Ubuntu P2V: kernel panic not syncing vfs unable to mount root fs on unknown-block 0,0

I have a 16.04LTS running on an intel NUC that seems happy there. I'm trying to P2V to my ESXi6.5u1 machine. The machine is up to date with apt-get update etc. Conversion seems to go fine though I did make the memory and disk sizes a little smaller, but still way bigger than it needs. Booting that VM gets me kernel panic not syncing vfs unable to mount root fs on unknown-block 0,0.

Tried to boot advanced options and it shows one for upstart and another for recovery mode. They all boot to the same error. Following some guides online I hit C to go to command line and for example "df -h" results in error: can't find command 'df'. Every command I'm finding online to troubleshoot this is not found.

What should I do?

Other things I have tried:

Deleted the VM and converted it again, only this time selecting SATA disks instead of the suggested SCSI, which would match the source machine. Same exact problem.

Third time through I found a warning message about resizing boot, set that to the same size but still got same error.

Converted Centos VM error

Hi,

I have used the standalone conversion tool on Windows to move a Centos 7 VM from one ESXi 6.5 host to a new 6.7 host. I used linux host to new VM so that I could shrink the hard drive from a 1Tb provisioning to a 150Gb SSD provisioning (only uses 6Gb anyway so far) and it all went OKish.

When I power on I get an initial stream of errors that wait for input. Once I hit space it goes to the manual boot screen then allows me to boot up. Google is not proving very helpful for that error. I wonder if anyone has seen this before and can assist in fixing this.

I also get a blank screen when trying to reboot too. but one error at a time eh.

Many thanks in advance

Simon

How Do I Install VMware-Converter in Ubuntu 18.04-LTS

Hello.  I am trying to install VMware Converter in Ubuntu 18.04-LTS.  I have no idea how to do this.  Install documentation for the operating system or just linux in general is virtually non-existent.  I read the current documentation and looks like I can only install this latest version in Windows, however there is an open source download available.  Can someone please help?  I downloaded the latest file.  The name of the file is VMware-converter-6.2.0-7348398.odp, of which I extracted all the way to VMware-converter-6.2.0-7348398.odp.tar, a tar file.  In general, I just want VMware Converter installed on my linux operating system.  Any help or guides\documentation would be appreciated.

After centos6 is converted from xenserver7.6 to vmware, the cursor blinks in the upper left corner of the black screen

1、After centos6 is converted from xenserver7.6 to vmware, the cursor blinks in the upper left corner of the black screen. This problem needs to enter rescue mode and then modify the root=/dev/xxxx part of the grub file according to the comments, and then it can start normally.

2、I am not sure whether this solution is universal, I found it by observing the grub file of a virtual machine that started normally.

How to covert V to V

Hi All,

I want to perform a virtual to virtual machine conversion task.

I have a virtual machine which is up and running in one data center, i require the

same virtual machine in the other data center.

As i can not migrate or Clone a vm from one DC to other.

I will have to go for virtual to virtual machine conversion.

Please give me the steps to be followed to perform v to v conversion.

I hope in V to V conversion the configuration files will be copied from one datacenter

to other data center over the network...Is this understanding correct?

Also how about the data of the VM,Will i be able to get the same data on the

VM as it was on parent datacenter after v to v.

What will be approximate time to convert if VM Holds data of 80GB.

Please let me know the steps..Thanks in advance.

Converter 6 - Partition number must be set for the boot volume

Using Converter Standalone 6 client and attempting to convert a CentOS 6.5 physical box, the process goes to 97% and then gives this error: "Partition number must be set for the boot volume".  The result was a virtual machine with disks that appeared to be of correct size, but would not boot.  The target destination was vCenter 5.5 U2.  In the converter worker log, I see a number of interesting items regarding disks, but am not sure what they might mean.  What can I look for to troubleshoot this specific issue?  Thanks.

Hello! I am attempting to use vmware converter, but am receive the below error after it gets to around 75%. I've tried deselecting the 2nd Partition, but that didn't work. Let me know if there is more information that would assist in troubleshooting. Thank you!

Hi All,

I got error when trying converting physical server to VM. Here is the summary of my site:

Physical server OS               : Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1

vCenter converter version     : 6.2.0 build-7348398

vCenter Dest version             : Windows vCenter 6.5

Just few minutes after submitting jobs, I got this error:

FAILED: Unable to create a VSS snapshot of the source volume(s). Error code: 2147754766 (0x8004230E).

After searching, I know this error is related to Volume Shadow Copy Service that can not convert FAT32.

Yes, There is FAT32 system in physical server as below:

FAT32.PNG

VMware KB ( VMware Knowledge Base  ) says to uncheck FAT volume or convert to NTFS.

option 1:

When try to uncheck this FAT32 volume, the conversion progress will fail at 96 or 98 %, with error Warning: Unable to update BCD on the destination machine's system volume.

We know this FAT32 volume is system volume, we try to overcome this issue but still no luck till now, after some days troubleshooting.

Question: Does anyone know to overcome this issue?

Option 2:

Convert FAT32 volume to NTFS. Honestly we still do not try this option yet since the physical server is in prod and still running. We worry if this action can cause error to current server.

Question: does anyone know the safe way to convert FAT32 to NTFS?

Overall, anybody knows to solve issue in my site? Here I also attach the logs to analyze.

Azlan  Syah

P2V Windows Server with multiple logical disks - creates 1 vmdk

$

Hi - when using VMware Converter what is the reason for creating 1 vmdk file when doing a P2V of a server that has 2 disks? Why doesn't it create two vmdk files?

Do most people just run the converter several times selecting 1 disk at a time??

When I select the C: and D: volumes of the server and resize them - instead of creating 2x15GB vmdk's it creates a 30GB vmdk.

What's best??

Standalone Converter and Server 2008 error

$

I've just installed the stand alone converter V4 (build-146302). It's running thru the wizard to the point where it tries to connect to the destination ESX server and 'verifying destination parameters'. At this point, it comes up with a 'Fatal Error Occured' message, and the conversion aborts. The dialog says that the most common reason is 'loss of network connection' but the network seems to be fine.

I've installed the converter on my desktop XP box, and also on a fresh newly imaged PC (both physical boxes with 4GB RAM), and I get the same error in both cases. The server I am trying to convert is a Windows 2008 server, 32 bit.

Does anyone have any suggestions what's wrong? I've attached the log file below.

Thanks.

VMWare Converter Standalone v4.3.0 - Error 29163

$

I've recently moved over to VMWare Player and used VMWare Converter Standalone v4.3.0 to convert my old VMs. Once all the VMs were converted I uninstalled VMWare Converter Standalone from the host..

I now find I need to convert one additional VM, but when I attempt to reinstall VMWare Converter Standalone I get the following error:

Error 29163. Could not copy file C:\DOCUME~1\<User>\LOCALS~1\Temp\converter-agent.xml

Where <User> represents my userid.

Things I've checked include:

  • I'm an admin on the host
  • I've rebooted the host (Windows XP SP3)
  • There's plenty of disk space
  • I've cleared out the folder including hiden files
  • Searched VMWare forums and the internet for anything similar

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Mark

Conversion fails due to SSL certificate issues - can I work around this?

$

I'm starting the process of migrating a collection of VMs in a KVM environment to an existing vSphere cluster and am trying to use Converter (5.5) to do a live conversion/migration of an Ubuntu box, but it's failing due to create the virtual disk on one of hosts due to the SSL certificate, and I haven't found any other posts or articles specifically about this (seems like most SSL related items are about improving speed)

From the worker log, I can see that:

  • Converter is able to successfully create the target VM
  • The attempt to create the virtual disk fails due to the SSL certificate not being valid (All systems in the cluster appear to be using VMware default certs).  From the worker log file:

2014-08-07T09:35:13.947-07:00 [06620 warning 'Default'] [,0] SSL_IsVerifyEnabled: failed to read registry value. Falling back to default behavior: verification on. LastError = 0

2014-08-07T09:35:13.947-07:00 [06620 warning 'Default'] [,0] SSL: connect failed

2014-08-07T09:35:13.947-07:00 [06620 warning 'Default'] [,0] [NFC ERROR] NfcNewAuthdConnectionEx: Failed to connect to peer. Error: The remote host certificate has these problems:

--> * The host certificate chain is incomplete.

-->

2014-08-07T09:35:13.947-07:00 [06620 info 'Default'] Sysimgbase_DiskLib_OpenWithPassPhrase failed with 'NBD_ERR_NETWORK_CONNECT' (error code:2338)

  • The target VM is deleted.

Is it possible to simply disable the certificate validation for this process?  From the log, it sounds like there's a registry key that would control it, but I haven't found any information on it (or guessed it correctly).  Or can I import that cert to the local Windows system running Converter to get around it (I haven't been successful with that approach yet either)

It's actually not clear to me which system is doing the validation.  While the worker log states it connecting to the vSphere host, there is no such line indicating it's connecting to the host where the target VM is located, and it looks like that's the host with the certificate that is deemed invalid.   Is the validation not happening on my local system that is running Converter? (the vCenter server settings shows that the "vCenter requires verified host SSL certificates" checkbox is unchecked already)

Thanks,

Scott

Invalid Configuration for device '0'

Hi all

Trying to upload a VM to ESXi 6.0 using VMware vCenter Converter Standalone version 6.2.0 but the task will not start giving the message "Invalid configuration for device '0'."

I don't know what this pertains to.  The source VM came from Workstation 15 and I thought it may have to do with compatibility level.  I tried changing the source VM level to 12 and to 11 but the same message appear.  Anyone know what the solution might be?

Thanks

Is there any way to P2V a 2008 R2 Domain Controller without demoting it?

We have a tough scenario:  Need to P2V a 2008 R2 Domain Controller (Only Windows Server in the Network) back to the same hardware.  I tried using the cold clone CD to convert it to a interm ESXi Server, but then found out it doesn't support 2008 R2.
