How Do I Install VMware-Converter in Ubuntu 18.04-LTS

$

Hello.  I am trying to install VMware Converter in Ubuntu 18.04-LTS.  I have no idea how to do this.  Install documentation for the operating system or just linux in general is virtually non-existent.  I read the current documentation and looks like I can only install this latest version in Windows, however there is an open source download available.  Can someone please help?  I downloaded the latest file.  The name of the file is VMware-converter-6.2.0-7348398.odp, of which I extracted all the way to VMware-converter-6.2.0-7348398.odp.tar, a tar file.  In general, I just want VMware Converter installed on my linux operating system.  Any help or guides\documentation would be appreciated.

Converting Windows 98

I have taken a couple of approaches to convert an existing Windows 98 physical machine to run in VMware (I am new to this, BTW).  I first tried converting the machine using the remote option but I got an error when it was attempting to install the agent.  Next I pulled the hard disk from the PC and put it in the same PC that I plan to run the VM on (WinXP Pro).  I used the local machine option and chose the hard disk containing the Windows 98 installation.  But the Wizard balked at not being able to find the OS and continuing led to eventual failure.  Not one to give up, I downloaded and installed Ghost 10 and successfully built an .sv2i image.  However, when I go to build the new vm from this standalone vm using this image I get an error when it tries to detect the operating system (Unable to determine guest operating system) and I cannot continue.

So, I thought Windows 98 was supported in a vm but am I wasting my time in trying to do this?

Thanks

Linux P2V issue: unable to query the live Linux source machine

We're trying to convert some servers in a remote datacentre; the owners have given us SSH access through the firewall and even supplied the root password (I can confirm this by actually SSH-ing into the boxes, so that's definitely working).  However, the actual conversion process is going nowhere near as smoothly.  Every time we try, the conversion process refuses to start, telling us that it was "unable to query the live Linux source machine"

Some details:

Converter version: 6.1.1 (as Administrator), running on a Windows 10 PC (I've tried converter 4.x and 5.x as well, though)

Source: Dell box running RHEL 5.11

Destination: vSphere 5.1 cluster (not that we actually get that far)

I've checked what seem to be the usual causes for this; /tmp is writable, there are no "echo" statements in anyone's .bashrc, and root has a proper shell (/bin/bash), and still no joy.  Can anyone suggest what we might have missed?  I've attached the logs from the failed conversion as well.

Thanks,

Ian.

Converter Hangs at 1%

I've got a machine that I've been tasked to virtualize, but I never get any farther than 1%, which is wierd because a collegue of mine P2Ved this server a couple months ago and it went through. (we had to delete that VM because it wasn't brought online in time.)

The conversion doesn't fail, it just stays at 1%.

Server is a Windows Server 2003 R2 box and it's main role is Raisers Edge. I turned off all the SQL services per another post. I'm not quite sure what else to include, other than the logs.

Thanks.

Conversion failure at 98%. Fails during reconfiguration.

I've tried many times to clone an XP Profession SP3 system.  I'm running VSphere 5 (essentials license) and my ESXi servers are all version 5.  The converter worker service actually terminates when the conversion fails.  Also when it fails the XP machine will say that it had a delayed write error for several files in c:\windows\$reconfig$\.

Displayed on the converter is:

FAILED: A general system error occurred:

No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it.

or:

FAILED: A general system error occurred:
Remote server closed connection after 0 response bytes read

I've tried the conversion as a domain admin and local admin.  Local conversion and remote conversion.  Two different ESXi servers and through the VSphere server.  I tried an Acronis backup and conversion to VMware Workstation and then conversion to ESXi server with the converter with the same results.  The computer was started with a clean boot (no third-party services running) prior to conversion.  A check disk was run without error.  I've used standalone converter 4.3 and 5.0.  I've also tried the configure machine option following the failure with the same results.

There is plenty of space on the source hard drive and the destination datastore.  There is no firewall on the source or between the source and the ESXi server.  I've uploaded the logs but I'm not sure they'll be of use because when exported they say that the task specifics aren't available because of a problem with the converter (probably because the worker process terminates during the failure).

Any help would be appreciated.  This one has me frazzled.

Converter unable to connect to network share

Hi! I am trying to clone a physical machine to a Vmware Server  machine (running under windows) and I keep have the message cannot connect to network share even if I change the credentials (connect as...)

However I can connect from both ends, on the machine hosting vmware converter and on the 'to be virtualized' host as well.

I enter the future name of the machine in the first box, then I enter:

10.x.x.x\d$ or
10.x.x.x\ShareName

also tried

VmwareServerName\d$ or
VmWareServer\ShareName

VmwareServer being in the DNS of course

Always the same problem... unable to connect to the network share

WHAT AM I DOING WRONG??

Converter is running on XP SP2 on my laptop

Vmware Server is running on a P4 running XP SP2 as well

Simple File Sharing is disabled everywhere

The To be Virtualized host is a XP SP1 Pentium4

plz help me understand this!

P2V Windows XP

What's the best way to P2V a Windows XP machine?  I see the standalone converter doesn't list that as a supported guest OS.  Unfortunately the software on the machine isn't available anymore so I'm trying to be as un-intrusive as possible so as not to cause any issues with the machine; just want to be able to have a working full backup of the machine in the event the hardware goes.

Mouse pointer jumping to the upper left corner (VMware Tools issue?)

I am not sure this is the right forum for my question.

After converting (P2V) some Windows servers I see the VM work for a short time (hours).

With no apparent reason I lose the control of the mouse, and the pointer jumps to the upper left corner of the screen.

I can move it around the screen but when I click the mouse the pointer jumps again to the upper left corner.

I can perform limited actions only using the old keyboard based functions.

I suspect the problem is related to VMware Tools, but reinstalling them does not solve the problem.
Have anybody faced similar problems?

Is there any document about thist strange behavior?

With converter 5.5, is there a way to do any type of offline P2V? like to create a bootable CD/DVD and boot the system with it to perform a P2V?

The P2V will be of different OS from Windows 2000 - Windows 2008R2

P2V Linux centOS 7 to Vmware Esxi 6.7.0 using converter 6.2 fails at 3%

$

Hi all!

First, I would like to clarify that I'm new on VMware platform and sorry if I ask a question that has an easy resolution, but reading all threads and solutions I could not solve my issue.

I'm trying to convert a Linux centOS 7 physical machine to a virtual machine in a VMware Server Esxi 6.7.0. To perform this task I'm using vCenter Converter Standalone 6.2.0. I set all wizard options, job starts but at 3% it fails with error:

FAILED: A general system error occurred: connect (`10.240.107.11'): Network is unreachable connect (`10.240.107.11'): Network is unreachable connect (`10.240.107.11'): Network is unreachable connect (`10.240.107.11'):
Network is unreachable Network error. Host 10.240.107.11 key can't be retrieved. (return code 2)

I have performed some tips given in another discussions, such as:

– SSH configuration is allowing root to access the system remotely from port 22

# grep Root /etc/ssh/sshd_config

PermitRootLogin yes

# the setting of "PermitRootLogin without-password".

– IPtables allow connection on port 22

# iptables -L | grep ssh

ACCEPT     tcp  --  anywhere             anywhere             tcp dpt:ssh ctstate NEW

– You are running Converter version 5.5.1 or greater (there is a known issue with older version that aren’t supporting DSA keys)

As I said before, I'm using vCenter Converter Standalone 6.2.0

– Add ALL:ALL parameter to “hosts.allow” parameter.

# cat /etc/hosts.allow

#

# hosts.allow   This file contains access rules which are used to

#               allow or deny connections to network services that

#               either use the tcp_wrappers library or that have been

#               started through a tcp_wrappers-enabled xinetd.

#

#               See 'man 5 hosts_options' and 'man 5 hosts_access'

#               for information on rule syntax.

#               See 'man tcpd' for information on tcp_wrappers

ALL:ALL

– Check DNS suffix

I'm doing the process using ip addresses... I'm not using names.

- Check network configuration

Linux, VMware server and machine with Converter have the same ip range and same netmask

- I'm running Converter as Administrator

p2v, redhat error can't find command ':'

Hello,

I'm trying to do a p2v with vmconverter 6.2.0 from a Redhat 7.4 server. All goes well but at startup between the bios and grud I have the message:

error: can't find command ':'

I press the spacebar several times to get to the grub menu. Then the start of the vm is happening normally.

I'm using vCenter server 5.5.0 build 2183111

Where can this error come from?

unable to update BCD converting windows 10 machine to vm

I am using the latest version of vmConverter standalone.  I am trying to convert my windows 10 machine to vm.

It is failing with warning: unable to update BCD on destination machines system volume.

I have disabled all services on my machine, that did not work

My Windows machine is running fine. Also, I noticed that the converter only allows for Version 11 of VMWare. I am now using VMWare workstation 12, could that be a problem?

Thanks

The source parameters are invalid using .tib file

About 18 months ago I converter two physical Windows servers to ESXi vms.  I used Acronis Backup and Recovery 10 and VMware Converter Standalone 4.0.1

The process was simple, use the Acronis bootable media to image the physical servers creating .tib files.  Then I used VMWare converter to convert the .tib files to vmware files.

I'm trying to complete the same task following the steps exactly as I did 18 months ago but now when I select the .tib file as the source image and hit next (or view source details) I get the "The source parameters are invalid"

I know there are work arounds (use the .tib image to create a new VM, etc) but I'm wondering why this process isn't working as it did before.

I have attached the 3 log files but this is the only error that I found...

[03360 error 'Default'] Found dangling SSL error: [0] error:00000001:lib(0):func(0):reason(1)

I tried this on VMware converter standalone 4.0 and 5.0.

Are .tib files no longer supported?
