P2V Windows XP SP3 failing at 98% with Image processing task has failed with MethodFault::Exception: sysimage.fault.ReconfigFault

$

The snapshot is successful, I've mounted the vmdk with vdk and can browse the files.  Here are the last errors in the log

Reconfiguration failed

VmiReconfigTask::task: Image processing task has failed with MethodFault::Exception: sysimage.fault.ReconfigFault

Attached is the full log with 3 converts in it.

I'm using the latest vmconverter from the website, I just downloaded it today.

I'm running the program as localadmin not on the domain.  This is a 46gb partition on a 160gb drive.  I'm only selecting the windows 46gb partition.  When I try using the vmdk even though it failed, it starts to boot then gets stuck on agpcpq.sys before it BSODs.  I can't read the bsod, it goes by too fast.

Any ideas?

Hi,

I am just trying out Converter V4.0.0, and can't get it to work.

I have tried using it to copy an ESX3i VM, and it failed at 2% with the error

FAILED: A general system error occurred: SQL_CANTOPEN:

unable to open database file

I also tried to get it to copy a Workstation 6.5 VM to Server 2.1, and that failed at 1% with the same error.

I am not sure what database it is talking about, or why it can't open it.

FWIW, I have converter running on Vista, the workstation is on the same Vista PC and the Server is running on Windows 2003.

I have admin rights to all the machines.

I have looked in the log files, but there doesn't appear to be any more information than that error.

I have searched the knowledge bases, the fora and google, but can'e find any reference to that error.

Any ideas?

Cheers

Rob

Server 2003 P2V conversion hangs...

Hello,

I've seen this problem posted before and haven't been able to use anyone elses solution to resolve this problem.  I'm attempting a P2V conversion of Windows Server 2003 Std Edition.  I'm importing the the machine via vSphere client to vCenter using vCenter Converter 4.2.1.  I've tried hot cloning this way several times and didn't get much further than 4% after letting the process run over 24 hours.  During this process it almost appears to hang and does so without error.  I've attached the logs for review as I've tried everything I can up to this point with no success.  I've done this process with other machines and had no problems.  I've tried the standalone converter 4.3 on the source machine with no luck either.  I'm not sure what else to look for...

Message was edited by: TerryOdom - Good call.  That's what I get for being in a hurry.  Let's try this again

Converting problems with VMWare Converter Standalone 5.5 Error 14 opening disk, OpenDisks failed, mntapi error: 226 - The specified virtual disk needs repair

Hi Cummunity,

it's the first time I need to ask for help with VMWare Products in the last 8 years.

I am migration from VMWorkstation 6.5.1 to ESXi 5.5. Workstation runs under Win XP SP3. There are two VM's to be converted. The first one is an XP SP3 Engine used for Kerio Mailserver (of course, it will me migrated to a newer OS - but as usual there are issues migration Kerio Connect from XP to CentOS - so we need to stay a bit longer with the running system).

The second VM is a MS Server 2008 driving a MS SQL Server.

The conversion of the XP VM was done without any issues. But with the MS Server VM conversion is failing again and again. It fails before entering to ESXi Host IP-Address.

(Please have a look into the attached log file)

Current situation:

VMWare Converter Standalone runs on a Windows 7 System, SP1, 12GB Ram. The MS Server VM have been copied to the local disk. The VM has two virtual disks (SCSI) in separated folders  and is running fine with the VMWorkstation (no log entries found, that there is already something worse).

After several failures I decided to copy everything into one folder and change the vmx conf file (for the second virtual disk I removed only the path, the first one did not have any path in the setup).

Coming from the converter log files, my first guess was that there is not enough space on C on the Windows 7 System left.

First question:

  • Where can I change the temp path the converter is using or does the converter use the system temp path from the profile?

I moved some data from C to a another partion the get more free space (Freespace now 180GB).The VM has two virtual disks: Boot: 45GB persistent, and 24GB persistent.

Second questions:

  • How may free disk space to I need for this converting action?

I started the Converter as Administrator but it fails again with the same error. I step deeper into the log files and found some more error messages e.g. for the GUI itself. For Instance:

Issue with Linux P2V

Hi All,

I am trying to convert a physical Linux machine to our ESX host, on the converter i can connect to the box, set the options including giving the helper VM a static IP as there is not DHCP on the network and i start the convert, when i look at the console on the ESX i can see the machine start to convert, it asks for a username and password to login to the helper which i do (i fixed the converter worker file to allow this) but once it logs in the conversion just sites there at 1% and does nothing else/ is there something i am missing?

Thanks.

Hello,

I've used the VMWare converter standalone on older PC's with out an issue.

When I tried to use this on a Lenovo Laptop running Windows 8.1 I get the following error when I select the destination.

The destination does not support EFI firmware.

I've selected destination type as VMWorkstation or other VMWare virtual machine.

I've selected the VMWare product as VMWare workstation 7.0.x

I'm not sure what I am doing incorrectly.

I've google for this but I don't seem to be getting any further forward with this one.

Can any one help?

Thank you.

Hi,

my problem is to start a converted Windows 2008 r2 Foundation Server in ESXi 6.0

The process of making a VM from the running Windows System works without errors.

Starting the VM works without errors

But when i open a remote console, the console windows remains black. No error, no event information.

I can't find any hint in documentation of this behavior.

I'm using Vmware vCenter Converter Standalone Version: 6.0.0 build-2716716

Hello - during install of standalone converter on a Windows 7 Pro workstation I get the following error; install rolls back, does not complete. What is causing this?

Converter version?

VMware vCenter Converter 3.0.3 Build 89816 is listed in http://www.vmware.com/download/converter/

There is another version of Converter 4.0.2 u3 is listed in the download page under vCenter Server 2.5 update 3.

Are they the same besides the version number? I'm assuming that 4.0.2 is the latest Converter. Thanks.

Error with Dell Factory Boot partition

Hi-

I have a Dell R710 Server running windows 2008 r2 standard. I tried running VCenter converter (P2V) but I received this error:

FAILED: Unable to create a VSS snapshot of the source volume(s). Error code:

My guess is that this has to do with a FAT 32 and OEM partition on the hard drive. Has anyone had any experience with this?

Any reason for painfully slow transfer rates with VMWare Converter?

$

By now I have been through several P2V and one V2V conversion using the VMWare converter 5.0, 5.1 and now 5.5 and all have suffered from very slow transfer rates. On 5.0 and 5.1 I have disabled SSL Encryption and while doing a local P2V from the physical machine or a P2V from a remote machine (all on a Gigabit LAN network) I have seen slow transfer rates of maybe 5 MB/s.

And now doing a V2V using 5.5, I am moving a VM from internal storage onto a SAN, I am seeing average of 2MB/sec transfer rates. This is with SSL enabled. And I am converting a 1.6TB VMDK (windows 2008) that has only 480GB used. For this particular V2V, I had to resize the volume and make it a thin from thick, so I realize a slower file level copy is taking place instead of a block level or volume level. But are these transfer rates "normal"?

Thanks for any and all feedback in advance.

hello everyone,

I'm trying to convert a physical Windows 2008 R2 (SP1) to virtual, using Vmware vCenter Converter Standalone version 5.5 build 1362012, it fails at 1% (after around 40mins) with the following message

FAILED: Unable to create a VSS snapshot of the source volume(s). Error code:

2147754758 (0x80042306).

The windows systems has some LUNS (4 x various GB size each) from the SAN, being GUID Partition Table (GPT).  I went through the wizard typically, selecting  "powered on machine", destination "vmware workstation or other vmware virtual machine" selected vmware player 6.0.x and the target location being a LUN with 500GB space.

Now for data to copy I selected 3 of the LUNS (on which some database is residing) and put "Min size" option (but I have tried maintaining the size for different runs) to save on space.

Looking through the logs, i see the following errors

I wonder if the converter is not able to work on GPT partitions ?  (i think I've seen some community threads about this problem using v.5.1, but using 5.5 should be solved ?)

Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Problem converting a physical Ubuntu 14.04 server

Hi there. Anyone else tried to convert a physical Ubuntu 14.04 installation? For me it fails at grub-version check it seems like.

I also tried it on 12.04 and it works fine. The differense is this:

12.04:

$ grub-install -v

grub-install (GRUB) 1.99-21ubuntu3.14

14.04:

$ grub-install -V

grub-install (GRUB) 2.02~beta2-9

In 14.04 I have to use capital V for version check. Is it possible to change this in the Converter? I'm using Converter version 5.5

The result seems to be that the converter installs the wrong version of grub, or not at all.

NTFS: deleting corrupt attribute record (128, $J)

I'm trying to do a really simple conversion from Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 to ESXi machine version 8. It seems to copy okay, but on the first VM boot it does an NTFS disk check and finds a bunch of errors.

All major services are stopped (APC Powerchute, Windows Deployment Services, Backup Exec Agent) and the antivirus uninstalled. chkdsk has been run on the source hardware and found no problems.

And yet after the migration I see this on first boot:

Checking file system on C:

The type of the file system is NTFS.

One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency. You may cancel the disk check, but it is strongly recommended that you continue.

Windows will now check the disk.

There is absolutely NO WAY that I am going to use this resulting conversion as our primary organization file server. Such corruption of the NTFS partition data is completely unacceptable. I have no way of knowing what "file record 57484 / 57632" are and if they are critical to the operation of the server.

Though I expect I already know what the problem is, and I cannot solve it by using VMWare Converter running on the Windows I'm trying to migrate.

Trying to copy a file system while it is in use is just inviting disaster because as you're copying data, something before or after wherever the copy is occurring may change so that the final copy result ends up being corrupted.

The only way to really prevent this mid-copy data corruption is to copy the partitions when they are not in use.

Converting Windows 98

I have taken a couple of approaches to convert an existing Windows 98 physical machine to run in VMware (I am new to this, BTW).  I first tried converting the machine using the remote option but I got an error when it was attempting to install the agent.  Next I pulled the hard disk from the PC and put it in the same PC that I plan to run the VM on (WinXP Pro).  I used the local machine option and chose the hard disk containing the Windows 98 installation.  But the Wizard balked at not being able to find the OS and continuing led to eventual failure.  Not one to give up, I downloaded and installed Ghost 10 and successfully built an .sv2i image.  However, when I go to build the new vm from this standalone vm using this image I get an error when it tries to detect the operating system (Unable to determine guest operating system) and I cannot continue.

So, I thought Windows 98 was supported in a vm but am I wasting my time in trying to do this?

Thanks

Pete

Cold clone a Windows 2008 R2 machine

Hi,

Is there any way to cold clone Windows 2008 R2 machine? As far as I know there is no vmware 5.1 boot cd for cold cloning. So I've tried to use latest cold clone cd (4.1.1 - 206170). Problem is that it is able to clone my machine BUT it is created as Other-32 bit machine on esxi server and when I'm trying to start this machine this operation simply ends with blue screen. I desperately need to do coldclone and not the hot clone and I need your help. Thanks.
