I tried to run converter "as administrator" but I got the same error twice.

Here are the logs export.

Thanks for your help !

Converter 5.1 - error 2338

Hi,

I have several VM's on 2 locations, one datacenter that is managed by us on our site and several VM's hosted on external hosting company datacenter.

Our own platform runs for now version 4.3 and the remote location run 5.1

I need to import few VM's from the remote location to our own location and trying to do that using Converter 5.1 hot-cloning.

The converter is installed on dedicated VM with external NIC that is reachable from the remote location and internal NIC that is connected to the vcenter and the ESXi hosts.

The converter is able to connect to the remote VM and get all settings done, but when I'm trying to run it, it fails at 1% with the error "Platform specific error 2338"

I checked the logs and so far was able to find out only those errors:

warning 'Default'] Disk number 1 has been skipped because of errors while reading partition table

warning 'Default'] Disk number 1 has been skipped because of errors while reading dynamic disks header or LDM database is corrupted

warning 'Default'] [MoveActiveDiskIfNeeded] GetFirstBootDisk failed, mntapi error: 176

warning 'Default'] Partition:Invalid sector magic number

warning 'Default'] [PopulateCapabilities] Volume-based cloning was disabled due to: <no volumes are recognized>

Any idea what can be the problem here and how it can be resolved?

I saw that those errors are mentioned with Converter 4.3, but I'm using Converter 5.1

The source VM is Windows 7SP1

Attaching the log for more information.

Any help will be highly appreciated.

Steps To Take Before Running VMware Converter

Is it necessary to run a defrag of SBS Server 2003 server that's 4 years before running VMware Converter? This server has never had a disk defragment done on it.

I'm trying to P2V (Using VMWare Converter 4) a Redhat Linux server and it keeps failing at 31%.  The Status in the Converter shows as: FAILED: MethodFault.summary when it fails.

Both the server's NIC and the VMWare ESXi 4 server are set to 1000 MBit/s, Full Duplex.

I've tried the conversion without tweaking any of the destination specs (ie RAM, disk space, etc), but with the same results. It seems to fail after starting to clone the volume mounted on /var

IPv6 isn't turned on for the ESXi server. I'm running the conversion from my Windows XP SP3 desktop.

I've attached the diagnostic logs.

Thank you in advance for any insight.

P2V importparams issue

Hello,

I'm using the converter-tool provided with the Converter Enterprise Plugin.

I'm running some issues with the importparams attributes in the p2v xml file.

Here's my syntax :

The params like numCPUs, memoryMB, or diskControllerType are not considered. My VM always have 1 CPU and the same memory amount than the source machine.

Surprisingly, the network mapping parameter does work, as my VM gets the good mapping.

Does anybody have any idea ?

Conversion Error: Unable to clone disk

Hi,

I have a VMware Workstation VM that I would like to import into a vSphere 4.1 ESXi environment.

As far as I can tell, the only way for me to do this is to run vCenter Converter Standalone (Converter running on the server doesn't seem to be a solution for me since I don't have any Windows shares where I can store the VM).

Unfortunately, every time I try to run Converter I get the following error at 1-2%:

Error: Unable to clone disk <path>.vmdk on the virtual machine 'New_VM'.

Any advice?

Thanks.

VMware Physical to Virtual Conversion - No VMware products on site

I’m still expanding my VMware skills so I’m not sure how to do this or if it can be done.

The scenario: No VMware products on site (or in network).

Need: Want to do a P2V on a Linux webserver and send/relocate to a datacenter

Problem: What tool(s) to use. The current VMware vCenter Converter Standalone wants details for the destination server

Any other free VMware product (or third party) that will convert a physical box and create vmdk or ova file that can be shipped/mailed to the datacenter?

Thanks in advance

Laptop P2V Nightmare

I have tried every way I can think of to convert my old XP laptop to a VM running under VMware Workstation 6 RC on my new Vista laptop.  I backed up my old laptop using Ghost and restored it successfully to a new VM.  This was after trying to get the VMware Converter boot CD to work which didn't like the drives I was mapping for a temp location.  It was also after trying to do a hot migration with Converter and getting repeated vmsnap permission errors.  I did use Converter to run the Configure Machine job and that did complete successfully.  But unfortunately I am getting the 7B STOP BSOD.  I ran the Configure job multiple times to no avail.

I next took the step of using the old P2V Assistant to convert the VM.  It seemed to run fine but still BSOD.

Used the Bart PE FIXVMSCSI plug in and still BSOD.  Tried using both Buslogic and LSI.  No luck.  Attempted to set the scsi0.present value in the VMX to FALSE.  Still BSOD.  What a pain!!!  I have done many P2V conversions in the past with no problems.

Please let me know if anyone has any ideas of further things to try.

Thanx,

Matt Ronsman

Issue with Linux P2V

Hi All,

I am trying to convert a physical Linux machine to our ESX host, on the converter i can connect to the box, set the options including giving the helper VM a static IP as there is not DHCP on the network and i start the convert, when i look at the console on the ESX i can see the machine start to convert, it asks for a username and password to login to the helper which i do (i fixed the converter worker file to allow this) but once it logs in the conversion just sites there at 1% and does nothing else/ is there something i am missing?

Thanks.

VMware Converter not giving option to syncronize

I apologize if this is something that has been answered before, but I could not find any reference to it and I feel like I'm just missing something very simple.  I recently started working with the newest version of Converter and the problem I'm running into is it will not let me uncheck the perform final synchronization.  I can put a check in the option to synchronize, but everything else below that is greyed out.  If I uncheck the synchronize option, of course it does not give me the option to perform a sync after doing the p2v process.  Could someone please explain to me why this is doing that.

Converter 6 - Partition number must be set for the boot volume

Using Converter Standalone 6 client and attempting to convert a CentOS 6.5 physical box, the process goes to 97% and then gives this error: "Partition number must be set for the boot volume".  The result was a virtual machine with disks that appeared to be of correct size, but would not boot.  The target destination was vCenter 5.5 U2.  In the converter worker log, I see a number of interesting items regarding disks, but am not sure what they might mean.  What can I look for to troubleshoot this specific issue?  Thanks.

Boot From SAN Multipathing Physical Server Migration

$

Hi,

In my current environment we have boot from SAN configuration and we have entire storage coming from remote SAN (Multipath configured). I have tired VMware vCenter Converter Standalone 6.0 to migrate physical SUSE 11 to Virtual Machine but got error "FAILED: An error occurred during the conversion:'Partition number must be set for the boot volume'" at 97%.

While checking logs we found both the Physical Machine cloned successfully and got error while reconfiguring the destination virtual machine. Further digging into problem we have observed /boot volume is not visible at ‘Source Volume’ TAB in vConverter that means vConverter is not reading /boot volume information from the source Physical Machine. While checking at destination virtual machine we found error at console "Operating System not found".

In VMware vCenter Converter Standalone User's Guide if found "Linux volumes mounted by Device Mapper multipath" is not support for Powered On Machine.

Please help me to understand if vCenter Converter Standalone supports boot from SAN environment?

6.0 doesnt seem to work on XP with no service pack

I have been unable to install the converter or agent from the 6.0 exe's locally on the machine or from the server. Throws a generic error. but does not leave any install log behind to troubleshoot and nothing helpful in windows event log. Cant not install XP service pack 1,2 or 3 on this system due to software compatibility. I figure I need an older version of the converter that will work with this OS.screenshot01.JPG

"An error occurred during the conversion: 'BlockLevelCloningMgr..."

I was converting a Physical Windows Server 2008 R2 machine using Converter Standalone 6.1.1.  It got to 86% and failed with the following error...

An error occurred during the conversion: 'BlockLevelVolumeCloneMgr::CloneVolume: Detected a write error during the cloning of volume \WindowsBitmapDriverVolumeId=[63-D4-6D-F7-00-00-50-C2-0A-00-00-00]. Error: 5243025 (type: 1, code: 327689)'

I am migrating all three of it's disks OS drive (C:), "data" drive (D:), and file share drive (E:).  It successfully migrated C: and D: but failed during the migration of E:.  I did some digging in the logs but didn't find anything that caught my attention on the specific reason it failed other than it failed.

I have looked through the discussion boards and haven't found anything related to this Error code.  Has anyone else come across this before and was able to address the error?

I have also attached the log file bundle to this post.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Problems Migrating Windows 2012 from Xen Server to ESXi

$

Hi,

I have been searching for info on my problem and can't seem to find anything.

I have a XenServer Pool, Version 6.5. I am using the VMWare Standalone Converter to attempt to migrate VMs over to ESXi 6.0. The linux VMs I did worked great, no issues.

The same can't be said for Windows Server 2012. The VMs migrate over but when they boot I am stuck on a couple of issues that I just can't get past:

- Constant restarts and BlueScreens trying to boot. Tried Windows repair with no luck. Sometime I can get into Safe Mode without any problems but it will not boot up into regular Windows.

- A BSOD caused by xen.sys that I was able to work around that then turned into no bootable drive.

I have tried combination of uninstalling the Xen Tools, not uninstalling, installing the VmWare tool, not installing, tried exporting OVF/OVA files from Xen, etc. Nothing seems to work. When I try to look back and remember what I did and didn't do my head starts hurting.

Getting to the point where I am almost ready give up and build the VMs from scratch in ESXi. It may take a week of 14 hours days but at least I can move on to other headaches.

Any help, links, guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

K

Linux VM failing to migrate

I'm trying to move a Linux VM from 1 DC to another DC across different VLANs.  I opened up the specific ports according to this KB: VMware KB: Required VMware vCenter Converter ports.  When that didn't work I put a any/any rule in place from the Linux VM VLAN to the vCenter VLAN on the other DC and from the Source to the ESXi Host VLAN.  I can't figure out why I'm getting this error, does anyone have any ideas?
