Conversion fails due to SSL certificate issues - can I work around this?

$

I'm starting the process of migrating a collection of VMs in a KVM environment to an existing vSphere cluster and am trying to use Converter (5.5) to do a live conversion/migration of an Ubuntu box, but it's failing due to create the virtual disk on one of hosts due to the SSL certificate, and I haven't found any other posts or articles specifically about this (seems like most SSL related items are about improving speed)

From the worker log, I can see that:

  • Converter is able to successfully create the target VM
  • The attempt to create the virtual disk fails due to the SSL certificate not being valid (All systems in the cluster appear to be using VMware default certs).  From the worker log file:

2014-08-07T09:35:13.947-07:00 [06620 warning 'Default'] [,0] SSL_IsVerifyEnabled: failed to read registry value. Falling back to default behavior: verification on. LastError = 0

2014-08-07T09:35:13.947-07:00 [06620 warning 'Default'] [,0] SSL: Unknown SSL Error

2014-08-07T09:35:13.947-07:00 [06620 warning 'Default'] [,0] SSL: connect failed

2014-08-07T09:35:13.947-07:00 [06620 warning 'Default'] [,0] [NFC ERROR] NfcNewAuthdConnectionEx: Failed to connect to peer. Error: The remote host certificate has these problems:

-->

--> * The host certificate chain is incomplete.

-->

--> * unable to get local issuer certificate

2014-08-07T09:35:13.947-07:00 [06620 info 'Default'] Sysimgbase_DiskLib_OpenWithPassPhrase failed with 'NBD_ERR_NETWORK_CONNECT' (error code:2338)

  • The target VM is deleted.

Is it possible to simply disable the certificate validation for this process?  From the log, it sounds like there's a registry key that would control it, but I haven't found any information on it (or guessed it correctly).  Or can I import that cert to the local Windows system running Converter to get around it (I haven't been successful with that approach yet either)

It's actually not clear to me which system is doing the validation.  While the worker log states it connecting to the vSphere host, there is no such line indicating it's connecting to the host where the target VM is located, and it looks like that's the host with the certificate that is deemed invalid.   Is the validation not happening on my local system that is running Converter? (the vCenter server settings shows that the "vCenter requires verified host SSL certificates" checkbox is unchecked already)

Thanks,

Scott

What's the best way to remove the team after the conversion?  You can't open the Broadcom utility because no adapters exist.  If you try to remove the BASP Virtual Adapter from the device manager it says "failed to uninstall the device.  The device may be required to boot up the computer"

Well, hi people...

Im going to use vmware converter standard to migrate 3 physical machines to an ESX 3.02. Obviously one by one, and hot local migration. Ive just read all the documentation, but i gonna know the real experience, o recomendations about this...its gonna be oracle, exchange and a filesystem machine....

VMWare support for Backup Exec System Recovery version 7

I was wondering when VMWare Converter will support BESR 7, which hit the shelves now.

I know that BESR 6.5 is supported, buy I really want to update BESR 6.5 to version 7 but I will loose compatibility with VMWare Converter because of the renewed .sv2i format.

Is there a way to hot clone a Linux box (Suse 9)?

I tried with VMware Converter (3.0.2.599994). I get error message: "Unable to connect... The remote host is not accessible using Microsoft Network Services"

Is there any "Linux Agent" to install?

Thanks in advance

"Unable to Obtain Hardware information for the selected machine"

Summary:

I am trying to migrate two VMware virtual machines from Linux VMware server 2.01 to a VMware infrastructure install running VMWare ESXi 5.1.0.   When I try and use the Standalone converter to convert the VMware virtual machine to 5.1 I get the error "Unable to Obtain Hardware information for the selected machine".   I have followed the various suggestions on how to deal with this issue and am still Unable to import the machines.

More info:

I have a Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition (32-bit) server and a  Microsoft Windows Server 2008 (32-bit) server VMWARE virtual Machine image I am trying to migrate.

To do this I shut the machines down and copied the entire machine folder from the Linux server to a Windows 2008 R2 enterprise machine.

I have then run the VMWARE standalone converter (by right clicking on it and running as administrator)

I have gone into "convert machine" and selected "VMware Workstation or other VMware virtual machine"

I have gone and selected the vmx file from the machine I wish to import

Upon selecting "View Source Details" and or "next"  I get that error: "Unable to Obtain Hardware information for the selected machine"

I COULD run the Stand Alone importer on the machines however I would rather use the offline images.  The import process changes all the hardware and the change in hardware means reapplying the windows license keys.  Which means "what else is going on in the important software we use if windows is now thinking the hardware has changed THAT much?"

Hi all,

I have tried to convert a power on physical machine to a workstation vm and it always failed at 3%-5%. The converter showed the same error message "BlockLevelVolumeCloneMgr::CloneVolume: Detected a write error during the cloning of volume Disk#0_Partition#1." every time. I have made a disk check using HD Tune which showed no bad blocks.

     Source OS: windows server 2008

     Converter version: 6.0.0 build-2716716

     ESXi: 6.0

Do I need to try a file level clone?  Would be grateful if anyone can give me some advice.

Activation issue when P2V an OEM Windows 2003 Server

I am facing a challenge of P2V an OEM Windows 2003 Server. The conversion works fine but the server refuses to activate.

When i start the OS, i have the message that activation is required, but when i try to activate by internet, activation failed.

I read that the OEM licence is not authorized on a VM.

Is there a solution to this?

VMWare Converter Issue: vmware converter destination resource pool not found

Hi there

This issue seems to have cropped up a couple of times but I could not find a solution, so apologies if I am covering old ground.

Background:

VMware installation in progress. Cluster with 2 x ESX 3.5 (R3) servers (Dell Power Edge 1950) with Virtual Center (2.5 running as VM). At present there is no SCSI attached storage so all VMs are currently on local disc (See "work in progress").

Trying to virtualise physical machine (Win2K3 Terminal Server). We chose manual conversion, and shrank disks to minimum allowed size. When trying to select a storage device (local disk on ESX 1) we get the above error. The logs say "The host name used for the connection does not match the subject name on the host certificate". I will attach conversion logs to this post. Any help or pointers appreciated.

Prompting for Windows Product Key

While generating a procedure for my department to convert physical Windows 2003 servers to VMs, I ran into an issue.  vConverter v6.0 converts the machine; however, I am prompted to enter a Product Key. The other conversions I did not prompt me for this.  Any idea why this happened?  Also, do you know how I can prevent this from happening?

Please note: I double checked the sysprep file on the vConverter server.  It is expanded and in the same location it was for the other conversions.

Conversion of old VMs to ESXi - Taking too much space

Hi there!

Is it normal that conversion (using vCenter Converter standalone) takes too much of my storage? As you can see below is a VM size comparison before and after conversion:

This is on VMware Server 2.0 (Old Server)

55 GB  server001.test06

73 GB  server002.test07

and this is after I converted to ESXi (New Server)

242 GB    server001.test06

142 GB    server002.test07

See the BIG difference?

*Is there a way to convert

these VMs without exhausting too much of my server disc space. I only have 300G left and I will putting up several more in the future!*

Thanks

Jessie

Import from s2vi backup unsucessfull...

I've had no luck in importing a Backup Exec System Recovery backup - sv2i file...

Are there any limits on disk type, etc? This machine is a Win2K3R1Ent server with SATA drives and the image is the same type of machine with an ATA drive...
