                tmpfs   defaults        0 0
devpts                  /dev/pts                devpts  gid=5,mode=620  0 0
sysfs                   /sys                    sysfs   defaults        0 0
proc                    /proc                   proc    defaults        0 0

vCenter Converter is only recognizing the /boot partition in the "Data to copy" section "Select volumes to copy".

If I go forward the conversion fails when trying to reconfigure the VM.  I've looked through the user guide and googled a bit but I can't seem to find why the ext4 LVM partition is not being recognized by Converter 5.

Hello friends, how are you?

I'm trying to convert a physical machine with Redhat 3 have the latest version of VMware vCenter Converter (5.5.3)

On the machine with Redhat I have the firewall disabled, the IP as the name resolves well and are within the same network as the host.

At one point, after partition and format the disk on the target server, I get the following error in the log:

FAILED: On a general system error occurred:

Network error. Host 192.168.0.142 key can not be retrieved. (return code 2)

Can someone help me?

Thanks a lot!

XenServer 5.6 - CentOS/RHEL (xen-kernel) VMS to ESXi 5.5

Well. My first question here, has anybody done a migration from XenServer 5.6 to ESXi?

I can run the converter fine, and I'll get a VM on the other side I know this won't boot as the VM is using the xen-kernel. The target machine I've been testing with I've installed the default kernel and then run the converter process. I'm trying to boot other side with the distro's .iso ( in this case centos 5.3 ) and repairing the grub configuration, however this is where I'm stuck.

I'll get a number of errors, however I think this is due to the way the disks operate. In Xen, these are IDE devices and the migration process configures these using a SAS Logic controller and some "magic stuff" happens converting my /dev/xvda to a /sda device.

My last attempts have got this at a kernel panic - "stuck.setuproot moving /dev failed" and then init dies.

As most people have figured out. There's tons of doco moving off ESXi to Xen, but not the other way around!

Anyone have a script to remove all the HP/Compaq agents after conversion?

Hi,

With both old school P2V and the new converter tool, we have to uninstall about 10 HP agents/tools from "Add/Remove Programs", manually uninstall the HP  Network Configuration Utility, and delete two registry keys that "Add/Remove Programs" does not remove after the conversion is completed.

Does anyone have any sweet scripts or tools to do all this automatically?

Thanks

Converter Standalone Linux P2V fails to clone /boot

New thread from my post in http://communities.vmware.com/message/1341524#1341524.

I'm stuck with the issue of failed cloning of the /boot partition at 3%.

Source machine is a RHEL 3 box.

The DNS suffixes and servers are configured correctly in the converter task. I confirmed with tcpdump that the helper VM really does establish an SSH connection to the source machine. I also tried using only IP addresses in the task.

There is no firewall blocking communications between the converter server, the helper VM, source machine, vCenter or the ESX Host.

Note that I cloaked some specific information with stuff like or in those logs:

Any help on this?

@vmweathers

What exact commands am I supposed to run from another Linux machine to imitate the helper VM? I not entirely sure on what I'm supposed to run from the logs.

The issue in http://communities.vmware.com/message/1228109#1228109 seems not to be related.

What kind of sshd configuration issue do you have in mind?

Steps for converting back to LVM configuration

$

I tried a hot clone of a RHEL 4 server via VMware Converter v4.0.1 to a ESXi 3.5u4 host, but I discovered that even though LVM on the source is supported, LVM is just not "preserved" in the target environment. Instead every LVM volume is converted into a partition. (See data file snippet for before and after changes)

I saw these articles but they are just too unrealistic for multiple server conversions:

http://communities.vmware.com/docs/DOC-5751

http://technodrone.blogspot.com/2009/01/converting-linux-virtual-machine-with.html

Does anyone have the steps for easily converting back to an LVM volume group configuration rather than having multiple VM disks assigned to the VM?

The only other option I see would be to build out a new guest VM, reconfigure it (i.e add packages, custom application installs, etc) then have to do an rsync of the data from the physical server over to the virtual one.

Converter Standalone Agent installation failed (Error Code: 1618)

I have two pretty much identical Windows 2000 servers that I am doing P2V conversions using Converter 4.0.1

My first server converted without any problems...however, my second server gets to the Converter Standalone Agent deployment and then fails with an error message "Converter Standalone Agent installation failed on 'XXX.XX.XXX.XXX'. Error Code: 1618.

I have used Port Query against the ports that are indicated in support document 1010056 and noticed that port 9089 is "listening" on the first server but "not listening" on the second server...I suspect this is the problem, but I have no idea how to resolve it...how do I go about making port 9089 a "listening" port?

I wanted to try Vmware technologies with the free versions at first and buy it later more advanced version. However i'm trying to fix this issues since 5 days, finding nothing on the internet and desperate about this.

I have installed VMware vSphere Hypervisor v3.5 on a server (i had to use this version instead of v5 as the CPU is 32bit, not 64). I have installed here a Windows Server 2003 R2 guest machines, which is fine. I used VMware vCenter Converter Standalone v5 (from my Windows 7 laptop) and made a Vmware Player v4 vmdk image which was ok, i have start it with Vmware Player v4.0.

The problem is when i try to restore it (under a new name) to the Hypervisor v3.5 server it always fails at 10% with:

"FAILED: An error occurred during the conversion:
'The operation experienced a network error"

I have copied the vmdk and vmx files to my laptop and starting the Converter Standalone v5 version but the issue is the same. I have done thing from another physical server (with Windows 2003 on it) and there it fails also exactly with the same and 10%. I have disabled SSL in converter v5, the issue is the same. I have downloaded and tried to restore it with Vmware Converter Standalon v4.3, that one fails at 12%.

What network error can be?? The Hypervisor is functioning correctly, the backup from there is working correctly only the restore is an issue.

"H:" is a local drive. Please advise who can and if you need more info.

Hi everyone,

I am trying to convert a ubuntu 10.04 server to esxi. Converter version VMware-converter-all-5.0.0-470252.

But failed when 1% percent.

Here is convert log:

At 18:46, converter tells me can not got helper ip address.

So, I started convert with setting helper address, but this time still the same. The job stopped when connting to helper server.

I looked the ubuntu logs got some error:(/var/log/message)

and nothing else.

I think that, convert will install an helper in my ubuntu server, so must have an log? but here is no log.

So, how can I find where the problem is? Or else can I install a helper manually?

Thanks a lot.
