P2V Windows Server with multiple logical disks - creates 1 vmdk

$

Hi - when using VMware Converter what is the reason for creating 1 vmdk file when doing a P2V of a server that has 2 disks? Why doesn't it create two vmdk files?

Do most people just run the converter several times selecting 1 disk at a time??

When I select the C: and D: volumes of the server and resize them - instead of creating 2x15GB vmdk's it creates a 30GB vmdk.

What's best??

Converter Standalone Agent installation failed (Error Code: 1618)

I have two pretty much identical Windows 2000 servers that I am doing P2V conversions using Converter 4.0.1

My first server converted without any problems...however, my second server gets to the Converter Standalone Agent deployment and then fails with an error message "Converter Standalone Agent installation failed on 'XXX.XX.XXX.XXX'. Error Code: 1618.

I have used Port Query against the ports that are indicated in support document 1010056 and noticed that port 9089 is "listening" on the first server but "not listening" on the second server...I suspect this is the problem, but I have no idea how to resolve it...how do I go about making port 9089 a "listening" port?

Problems Converting Win2k Server: KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED on boot

Hi there,

I'm trying to convert a windows 2000 server sp4 box using VM Converter 3 enterprise direct to ESX, and am encountering a BSOD when I try and boot the resultant VM.

Error message is:

STOP: 0x0000001E (0xC0000005, 0x8045D9BF, 0x0000000, 0x001A0018)

\** Address 8045D9BF base at 80400000, Datestamp 45069e6e - ntoskrnl.exe

I've tried the fix for windows sp4 rollup and scsiport.sys to no avail, and besides, this error address is different.  Is there anything anyone can suggest to try?

Hi folks,

when we try to install (as administrator) the actual converter on our windows 2003 std. 32 bit server (domain controller, 1 nic, fully ms patched) we always receive the following error:

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Error: program: ... vmware vcenter converter\vmware-converter.exe. The application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusal way.

The eventlog says:

Product: VMware vCenter Converter Standalone -- Error 1920.Service VMware vCenter Converter Server (vmware-converter-server) failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services.

We have tried to change temp / tmp enviroment, older converter versions, different installation path, changed service account, deleted tmp / registry entries ... Nothing helps !

Anyone got a solution for that ?

Best regards

Frank

Using vConverter 4.3 unable to complete a P2V conversion, the following message appears: "Error: Unable to connect to the Converter helper server on the destination virtual machine." I set up an ip address manually to the Helper Server, but we did not succeed.

Anyone have a script to remove all the HP/Compaq agents after conversion?

Hi,

With both old school P2V and the new converter tool, we have to uninstall about 10 HP agents/tools from "Add/Remove Programs", manually uninstall the HP  Network Configuration Utility, and delete two registry keys that "Add/Remove Programs" does not remove after the conversion is completed.

Does anyone have any sweet scripts or tools to do all this automatically?

Thanks

Converter 5 does not recognize LVM partition on Oracle Linux 6

I've got two physical servers running Oracle Linux Server release 6.3 64-bit.  They each have a /boot partition that is ext4 and the rest on an LVM partition:

/dev/mapper/vg_cleveland-lv_root /                       ext4    defaults        1 1
UUID=3d37688e-305a-4974-9bb7-f02232b78790 /boot                   ext4    defaults        1 2
/dev/mapper/vg_cleveland-lv_swap swap                    swap    defaults        0 0
tmpfs                   /dev/shm                tmpfs   defaults        0 0
devpts                  /dev/pts                devpts  gid=5,mode=620  0 0
sysfs                   /sys                    sysfs   defaults        0 0
proc                    /proc                   proc    defaults        0 0

vCenter Converter is only recognizing the /boot partition in the "Data to copy" section "Select volumes to copy".

If I go forward the conversion fails when trying to reconfigure the VM.  I've looked through the user guide and googled a bit but I can't seem to find why the ext4 LVM partition is not being recognized by Converter 5.

VM shows BSOD after P2V

Hi everybody,

i have done P2V with a Windows Server 2003 R2 using Converter 5.0.1 Standalone. Now the VM is booting up with a BSOD. The Errorcode 0x0000007E refers to a missing SCSI driver. The Harddisk isnt present in VMs BIOS. The VM only boots up in Safe Mode. In Safe Mode Windows tries to install the missing driver, but then i get an error telling me that the selected driver is not supported in Windows XP. I have done the following to solve this problem, with no affect:

-       Inject the SCSI drivers to the Conversion source

-       Copied the SCSI drivers from a working Windows Server 2003 R2 VM to the converted VM

-       Mounted VMware Tools and tried to copy the SCSI drivers

I am running out of ideas and I hope that someone has experienced the same problem and could give me a hint how to solve this.

Converter Job failing trying to copy live system.

I'm trying to copy a live Centos 5 system to a new ESX environment in order to upgrade it. I'm using ESXi 6.0.0 and the standalone converter 6.0.0 build=2716716. I create the job to copy the system, and it runs a while and then fails with the message A General System error occurred: No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it.

Why would the machine the tool creates refuse the connection to transfer data. I've done some google searches on this and most everything I've found points to a network misconfiguration. I've manually set the ip address of the ESXi system and the new system, so I'm not using DHCP to get addresses.

"An error occurred during the conversion: 'BlockLevelCloningMgr..."

I was converting a Physical Windows Server 2008 R2 machine using Converter Standalone 6.1.1.  It got to 86% and failed with the following error...

An error occurred during the conversion: 'BlockLevelVolumeCloneMgr::CloneVolume: Detected a write error during the cloning of volume \WindowsBitmapDriverVolumeId=[63-D4-6D-F7-00-00-50-C2-0A-00-00-00]. Error: 5243025 (type: 1, code: 327689)'

I am migrating all three of it's disks OS drive (C:), "data" drive (D:), and file share drive (E:).  It successfully migrated C: and D: but failed during the migration of E:.  I did some digging in the logs but didn't find anything that caught my attention on the specific reason it failed other than it failed.

I have looked through the discussion boards and haven't found anything related to this Error code.  Has anyone else come across this before and was able to address the error?

I have also attached the log file bundle to this post.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Poor transfer rate using Converter 5.0 Standalone compared to 4.3

$

I recently started using the newly released Converter 5.0.0 .  I had successfully done over 30 P2V's of Windows 2003 systems using version 4.3.  Immediately, I noticed two problems:

1) The average transfer rate dropped from about 100 MB/s to between 0.8 and 2 MB/s.

2) The process consistently failed following completion of C: drive cloning and starting on the D: drive.

I tried this on 5 different physical servers going to 5 different VMware ESXi 4.1 host servers and the result was always the same.  I assumed it was a Network or Firewall problem and sent the Network team on a "wild goose chase" for 2 days.  After they were convinced that the physical machine being P2V'd was simply not sending sufficient packets, I went back and re-installed version 4.3 and restarted the P2V transfer.  This time I received an average transfer rate of 100 MB/s (50x faster) and the entire process completed successfully.

Has anyone else seen a similar problem?  Any possible explanations?

Troubleshooting:

Cleared space on system drive

I was unable to modify the following registry key from REG_SZ to Reg_Expand_SZ  (per     Problem in VMWARE P2V Conversion of Windows Server 2003 )

  • I tried by renaming the current TypeLib (REG_SZ) and creating a new TypeLib with Reg_Expand_SZ, but changing it doesn't seem to resolve the issue, and it changes back after a reboot.

Conversion fails due to SSL certificate issues - can I work around this?

$

I'm starting the process of migrating a collection of VMs in a KVM environment to an existing vSphere cluster and am trying to use Converter (5.5) to do a live conversion/migration of an Ubuntu box, but it's failing due to create the virtual disk on one of hosts due to the SSL certificate, and I haven't found any other posts or articles specifically about this (seems like most SSL related items are about improving speed)

From the worker log, I can see that:

  • Converter is able to successfully create the target VM
  • The attempt to create the virtual disk fails due to the SSL certificate not being valid (All systems in the cluster appear to be using VMware default certs).  From the worker log file:

2014-08-07T09:35:13.947-07:00 [06620 warning 'Default'] [,0] SSL_IsVerifyEnabled: failed to read registry value. Falling back to default behavior: verification on. LastError = 0

  • The target VM is deleted.

Is it possible to simply disable the certificate validation for this process?  From the log, it sounds like there's a registry key that would control it, but I haven't found any information on it (or guessed it correctly).  Or can I import that cert to the local Windows system running Converter to get around it (I haven't been successful with that approach yet either)

It's actually not clear to me which system is doing the validation.  While the worker log states it connecting to the vSphere host, there is no such line indicating it's connecting to the host where the target VM is located, and it looks like that's the host with the certificate that is deemed invalid.   Is the validation not happening on my local system that is running Converter? (the vCenter server settings shows that the "vCenter requires verified host SSL certificates" checkbox is unchecked already)

Thanks,

Scott

Converter 5.5.3, ESXI 6.0, P2V.  "An error occurred during the conversion: 'converter.fault.FileIOFault'"

The Job failed at 35%.  When I looked up the error it says that a HD error occurred and that I need to do a defrag.  Before I do this I want to check and make sure that 5.5.3 converter is compatible with ESXi 6.  I can't seem to find anything on this.

This is my environment:

Physical Box: IBM, Intel Dual 8c processors, 16 GB Ram, Raid 10

Virtual environment: (host)Dell r620, Intel Dual 8c processors, 64 GB Ram.  (san) Equallogic 6100, Raid 10

Thanks all, I just dont want to waste my time doing a defrag if the converter is not compatible.

Converter 5.0 error: "Crypto exception: error:02001005"

$

I'm trying to convert a running physical Windows Server 2003 machine using Converter 5.0. The target is a VMware Server 2.x box.

When I launch the wizard and enter credentials for the powered-on machine, I'm using its IP address and an account in its domain (IT). The VMware Server machine is in a different domain and forest.

After I put in the credentials, I get the following error:

A general system error occurred: Crypto Exception: error:02001005:system library:fopen:Input/output error:unable to load C:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware vCenter Converter Standalone\ssl\rui.crt

Here's what I've tried so far:

1. Verified that the target rui.crt file exists at the specified path and that the domain account I'm using to run the converter has full access to it.

2. Running the converter using the Windows 2003 "Run As" command, specifying the domain admin account I'm currently logged in with and unchecking "Run this program with restricted access"

3. Running with "Run As" using a different domain admin account

4. Removing and reinstalling the converter

The conversion starts normally if I run the client from the machine hosting VMware Server and let it connect to the agent on the source machine, but I'd like to know why the client fails when run directly on the source, as I have several of these machines to convert. Any suggestions would be welcome.

What is strange to me is that I know I'm using the correct credentials and my account is in the local admin group for the target machine.

Note these two, seemingly conflicting, log entries:

2014-02-19T08:05:08.856-08:00 [06688 info 'Default'] [user,874] Successfully authenticated user ZOOMSYSTEMS\Peter.Bollwerk-priv from ::1

Also found this entry in the gui log:

2014-02-19T08:11:55.909-08:00 [02612 error 'wizardController'] Must be administrator to access physical computer

What am I missing here?

I have verified I have admin rights on both the target and source computers.

I am using the correct credentials.

I am using the Standalone Converter 5.5.
