P2V Windows Server with multiple logical disks - creates 1 vmdk

Hi - when using VMware Converter what is the reason for creating 1 vmdk file when doing a P2V of a server that has 2 disks? Why doesn't it create two vmdk files?

Do most people just run the converter several times selecting 1 disk at a time??

When I select the C: and D: volumes of the server and resize them - instead of creating 2x15GB vmdk's it creates a 30GB vmdk.

What's best??

I am trying to convert a Windows 2008 R2 Server to a n  ESX 4.0 server.

I have also tried converting it to my ESXi  test server.

Using Vmware converter 4.01 build - 161434

Converting Windows 2000 and resolving Inaccessible Boot Device

This should be considered also request for adding features.

I had an old PC with AMD CPU, VIA KT333 chipset and with Windows 2000 Professional dual/triple booting Windows 98 and kubuntu. I tried to convert Windows 2000:

1. Installed VMware vCenter Converter Standalone 4.0.1 on my new PC with kubuntu. It detected that my old PC with Windows 2000 started has no agent installed by trying to connect to TCP port 9089 and then asked to deploy agent. After waiting about 1-2 minutes deployment failed. I checked with Wireshark - no one IP packet was sent to the remote PC. Bug #1: Linux version of VMware vCenter Converter Standalone 4.0.1 doesn't try to install agent on the remote machine.

2. Downloaded VMware vCenter Converter Standalone 4.0.1 for Windows and manually installed agent. After starting the service, agent listened only on 127.0.0.1 (localhost). I had to manually edit a Other fix #1: D:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\VMware\VMware vCenter Converter Standalone\converter-agent.xml file and to change Config/plugins/ufa_agent/enableRemoteAccess to true.

3. I connected to the agent but conversion failed after 2 hours at reconfiguration stage. There was a warning that I have no sysprep tools. I downloaded them and copied them where needed but after 2 hours the conversion failed again.

4. I installed VMware vCenter Converter Standalone 4.0.1 server and client on the old PC and converted local machine. Conversion again failed. Then I found that I have to look for agent logs about the reason - Other fix # 2: had to increase manually the maximum registry size with 20 MB.

5. After another 2 hours conversion was finally successful! But the virtual Windows failed to start - it gave "Inaccessible boot device". I tried to "Configure machine" with the button, but received "unable to locate system volume". I converted both C: (boot partition) and D: (system partition) successfully but anyway the converter cannot find D: (???). Also I found http://communities.vmware.com/thread/219778 where I found "If this was a dual boot setup, then I don't think it's supported.", written by VMware vExpert 2009.

6. I found following KB article in MS site, strangely written only in Dutch: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/271965/nl Thanks to google it is readable in English here: http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=nl&u=http://support.microsoft.com/kb/271965/nl&ei=owv0TICaEYnHswav4-SeCw&sa=X&oi=translate&ct=result&resnum=2&ved=0CCUQ7gEwAQ&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dkb%2B271965%26hl%3Den%26prmd%3Div

There is a very simple solution to the problem - Bug #2 (most important): had to import following in the registry before conversion:

Can you hot clone and keep data upto date?

I am in need of hot cloning a physical machine (P2V) and can't afford the down time to cold clone.  The server is a file server and some files may change in the day when I'm hot cloning.  Is there a process or is the converter inteligent enough to check for file changes at the end of the clone?

Also what is the cleanest way to shutdown the old physical server and bring up the new virtual?

Thanks!

P2V and Error 2338

$

I have addressed this issue once before and thought the problem was that ports were not opened.

I am trying to use Converter Standalone from my Windows 7 domain computer to convert a physical windows 2003 server to VM.   I am using IP addresses vs servernames and also using the local administrator account to login.   As the conversion starts, it stops at 1% with the following message:

FAILED: An error occurred during the conversion:
'Platform-specific error 2338'

I have attached the agent, worker and server logs.   I am not able to interpret them.

Error 2338 appears to be very generic and does not identify the real cause of the conversion failure.   Can someone show me how to review the logs and identify what is causing this issue.   I know the ports are open since the networking guys have opened all the ports to all our esxi hosts.

Thanks

Cold Clone CD with explorer-shell and VMware workstation

I believe I can port the ColdCloneCD to BartPE.

With explorer-shell and VMware-workstation on the same CD the Enterprise CD would become really useful.

If VMware is interested ...  - I got a few questions.

- coldclone.exe launches factory.exe, eula.exe and then converter.exe - with which parameters does it call converter.exe ?

- is it possible to just add the coldclone options to the regular converter GUI ? If yes - how do I call converter.exe ?

P2V sync after post conversion cleanup

$

Hello,

I have been pretty successful with P2V's using converter by following this process.

1) perform P2V

2) power on VM (with network disconnected), install vmware tools, assign static IP, remove vendor software/hardware (missing nics, raid controller, raid management, etc)

3) power off physical and turn on network for virtual

My question is regarding using the sync function. If I P2V a machine and not perform final sync, what happens to the new VM, if I do all the steps in option #2 above, and then sync changes afterwards? I'll give an example of why I'm asking this. I perform a P2V at 8pm, do all my cleanup that I mention in #2, and then shut off the VM. The following morning, the app owner comes in, performs a sync of the P2V, shuts down physical, and then turns on VM.

I guess what I'm asking is, if that happens, will any of the cleanup work that I did the night before be lost, or cause issues with the sync?

I typically have the app owner readily available to test the P2V right away, not the next morning/afternoon

Thanks

Mark

Hi,

Converter fails at 97% when reconfiguring data store

I tried converting this server 8 times so far.

The first 5 times I did not have sysprep on my C drive (I thought I needed it on the server)

This is a production server, so I don't want to mess it up. It is the secondary server of a Citrix Metaframe farm (2 of 2), and the hard drive is M, not C.

I am guessing the problem seems to be the RAID controller. It is RAID 5 on a Compaq Smart Array 5i. It reads the disk 0 as SCSI (Port:2; Target ID: 4, LUN:0). The disk is 16.95 GB, with a 36 MB FAT (EISA Configuration), then a M drive NTFS of 11.6GB, and 5.32 GB unallocated.

The machine is an old Compaq ProLiant DL380 G2. Which should be a great test machine since it will not use a lot of resources on the vmware server (powerEdge 2950)

The sysprep is version 1.1.

If I do the import without running "Reconfigure destination virtual machine" (sysprep) at the end, it ends the convertionsuccesfully, but of course it fails to boot.

The 97% convertion also fails to boot as well, with error 0x0000007b Inaccessible_boot_device. When I searched this error it seemed that it can be because of the controller drivers, and I tried both, the buslogic and LSI logic with no success.

I am using ESXi version 4.0

I did not change the settings on the Data to copy.

This is my first conversion, and it is not looking good. I would really like to convert this server since I have 3 with the same hardware, so i am expecting this problem to pop up with the other 2 as well.

unable to create a VSS snapshot of source volume(s) p2v 2008 R2

I am trying to convert a physical Server 2008 R2.  I have previously converted two other physical 2008 r2 servers but the one I am trying now keeps failing with error:  FAILED: Unable to create a VSS snapshot of the source volume(s). Error code:2147754766 (0x8004230E).  The two successful conversions I had to install ShadowProtect by StorageCraft for them to work.  I have done the same thing on the server that is failing but it did not resolve the issue.  I have verified that my MS volume shadow copy is set to manual and is started as well as the VSS service.  I also ran vssadmin list writers and that runs successfully as well.  I am running VMware vCenter Converter Standalone 4.30.  I have the logs if anyone would like to look at them.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

P2V SQL Svr

We have a small app and db running on a physical server and want to P2V it "hot" or online.  Does the converter go back and check for changes to the source and apply the changes to the vm?  Meaning, if the source physical box is in production and has R/W occuring throughout the conversion, will the Coverter keep track of those changes and apply them or is it a point in time conversion (i.e. similar to a snapshot)?

I'm wanting to do this early in the morning and therefore schedule it and have it shutdown the source as soon as it is done and want to make sure all the current data will be migrated to the vm.

Appreciate any feedback.

Error During Conversion

I am trying to P2V a physical Linux (RHEL 5.3 64-bit) system with VMware vCenter Converter Standalone v5 to our VMware ESX 4.1 server farm. All datastores on this farm (there are 4 in total) are VMFS 3 with block size 1048576. There are serveral VMs on the datastore(s) already so altering the block size may not be an option.

The physical server has

102MB  /boot

239GB /

33GB swap

When the P2V discovery takes place, I get the error - "Error: The file system on 'datastore_name' does not support file this large. Please check the file system block size".

How can I make this conversion work?

Any leads are appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Conversion fails: unable to reconfigure the target virtual machine

Hello everyone,

First time on the forums and I am sure not the last as I am quite the novice at virtualization. I hope I can get some feedback on how I can resolve the issue I am having.

I am running ESXi 4.1.0 with only 2 virtual machines at the moment. I have an old webserver that is starting to fail me (the NIC card fails and not to mention the disk space that is running out). The idea was to do a P2V conversion but I ran into a few issues along the way. The first was the sysprep error but I researched and was able to get past that. I let the conversion go and it stopped at 95% and told me that it failed because it could not "reconfigure the target viritual machine". I exported the logs and have attached them if anyone would be willing to give them a look. I have tried examining them myself but cannot make sense of it. The old webserver is running Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard. I am running the standalone vCenter converter 4.0.1. Thank you for your help.

Please fix the download for Converter 3.0.3

Unable to detect disk or volumes on the source machine (Ubuntu 10.04 LTS)

I'm trying to move a virtual machine from proxmox to ESXi.

The VM I'm trying to move with Converter is an Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, but the Converter gives me the following message "Unable to detect disks or volumes on the source machine. Make sure that the source is a supported Linux distribution".

Does anyone knows how I can solve this? (It would also make me happy if anyone knows how I can convert .raw images to a vmware vm).
