I'm trying to P2V a Live Gentoo amd64 machine using vCenter Converter Standalone 4.0.1 to my ESXi 4 server. The process gets fairly far, high 90's, then errors with the following satus message: FAILED: An error occurred during the conversion.
These are the last few lines of the log highlights:
Error: Failed to reconfigure the target virtual machine.
Installing the GRUB boot loader.
Starting the reconfiguration of the target virtual machine
When I boot the Virtual Machine, it says Operating system not found.
For starters, I'm not doing a straight forward copy; I'm resizing various partitions due to size constraints, and I'm not copying one mounted drive because I don't need it. Also, the machine has IDE disks, but I see that the VM is configured to use SCSI Virtual Device Nodes.
I read this post http://communities.vmware.com/thread/264131 but I'm not even getting that far.
I tried reconfiguring teh VM from vCenter but it states "reconfiguration is not supported for the selected source". (Is Gentoo simply not a supported VM OS for this tool/utility? If so, what options do I have for converting it?)
Any ideas as to what might be causing this or suggestions on what to do?
