Hello,

I've been banging my head trying to fix this issue with a Linux conversion. I've searched the net high and low, nothing seems to fix the problem. I've attached the Converter log files. The included lines below are the last few of the worker log. I've highlighted in red the possible problem areas, but none of the "fixes" seem to work. Any help is greatly appreciated!

P2v Converter Linux

Using Vm Converter 5.0 to do P2V a linux server. But getting a read only file system on VmLinux after conversion. I was wondering if someone knows a working procedure to convert physical Linux to vmware using converter 5. I looked but all I found using converter 4.0 + using Boot CD. For converter 5.0 do we still need boot CD or enabling SSH on linux....etc. If someone can help with a step by step procedure really appreciated.

Thanks

Unable to reconfigure Windows 2K8 R2 VM. BSOD 7b on boot

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Trying to convert physical server to virtual

Physical server is Windows Server 2008 R2 64 bit

Running ESXi 5.5 cluster

Using VMware Stand Alone Converter version 6.1.1 installed onto the physical machine itself.

During the convert machine process the program stops at 98% with message unable to reconfigure machine.

I checked the datastore and did find the vmdk was there.

I then tried to configure machine with only the 'reconfigure destination virtual machine' option selected and I get a failed message during the "Updating the boot sectors of the destination machine" process...

Error: An error occurred during the reconfiguration.

Status: FAILED: A general system error occurred: InternalError

Trying to boot the VM gives a 7B BSOD which is "INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE bug check frequently occurs because of a boot device failure."

I have read that this can occur because of LSI Logic SAS issues.

Here is what I have tried so far.

I manually and successfully built a 2K8 R2 VM using an install media ISO and booted into the OS so I know that my process and my cluster work correctly.

I used the newly created and working 2K8 R2 VM and restored a server backup image I took from the physical server.  I now get the 7B boot BSOD on this once working VM

I created another new 2K8 R2 VM and pointed it to the VMDK of the converted VM.  I get the 7B BSOD

After some reading and research online, I copied the following files from a good running 2K8 R2 VM into the non functioning converted VM's \Windows\System32\drivers location

LSI_SAS.sys

LSI_SAS2.sys

LSI_SCSI.sys

Into the system registry I imported the following reg keys which I first exported from the working 2K8 R2 VM

LSI_SAS.reg

LSI_SAS2.reg

LSI_SCSI.reg

I also verified that each of these Values had their REG_DWORD = 0

The last thing I tried was to take a ghost image of the physical machine, and then restore the ghost image to the hard drive of a newly created 2K8 R2 VM.  I was actually very surprised that I could do this in the first place.  But upon booting the ghosted VM I once again get the 7B BSOD.

So now I have come here as I am not sure what to try next.

Before I post all the logs is there something simple I am missing?  I've converted systems before without issue but never a 2K8 R2 server/

Thanks in advance

Hi all.

Can't convert some one very important server.

I have 2 disk :\ Any ideas?

Increasing the cloning performance

There have been many complaints about transfer rate degradation in Converter 5.0.

Converter uses NFC (a proprietary VMware protocol) for cloning to managed destination. Security has been enhanced in Converter 5.0 by encrypting the data transfer. Unfortunately this has caused a more severe performance degradation than expected.
Switching off SSL encryption is a way to work around this issue. Here is how it is done:

  1. Open the converter-worker.xml configuration file. It is located in "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\VMware\VMware vCenter Converter Standalone" folder for Windows Vista or newer or in "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\VMware\VMware vCenter Converter Standalone" for older Windows versions.
  2. Set the key Config/nfc/useSsl to false and save the configuration file.
  3. Restart "VMware vCenter Converter Standalone Worker" service.

I.e. it should look like:

    ...    <nfc>       <readTimeoutMs>120000</readTimeoutMs>       <useSsl>false</useSsl>    ...

"An error occurred during the conversion: 'Unknown exception'",

$

We're using Vcenter to P2V some of our servers. Most have worked, but the ones that fail, fail with a description that is not helpful at all.

mostRecentError = (converter.fault.CloneFault) {

--> dynamicType = <unset>,

--> faultCause = (vmodl.MethodFault) null,

--> description = "Unknown exception",

--> msg = "An error occurred during the conversion: 'Unknown exception'",

--> },

--> numConsecutiveErrors = 1,

We're tried several different ways of cloning including matching the hardware, not thin provisioning, setting permissions, using a domain admin account and still we get this error.

has anyone else had this error and figured out a solution?

Thanks.

Any reason for painfully slow transfer rates with VMWare Converter?

$

By now I have been through several P2V and one V2V conversion using the VMWare converter 5.0, 5.1 and now 5.5 and all have suffered from very slow transfer rates. On 5.0 and 5.1 I have disabled SSL Encryption and while doing a local P2V from the physical machine or a P2V from a remote machine (all on a Gigabit LAN network) I have seen slow transfer rates of maybe 5 MB/s.

And now doing a V2V using 5.5, I am moving a VM from internal storage onto a SAN, I am seeing average of 2MB/sec transfer rates. This is with SSL enabled. And I am converting a 1.6TB VMDK (windows 2008) that has only 480GB used. For this particular V2V, I had to resize the volume and make it a thin from thick, so I realize a slower file level copy is taking place instead of a block level or volume level. But are these transfer rates "normal"?

Thanks for any and all feedback in advance.

VMWare P2V 6.2 Error Partition number must be set for the boot volume

$

I am new to VMWare.  My question is very similar to Converter 6 -  Partition number must be set for the boot volume but I do have a boot partition.

I used VMWare vCenter Converter 6.20 and ESXi 6.7.0 to remotely convert a CentOS 6.6 (Actually "Schmooze 6.6" -- FreePBX 13 from Sangoma) machine.

There was an error in conversion at 97% -- this is from the log:

2019-01-25T17:29:36.183-05:00 info vmware-converter-server[17492] [Originator@6876 sub=Default] [task,379] [task-6] -- ERROR -- Convert: converter.fault.CloneFault

--> (converter.fault.CloneFault) {

-->    faultCause = (vmodl.MethodFault) null,

-->    description = "Partition number must be set for the boot volume",

-->    msg = ""

--> }

The VM was created so I booted from a CentOS 6.6 install ISO and used the recovery shell.  This is an LVM system. It appears that the boot partition is not being mounted.

This screenshot is from fdisk -l in the recovery shell, and shows /dev/sda1 as the boot device. https://www.screencast.com/t/ZE6MOJg7Zejp   (Sorry for the screenshot but I can't cut & paste from the VMWare Remote Console.) After #chroot /mnt/sysimage # ls /boot says "0 files".

When I look in BIOS setup on the VM, there are no hard drives listed in boot order -> hard drives.

/sbin/grub-install /dev/sda1 produces "/dev/sda1 does not have any corresponding BIOS drive"

/sbin/grub-install /dev/sda  produces "/dev/sda does not have any corresponding BIOS drive"

/etc/fstab fro the original machine says:

It seems some partitions were missed n the conversion?

I can SCP the /boot files from original machine to VM, but I can't seem to mount /dev/sda1 to copy the to copy the files to.

SO, I am now stuck.  Any advice is GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Migrating VM from ESX 2.5 to ESX 3.01

HI,

If I need to migrate VMs from a ESX 2.5 server to ESX 3.01 by using Converter, what do I need to do?

1) Do I need to add my ESX 2.5 server to the 2.0 Virtual Center which is managing the ESX 3.01 server

2) Do i need to present all the vmdk files used by the 2.5x VM to the ESX 3.01 server??

Please advise

vmware converter without infrastructure server?

$

I am a new to VMware and am trying to create a virtual image of an old Ubuntu 7.10 laptop using VMware converter standalone 4.0.1 for the purpose of occasionally running the image in VMware player.

I click "convert machine" tooltip, select source as "powered on machine" and have gone through all the steps to enable ssh, edit sudoers, and sudo VMware config on my machine and that gets me through the first step of the wizard.  Note that the "this local machine" radio button is grayed and I need to enter the local ip address of my laptop.

What I'm stuck on is the second step, "Specify Destination". This topic is discussed in an earlier thread, but I don't understand the answer. VMware converter asks me for the VMware Infrastructure server details, but the Server drop down list box is empty with no choices.  I don't see why I need a server since I just want to generate a single file, but the software doesn't allow me to leave this blank. I tried running the stand along converter on a windows machine on the same network (pointing to the linux laptop to convert) and I get the same behavior with this drop box being empty.

Do I need to also download VMware ESXi or Server to generate a virtual image of my laptop using VMware converter standalone? I read the documentation for those products briefly and they seem to be unrelated to the simple task that I'm trying to do which is to hot-clone a linux laptop. If I get one of these other programs, do they  then need to run on another machine on the local network? I tried installing the VMware server on another computer on my local network, but it told me I had to first uninstall the player, so I didn't go any further.

Maybe this is related to something else then - like having to enable the standalone converter server in linux? - (the about box says the standalone converter is both a client and a server)

Please help!

Hello friends, how are you?

I'm trying to convert a physical machine with Redhat 3 have the latest version of VMware vCenter Converter (5.5.3)

On the machine with Redhat I have the firewall disabled, the IP as the name resolves well and are within the same network as the host.

At one point, after partition and format the disk on the target server, I get the following error in the log:

FAILED: On a general system error occurred:

Network error. Host 192.168.0.142 key can not be retrieved. (return code 2)

Can someone help me?

Thanks a lot!

convert HV VM (P2V) as physical or from Hyper-V server (V2V)

Hi.

I have to convert one Hyper-V's VM to vSphere, it is a windows server 2008 r2 (both HV and VM) and HV have simple default installation.

First step: with source as  Hyper-V I had got a problem at 1% such "FAILED: An error occured while opening a virtual disk. Verify that the Converter server and the running source machines have a network access to the source and destination ESX/ESXi hosts.". I think it is not commonly problem at HV, because neighboured test VM converted ok, but it is very pure in environment - have no software as MSSQL and big vhd. And I think if I make google-search more then I can resolve problem (or write additionaly here:). Commonly, one thought was that raid-5 was degraded at that moment, and maybe in fast reading via HV it was timeouts, dont know. (I brought disk to raid 5 just yesterday and try again HV convert tonight.)

Second step: with source as physical (yep, why not) it converted ok, despite that I forgot or can't turn off programs/processes to give VM easy way for convert.

And now I have a question:

     Is I should to try convert from HV directly or it enough to do as physical?

     Is a principal difference in resulted VM (more clear virtualization layer or windows in VM) when I do one or enother thing?

Finaly I didnt understand a principal need of HV conversion as it. Except several situations: when we can't run source VM for physical conversion (f.e. havnt free CPU/RAM/etc or it is like archive and not for run to prevent state change); when we need fast conversion (without virtual layer from source VM to HV); and when we want to exclude VM's process works effect.

No matter what i do this seems to happen around %78. I've had it as high as %86 but that hasn't happened again. I'm trying this on an XP partition. The only thing i could maybe think is causing this is the fact i'm not using a 1:1 image of the size.. i'm shrinking the image down to only the size needed intending to allow it to grow.

I've attached the logs check them out see if you can help!

At a loss at this point. Brand new reformatted FAT32 external USB harddrive on an XPpro Laptop. I can succesfully R/W to this drive, create folders, etc so seems fine.

Download and run 4.0 Converter and persistantly receive the following after about 3 minutes:

Status: FAILED: Unable to create a VSS snapshot of the source volume(s). Error code:

2147754776 (0x80042318).

Simply trying to create a VM for this physical powered on machine to the USB drive which is empty

Trying to create a VM of this machine before returning it. Lots of work ahead if I can simply create this VM and run it on the new host.

Any help would be appreciated. Read the manuals and notes. Couldn't find this error code mentioned. Email to VMware - they sent me here.

Thanks

Converter Failed: Unable to create

Hi All,

Firstly, I am a newbie to VMware so apologies if I appear ignorant on the topic.

I am trying to create a VM of my local machine using VMWare vCenter Converter Standalone v5.0.0

Unfortunately I keep getting to 98% complete and it fails with the following status:

FAILED: Unable to create '\\.\vstor2-mntapi10-shared-31F59A9D00001000000000000F000000\$Reconfig$'

I have no idea what this message means. According to the log highlights it was "processing the reconfiguration datastore" at the time. I have exported the log file as per attached.

Can anyboby point me in the right direction?

Many thanks,

Paul.

Any idea how I can resolve this issue and get the agent running? Or at least a hint for further investigation?

Thanks!

Using converter standalone 5.1 converting RHEL 5 to use with VMware workstation. I get the below error.

Newly converted Windows 7 VM boots to BSOD

I just converted a Windows 7 x32 bit physical PC to a VM using the standalone converter (version 5.5) and I have imported it into my inventory in ESXI 5.5 server but when I go to boot it, I get the following BSOD error (see attached) 0x0000007B.

To troubleshoot, I have booted from the Windows 7 x32bit ISO and ran a /fixboot /fixmbr but that has not resolved the issue. Choosing startup repair results the the second screenshot (screen2.jpg).

Anything else I can do to get the VM to boot? Otherwise I have to build one from scratch
