FAILED: Unable to create a VSS snapshot of the source volume(s). Error code: 2147754766 (0x8004230E).

Hi All,

I got error when trying converting physical server to VM. Here is the summary of my site:

Physical server OS               : Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1

vCenter converter version     : 6.2.0 build-7348398

vCenter Dest version             : Windows vCenter 6.5

Just few minutes after submitting jobs, I got this error:

FAILED: Unable to create a VSS snapshot of the source volume(s). Error code: 2147754766 (0x8004230E).

After searching, I know this error is related to Volume Shadow Copy Service that can not convert FAT32.

Yes, There is FAT32 system in physical server as below:

FAT32.PNG

VMware KB ( VMware Knowledge Base  ) says to uncheck FAT volume or convert to NTFS.

option 1:

When try to uncheck this FAT32 volume, the conversion progress will fail at 96 or 98 %, with error Warning: Unable to update BCD on the destination machine's system volume.

We know this FAT32 volume is system volume, we try to overcome this issue but still no luck till now, after some days troubleshooting.

Question: Does anyone know to overcome this issue?

Option 2:

Convert FAT32 volume to NTFS. Honestly we still do not try this option yet since the physical server is in prod and still running. We worry if this action can cause error to current server.

Question: does anyone know the safe way to convert FAT32 to NTFS?

Overall, anybody knows to solve issue in my site? Here I also attach the logs to analyze.

Best Regards,

Azlan  Syah

We have an ESXI 6.0 Cluster with 3 Dell Poweredge servers, which is connected to EMC Vnxe-3200 storage via 1-Gig speed.

From storage 2 NFS datastores are provisoned to Esxi Cluster, ontop of datastores we have created VM's.

Now we have procured new Unity Storage and migrating all workloads from Vnxe.

We have moved all the VM's to Unity using Storage Vmotion.

only one VM is pending which is of size 17-TB, a VM with 3-TB size has alomost taken 31hrs to completed SVmotion.

could you please suggest the options to migrate the 17-TB VM, can we use the Vcenter converter here.

This 17-TB VM doesnt have any backup, we are using this VM for archival of files, this VM is running with Windows server OS 2012.

BOOTMGR Missing

After converting Server 2008 I receive "BOOTMGR missing press any key to restart" When attempting to start the VM. I have attempted numerous disk configurations during the conversion process, always with the same result. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. This is from a thread started under the beta process. Which can be viewed here http://communities.vmware.com/thread/192700?start=0&tstart=0 . I believe this has been duplicated at vmware and may be fixed in the next release. I was wondering if there was a workaround?

Thanks in advance.

Newly converted Windows 7 VM boots to BSOD

I just converted a Windows 7 x32 bit physical PC to a VM using the standalone converter (version 5.5) and I have imported it into my inventory in ESXI 5.5 server but when I go to boot it, I get the following BSOD error (see attached) 0x0000007B.

To troubleshoot, I have booted from the Windows 7 x32bit ISO and ran a /fixboot /fixmbr but that has not resolved the issue. Choosing startup repair results the the second screenshot (screen2.jpg).

Anything else I can do to get the VM to boot? Otherwise I have to build one from scratch

Failing conversion at 98%

Hi all,

A bit of a noobie, so I'll try give as much information as possible.

I'm trying to convert a powered-off Workstation VM to our ESXi host.

One was successful, but the other keeps failing at 98%.

VMware vCenter Converster Standalone client version: 6.1.1

ESXi host: 5.1.0

vCenter Server: 5.1.0

The reason is as follows: Unable to clone disk E:\PRDWFO95F\PRDWFO95F-cl1.vmdk on the virtual machine 'PRDWFO95F'.

It takes about 1 hour 15 minutes to get there, so it's not an instant failure.

I've attached the logs, hoping this will help someone give me an answer.

Please let me know if I can provide any more information!

V2V for DC - Windows 2008 R2

Hello, I am planning to V2V (as part of the datacentre migration) a Windows 2008 R2 domain controller (DC) to new datacentre. As it’s not best practice to convert/ clone domain controller, I am stopping all AD related services and doing the V2V conversion.  When V2V finishes, I power on target VM, connect the network and start the services. We have other live domain controllers in the network.

As I am stopping the AD services, I am assuming that server is down from AD point of view. Is it right assumption?

Do you see any issues? Appreciate your thoughts on this.

I can’t use cold clone. OVF method or parallel DC build and migrate roles for some other reasons. I have no access to source vCenter server.

Cheers!!

A general system error occurred: InternalError (An error occurred during reconfiguration) on Win SBS 2008

Hi

I have attempted to convert a Windows SBS 2008 SP2 machine, but it failed around 96% with the following error. Logs attached (ConverterDiagnostics_Convert.zip)

2016-08-24_0804[1].png

Here is a summary of that conversion task.

2016-08-24_0813[1].png

I then read some suggestions online to try and just re-do the reconfiguration process again, and that failed as well with a similar error. Logs attached (ConverterDiagnostics_Configure.zip)

The destination location for the VM image is a 2TB USB HDD and the server is only 1.4TB in size.

Can anyone assist with trying to narrow down the issue for me. I tried to check the logs, but there are many errors around the time of the failure, so not sure what is the root cause.

Thanks

P2V converter

Hi all,

I'm trying to convert Linux physical machine (Ubuntu 16.04) to VM. I'm using VMware vCenter Converter Standalone 6.2.

Everything starts ok, converter starts to partitioning the destination disks, but after 1 min it says:

Error: Unable to partition the destination disks.

Status: FAILED: An error occurred during the conversion: ' /dev/root: already exists in filesystem New volume group name "root" is invalid Run `vgcreate --help' for more information. (return code 3)'.

Is the problem with the IP Helper server, that starts on the host, and maybe it has the same volume group?

Last night we rebuilt our lab environment and installed ESX 4.1.   We also downloaded VMware-Converter-All-4.3.0.   We built a couple of VM's and wanted to create some OVA files as backup.  However, it seems this version of Converter does not allow convering a VM to  OVA file.  Am I missing something??

Thanks!

Converted Centos VM error

$

Hi,

I have used the standalone conversion tool on Windows to move a Centos 7 VM from one ESXi 6.5 host to a new 6.7 host. I used linux host to new VM so that I could shrink the hard drive from a 1Tb provisioning to a 150Gb SSD provisioning (only uses 6Gb anyway so far) and it all went OKish.

When I power on I get an initial stream of errors that wait for input. Once I hit space it goes to the manual boot screen then allows me to boot up. Google is not proving very helpful for that error. I wonder if anyone has seen this before and can assist in fixing this.

I also get a blank screen when trying to reboot too. but one error at a time eh.

Many thanks in advance

Simon

Mac OS X support for vCenter Converter

This would save my life right now. I was wondering if anyone had the knowledge of how to p2v a Mac server (10.8) to another Mac running ESXi 5.1. If anyone could help with that, I will gladly befriend you!

How can I uninstall the vCenter Standalone Converter?

$

My vCenter Standalone Converter 5.5 installation is corrupted on a Windows Server 2012 R2 server.  Using the typical uninstall procedure through the Control Panel results in a "Could not stop service" message.  This is the message I receive regardless of whether I try to uninstall, repair, or reinstall the application.  Can someone direct me to a list of the various files and registry entries that need to be deleted to effectively remove the application to the point where I can reinstall it again?  Thanks.

Blue screen after conversion with VM converter stand alone 6.2

Using VM converter stand alone 6.2.
Converted Windows guest blue screens on startup:

Inaccessible Boot Disk

Most suggested solutions do not fix the blue screen: VMware Knowledge Base

  • Windows repair fails
  • Regedit fails
  • Change of Virtual Disk fails

Suggestions here also do not fix the blue screen: https://communities.vmware.com/thread/335073

This change did for me:

New Guest VM > EDIT Settings > SCSI Controller 0 > LSI Logic SAS

That was the type of SCSI controller of the source machine but VM converter 6.2 did not replicate that setting to the cloned VM, even using the Reconfigure VM option afterwards.

RHEL 4 machine converted fine, but get kernel panic when I start the VM

So I have a bunch of old Red Hat 4 servers that I need to convert to VMs.   I am using the standalone converter 5.0 and the VMs range from Red Hat version 2.6.9.-11 to 2.6.9-42.   Some of the machines I can P2V with out any issues but a majority of them fail with

mount: error 6 mounting ext3
mount: error 2 mounting none
switchroot: mount failed: 22
umount /initrd/dev failed: 2 (see pic for more details)

error.jpg

So I get a 100% complete when I use the Converter but when I boot up the VM I get that error.   I have followed the directions from http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1002402 but I still not having any luck.   I made changes to /etc/fstab, /boot/grub/grub.conf, /boot/grub/device.map etc...   I am also having issues with rebuilding the ramdisk.   I ran the command with the existing version on the drive but I get an error about about no modules found.   I have also found another article saying the version of TAR might be an issue so i've upgrade the version to 1.14-15 and re-ran converter and it still failing.   Anyone have any ideas what is wrong?    I am windows admin with some linux background so please go detailed on the linux commands.

Converter unable to connect to remote machine

Background info:

Local machine is running Vista Business

Remote machine is a Win2003 server that we've been hosting some stuff on,  We want to build a VM off of this so we can host it on our existing VMWare setup, and close the account with the third party who's currently hosting that machine.

Anyway, when I attempt to run the converter, I get the following message after entering the server info:

"Unable to connect to the remote VMWare Converter Agent.  the remote host is not accessible using Microsoft Network Services.  it might be down or firewalled."

I've found the recommendation about disabling Simple File Sharing- this does not appear to apply to 2003, as the option mentioned in a tutorial to disable it does not exist on this machine.   I note that the Authentication dialog says to enter a DOMAIN\user name... do I need to maybe enter something besides the admin user name I use to RDP into the machine?

Web services on the machine work fine, and I can remote in with no trouble.  Anything I need to be looking at here?

Thanks!

How do I create a VM from a partition copy?

$

I had a major accident with a laptop and had to turn it in to get store credit to buy another laptop this morning. The tech copied the c:\partition to a partition on an external drive for me. Now I am wondering if that copy is enough to create a virtual machine.

I tried using Acronis True Image to make a TIB file of the partition that he gave to me and then using both Converter 4.0.1 (that I downloaded today) and VMware Workstation 6.5 to create virtual machines from the TIB file that I created from the partition copy that I was given.

Neither will boot. They say no operating system found even though all of the files from the C:\partition seem to be there.

Am I missing some MBR or boot.ini or other settings or files since this is a copy of the C:\ partition and not and actual image of the entire hard drive? If so, how do I rebuild them to make this work

Thanks!
