the destination guest os cannot be reconfigured

$

Hi

I'm trying to convert a fusion VM running 32bit linux to run on my ESXi 6 server ... the conversion seems to go ok but the converted VM doesn't boot - i'm getting a call stack dump on the OS boot screen, which I can't figure out as I can't scroll up on that to see what blew up.

I did notice however, when I was in the conversion wizard, a warning: 'the destination guest os cannot be reconfigured' which I suspect may have something to do with it.

Any ideas where to go from here?

TIA

Hi All,

I need to convert an old server to a VM. The server has an USB external drive attached which is a separat partition in Windows.

I would like to convert everything (internal hard drive and USB drive) to a VM one to one.

Is this supported with the converter 5.0?

Thanks,

Edy

P2V Unable to obtain hardware information for the selected machine

Hi All!

I am (for the first time) trying to do a P2V conversion.

Target machine is a remotely located SBS2008.

I have installed the vCenter Converter Client 5.1 on my local laptop

I installed the agent (found in the installation directory on my laptop) on the remote server.

I opened the ports that i found on the vmware site in the remote sites firewall (8089, 139, 445, 9090, 137 and 138)

When i enter the connection details in the convertor i do receive the SSL Cert popup (so there is a connection established), but when i click "ignore" he just presents me: "Unable to obtain hardware information for the selected machine"

I have been looking around for some howto's or additional info but had a hard time finding it ;-)

Thanks a lot for the feedback!

SUSE with LVM doesn't boot

Hello everybody.

I have converted openSUSE 10.2 64-bit by Converter 5 Standalone. Type of coversion was by volumes.

The converter created 2 virtual disks. The first with /boot partition and the second with rest of volumes. At the and there was an error with the configuration of the virtual machine.

I repeated the conversion with the option "don't configurate". Then I booted VM to rescue, made chroot, mkinitrd but the volume group "system" was not recognized.

Where is the problem?

Thanks a lot.

P2V linux conversion fails with fault.ManagedDiskOpenFault.summary

Hi everybody,

I am getting this really strange/rare error when trying to do a P2V converion. Both remote Linux Server as well as the local Win7 PC.

from gui-log:

2013-11-02T10:31:37.409+01:00 [12580 error 'wizardController'] Unable to submit job: converter.fault.ManagedDiskOpenFault

2013-11-02T10:31:37.409+01:00 [12580 verbose 'Locale'] Default resource used for 'ManagedDiskOpenFault.summary' expected in module 'fault'.

2013-11-02T10:31:37.409+01:00 [09512 error 'ConversionState'] Submit job failed: fault.ManagedDiskOpenFault.summary

2013-11-02T10:31:37.409+01:00 [09512 error 'ConverterWizardWindow'] Next/Finish failed: fault.ManagedDiskOpenFault.summary

Interesting part from hostd.log on ESXi Host where vcenter Vapp is running and VM is supposed to be created:

hostd.log:2013-11-02T09:43:47.912Z [42B81B70 warning 'Hostsvc.VFlashManager' opID=hostd-d733] GetVFlashResourceRuntimeInfo: vFlash is not licensed, not supported

kinda seems to be the tipping point after which the vmx creation starts getting rolled back again. The disks to trash for a short few seconds before the error appears btw.

Neither vFlush nor ManagedDiskOpenFault give me any useful google or forum hits...

anybody got hunches?

thanks a lot in advance

Error : Unable to obtain hardware information for the selected machine -- Log : Cannot query source HW info: vmodl.fault.SystemError

Hi,

I'm being stuck in a project and desperate help needed after long time of searching here and on Google...

The Scenario

There are VMs on 2 x ESX 3.5 servers and 2 x Hyper-V servers to be migrated to 5 x new ESXi 5.5 servers.  But now the new servers are installed with ESXi 5.0 as I found that VMs from ESX3.5 probably cannot migrate to ESXi5.5 directly.  I installed vCenter Server 5.5 on a physical Windows 2012 server, and on the same machine I installed vCenter Converter Standalone 5.0 for the VM migration.  All ESX, ESXi and Hyper-V hosts are on the same network, with old hosts having storage on a Dell MD3000 and new ESXi hosts having storage on NetApp.  And plan to do in-place upgrade of ESXi 5.0 to ESXi 5.5 by Update Manager after all VM migrations successful.

Source - Hyper-V (Win 08 Server R2), ESX 3.5 Update 2

Destination - ESXi 5.0 cluster

vCenter Server - 5.5

Guest OSs : Windows 2003, Windows 2008

Requirements:

- move VMs from the source hosts to the destination cluster

     - VMs preferred to be migrated online (but offline still OK if it's the only option)

- shutdown source

       - bring up VMs on new hosts

The Issue

Using vCenter Converter Standalone 5.0, I can connect to the Hyper-V servers and the ESX 3.5 hosts and see the VM inventory.  However when try to choose the VM to convert, an error occured :

Error : Unable to obtain hardware information for the selected machine

(as shown in attached Pic 1.jpg)

And the conversion cannot proceed further.  I exported the diagnostics logs too and also attached in this thread.  There is an error of "Cannot query source HW info: vmodl.fault.SystemError" in the log.

- Anyone hitted this same issue before?

- Any idea on how to solve it?

- If not, then are there any other alternatives to migrate the VMs from Hyper-V/ ESX 3.5 to ESXi 5.5?

Thanks everyone!

Calvin

"Error: Unable to obtain the IP address of the destination virtual machine running the Converter helper server." with static IP address

Hi all,

I am trying to p2v linux 6.4. It fails with the following message:

Error: Unable to obtain the IP address of the destination virtual machine running the Converter helper server.

I saw discussion about this message but they all refer to dynamic IP address taken from DHCP while in my case I use static IP address.

While waiting for the p2v (which then fails ...) I open helper machine console and saw a message:

eth0 is not a recognized interface.

Can anybody tell me what is going on ?

Converting a Physical SQL Server to Virtual

$

Hello all,

We have a large SQL server that we would like to virtualize into our datacenter.  I attempted to do this over this weekend, but found that it was going to take 4.5 days to complete.  I was trying to do this over a 100MB MPLS connection.  We're looking at about 3TB of data to migrate.  Before I started the conversion, I stopped all of the SQL services.  This of course takes our databases down.  We cannot be down for 4 days however.  I pretty much have 2 days to get this done.

My question is: Can I leave my databases (Sharepoint) up and running while I do the conversion and then schedule the synchronization of changes when I want to move over to the virtual server?

It was my understanding that this would not update the database changes.  Is that the case?

Thanks,

T

Ports to be opened for P2V

Hi folks,

Have a question on ports required to P2V a server to vCenter server cluster (not directly to ESXi host) with the standalone converter tool installed directly on the source.

Do I need to open the firewall ports from source to vCenter cluster IP or to the individual vCenter servers and to all ESXi hosts in the HA cluster as well ?

Source machine with Standalone Converter Installed ==>> Destination vCenter Server Cluster

from Source machine TCP 443 undirectional to vCenter cluster IP for vCenter communications.....and to individual vCenter servers in the vcenter cluster and all ESXi hosts??

from source machine TCP 902 unidirectional to vCenter server cluster IP for cloning process.....and to individual vCenter servers in the vcenter cluster and all ESXi hosts??

Thank you for your help in advance!!!

Hello everybody

We have 3 BlueOnyx on 5106R version. We want to convert to virtual machines the 3 physical machines.

We try to do it using the Vmware vConverter 5.5.3 to convert the 3 powered-on Linux machines.

I see the ssh connection and sftp connection using wireshark but I can't see the "View source details" information.

Vmware vConverter sent the error message fault.SysinfoQueryLinuxFault.summary (seeing in attachement).

BlueOnyx is based on the Centos 5 32 bits so I installed the same Centos version for try to convert it to virtual machine using Vmware vConverter.

I have successfully this conversion so I didn't understand what is the problem.

If someony can help me to do it ...

Thanks in advance for your help

Best regards

Matt

Cannot P2V a larger then 2TB physical machine

$

Hi all,

I am trying to P2V a physical Linux box, but when I do the proccess using "VMware vCenter Converter" I got an error when software is trying to partitionate destination disk:

"FAILED: An error ocurred during the conversion: Volume group 'XXXX' has insufficient free space (xxxx extents): yyyy required."

It says that I do not have free space and free extents to use.

My scenario basically is:

- REAL BOX

Red Hat Server Linux using LVM. The VG group has almost 3.4 TB. The biggest single partition is a data storage partition and has 3.1 TB.

- VMWARE

ESXi 5.5.0 with a iSCSI datastore using VMFS5. 5.49TB total space (just 800MB are being used to store some ISO files).

When I start P2V proccess, It forces me to choose VM Type 10 because the vmdk file size, so, that's OK. But when it starts to partitioning disk, I got the error wrote above. I have tried to increase destination disk size in Vmware Converter's Options in wizard: it just changed free/required extents values, but I still got the error.

So, I suppose that using VM type 10 and 5.5.0 I could work with files greater then 2TB. Anyway, I am in trouble with this error message.

Any help??

Best regards.
