I recently started using the newly released Converter 5.0.0 . I had successfully done over 30 P2V's of Windows 2003 systems using version 4.3. Immediately, I noticed two problems:
1) The average transfer rate dropped from about 100 MB/s to between 0.8 and 2 MB/s.
2) The process consistently failed following completion of C: drive cloning and starting on the D: drive.
I tried this on 5 different physical servers going to 5 different VMware ESXi 4.1 host servers and the result was always the same. I assumed it was a Network or Firewall problem and sent the Network team on a "wild goose chase" for 2 days. After they were convinced that the physical machine being P2V'd was simply not sending sufficient packets, I went back and re-installed version 4.3 and restarted the P2V transfer. This time I received an average transfer rate of 100 MB/s (50x faster) and the entire process completed successfully.
Has anyone else seen a similar problem? Any possible explanations?
Hi,
When trying to convert a physical Linux host to the Vmware ESXi 5.5 server I get an error almost immediately after the start of the conversion, when trying to convert a windows physical machine to the ESXi server there is no problem.
Anyone any ideas or suggestions ?
Here is the exact error :

Using Converter Standalone 6 client and attempting to convert a CentOS 6.5 physical box, the process goes to 97% and then gives this error: "Partition number must be set for the boot volume". The result was a virtual machine with disks that appeared to be of correct size, but would not boot. The target destination was vCenter 5.5 U2. In the converter worker log, I see a number of interesting items regarding disks, but am not sure what they might mean. What can I look for to troubleshoot this specific issue? Thanks.
I'm trying to convert a physical Windows Server 2003 SP2 Web Edition with the converter (v 5.1) and every time it fails with the error " FAILED: An error occurred during the conversion: 'Platform-specific error 2338'
Some of the errors in the log appear to point to a disk problem but I defragmented the disk and then ran a chkdsk and the disk looks good.
I appreciate any help.
Hi all,
I built a Windows Server 2008 R2 virtual machine from scratch and configured it with the base setups that I want all of my Server 2008 R2 virtual machines to have. I tested everything and it works fine. I have installed and configured IIS, set up virtual directories and that is all working as well. I powered the machine off and exported it to an OVF template. I then deployed that template, configured it using the vCenter Converter Standalone tool and powered on the machine, left it sysprep, and when it's all done, IIS doesn't work.
Here's my configuration. We have 3 VM hosts, each running different versions of ESXI. The 3 versions we are using are:
The versions of vCenter Converter Standalone that I've tried using for configuring the machine I deployed using the template include:
The VM that I refer to that I built and exported to a template was built on the VM host version 4.0.0-208167. I have tried deploying that template to all 3 VM hosts with them all having the same issues.
And here's the issue I'm having. When I first try accessing the server's default web site (or any virtual directory created within the default web site for that matter), I get a 503 error. I look in the event viewer and there is an event log with this info:
After searching online, I found an article that indicated to go into the file C:\Windows\system32\inetsrv\config\applicationHost.config, find the <configProtectedData> node and remove the providers section, and then do an iisreset. I did this and when I browsed to the default web site, all was well and I thought I was good to go.
But not quite. Next thing I needed to do was update some of the virtual directories that were previously configured on the base template to point to a network share that was specific to each server I deploy and configure from the template. That virtual directory is set up to Connect As a domain account. If I try to update the network share from within the IIS management console, when I try to close the window I get an error 'Value does not fall within the expected range'.
So I searched online for this problem. I found an article (http://forums.iis.net/p/1160389/1915020.aspx#1915020) that indicated to run the following command to resolve this problem:
iissetup.exe /install SharedLibraries
It even indicates that you will get an error, but that it still resolves the problem. So I gave it a shot and it did indeed resolve the problem. And you would think this would be good news. However, the first problem is now back.
I've used PsGetsid to make sure that the machine I deployed using the template has a different SID than the template had and they do indeed have different SIDs.
So at this point, I'm not sure what else to look at or try. I've been looking at google, these forums, MSDN, stackoverflow, etc. for days to no avail. Any help would be extremely appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Eric
Hello,
I'm trying to convert a physical machine which runs RedHat EL 5.1 with Converter Standalone 5.1 installed on Windows 7.
The process start by taking the fingerprint of the source system and this step fails. I see in '/var/log/secure' that SSH connections are succesful (root connection is allowed, both source machine and converter are on the same LAN and IP addresses are authorized anywhere).
During the attempt, I can see that the temporary folder is created under /tmp/.
I tried with Convert 5.0.1 & 4.1, but same failure.
Anyone has an idea of the root cause?
I am running Converter on Windows 7 ans trying to make a virtual machine of the current installation to upgrade to Windows 10.
Whenever I start to use the converter I get this error message "Unable to complete Converter agent installation on Dell-9020. Another version of this product is already installed.
I have looked around the machine and the only one I can find is the current installation.
Anyone any ideas. Thanks
Hello,
I am tring to convert from Win VISTA to VMFusion
Whe the conversion process it 98% I get:
UNABLE TO FIND THE SYSTEM VOLUME, RECONFIGURATION IS NOT POSSIBLE
I already read some suggestino in the community but I am not sure what I have to do.
I attach LOG file
Just want to know, on a Vmware ESX 3i 3.5.0, on a hard disk crash scenario, when only the hard disk has been replaced. How do yo do a ovf import (backup) that will not require windows activation.
I need to perform the P2V conversion of a legacy Windows 98 client.
The client hosts legacy applications that must run on a Windows 98 box.
I attempted converting it using Converter 3.x but it looks to be unable to install the agent.
Should I install Converter on the Windows 98 box itself?
Should I use any other procedure, maybe based on a third party backup solution?
Suggestions, pointers and hints welcome...

I used P2V to transfer a 2003 Windows server to a virtual machine. It works and will boot up but I can't interact with it at all. Sending a ctrl-alt-del from the VM menu does nothing. The mouse and keyboard will not work either. I have tried this in VMWare server and workstation. I can't get into bios to check settings because the keyboard will not interact with the machine. HELP!
Hi Folks,
I have one Ubuntu 14.04 Server installed Physically on IBM server with Raid and all configured.
I have installed on ESXi host 6.0 for trial purposes and trying to do P2V migration testing using "VMware-converter-en-6.1.0-3410145" converter tool
I can start the converter successfully by putting server details and ESXi host details. but once converter start process it stucks at 1% and cant progress.
Yesterday, after few hours of process if gave me "ERROR:Cannot communicate with the remote host, either due to network errors or because the host is not"
can someone help me to complete my test successfully or reason why it is stuck at 1%.

Trying to install the standalone version of vCenter Converter on a windows xp box. It starts to go through the setup and then towards the end it gives on error 29190. Could not generate secure sockets layer (ssl) key. Any ideas?
What is strange to me is that I know I'm using the correct credentials and my account is in the local admin group for the target machine.
Note these two, seemingly conflicting, log entries:
2014-02-19T08:05:08.856-08:00 [06688 info 'Default'] [user,874] Successfully authenticated user ZOOMSYSTEMS\Peter.Bollwerk-priv from ::1

Also found this entry in the gui log:
2014-02-19T08:11:55.909-08:00 [02612 error 'wizardController'] Must be administrator to access physical computer
What am I missing here?
I have verified I have admin rights on both the target and source computers.
I am using the correct credentials.
I am using the Standalone Converter 5.5.
I've recently moved over to VMWare Player and used VMWare Converter Standalone v4.3.0 to convert my old VMs. Once all the VMs were converted I uninstalled VMWare Converter Standalone from the host..
I now find I need to convert one additional VM, but when I attempt to reinstall VMWare Converter Standalone I get the following error:
Error 29163. Could not copy file C:\DOCUME~1\<User>\LOCALS~1\Temp\converter-agent.xml
Where <User> represents my userid.
Things I've checked include:
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

I am trying to convert a physical Server 2008 R2. I have previously converted two other physical 2008 r2 servers but the one I am trying now keeps failing with error: FAILED: Unable to create a VSS snapshot of the source volume(s). Error code:2147754766 (0x8004230E). The two successful conversions I had to install ShadowProtect by StorageCraft for them to work. I have done the same thing on the server that is failing but it did not resolve the issue. I have verified that my MS volume shadow copy is set to manual and is started as well as the VSS service. I also ran vssadmin list writers and that runs successfully as well. I am running VMware vCenter Converter Standalone 4.30. I have the logs if anyone would like to look at them. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I am trying to convert a Windows 7 machine with 4GB into a VM using VMware vCenter Converter standalone.
I keep on getting following internal error:
Error vmware-converter-worker[05796] [Originator@6876 sub=Ufa.HTTPService]
Failed to read request; stream: <io_obj p:0x01446f2c, h:-1, <pipe '\\.\pipe\vmware-converter-worker-soap'>,
<pipe '\\.\pipe\vmware-converter-worker-soap'>>,
error: class Vmacore::TimeoutException(Operation timed out)
I have tried to disable UAC and Turn of firewall and antivirus. I am lost here. Any hints on how to fix this?
I found some info linking this to an issue regarding systems that have the /3GB switch added in the boot.ini file located on the boot drive - but I have no boot.ini on the computer.
TIA, Kind regards S. Dalby
