Converter 5.5.3, ESXI 6.0, P2V.  "An error occurred during the conversion: 'converter.fault.FileIOFault'"

The Job failed at 35%.  When I looked up the error it says that a HD error occurred and that I need to do a defrag.  Before I do this I want to check and make sure that 5.5.3 converter is compatible with ESXi 6.  I can't seem to find anything on this.

This is my environment:

Physical Box: IBM, Intel Dual 8c processors, 16 GB Ram, Raid 10

Virtual environment: (host)Dell r620, Intel Dual 8c processors, 64 GB Ram.  (san) Equallogic 6100, Raid 10

I have to convert one Hyper-V's VM to vSphere, it is a windows server 2008 r2 (both HV and VM) and HV have simple default installation.

First step: with source as  Hyper-V I had got a problem at 1% such "FAILED: An error occured while opening a virtual disk. Verify that the Converter server and the running source machines have a network access to the source and destination ESX/ESXi hosts.". I think it is not commonly problem at HV, because neighboured test VM converted ok, but it is very pure in environment - have no software as MSSQL and big vhd. And I think if I make google-search more then I can resolve problem (or write additionaly here:). Commonly, one thought was that raid-5 was degraded at that moment, and maybe in fast reading via HV it was timeouts, dont know. (I brought disk to raid 5 just yesterday and try again HV convert tonight.)

Second step: with source as physical (yep, why not) it converted ok, despite that I forgot or can't turn off programs/processes to give VM easy way for convert.

And now I have a question:

     Is I should to try convert from HV directly or it enough to do as physical?

     Is a principal difference in resulted VM (more clear virtualization layer or windows in VM) when I do one or enother thing?

Finaly I didnt understand a principal need of HV conversion as it. Except several situations: when we can't run source VM for physical conversion (f.e. havnt free CPU/RAM/etc or it is like archive and not for run to prevent state change); when we need fast conversion (without virtual layer from source VM to HV); and when we want to exclude VM's process works effect.

My converter fails on 3% with the following error

i tried the hostname fix etc but it keeps failing.

Is there any way to convert a windows 95 physical machine to a VM ?

We have a couple of old machines we want to "save"? before the hardware fails....

Hi I was trying to convert local physical Windows xp professional mhn. on the local E drive. and getting this error. space is no problem i have excluded other drives just only talking the backup of C drive and exclude other drives. including system unknown drive.

Trying to install the standalone version of vCenter Converter on a windows xp box.  It starts to go through the setup and then towards the end it gives on error 29190.  Could not generate secure sockets layer (ssl) key.  Any ideas?

I got error "Error: Reconfiguration failed" and conversion aborts at 95% with status "FAILED: A general system error occurred:

InternalError".

Physical machine is Lenovo T60 with OS Windows XP SP2 and Converter is VMware vCenter Converter Standalone Client Version 4.0.1 build-161434

Hi,

I'm attempting to virtualize a SQL database server that has an direct attached array connected to it.  Some of the partitions are stored on this array.  It gets through all of them, but one.  Immediately when it starts to convert that drive, it fails with the error "An error occurred during the conversion: 'Block level cloning does not support shrinking volumes'.  I can't seem to find anything online about the error so I'm wondering if any of you have seen it?

I've set all of the drives to be Thin Provisioned and I leave it at the original size.  The only thing I have done outside of the default is to remove one of the drives from the conversion and set them to thin provision. 

Not sure what info I would need to proved here, so please let me know if you have any questions.

Really going a little desperate here.

I have here 1 Server 2003R2 EN edition running SQL 2005 instance (1 database).

Trying to convert to VM running on ESXi 5.5.0 1623387 using 5.5 standalone converter and also the 5,1 converter.

Hardware raid, normal basic disks (C: 60GB / D: 140GB).

stopped the SQL database, ran as local administrator, used SSL and no-SSL during copy (for speed).

Made sure I had LSI logical controller.

The convertion fails at 98% with "error: Cannot open the destination virtual machine for reconfiguration"

After that I can run the task "reconfiguration" seperately and it will tell me it has succeeded on the VM.

But in both cases I only get a black screen with a solid cursor.

Weird thing is, I dont even get the BIOS when I tell ESXi that I would like to see the BIOS after the next reboot. I go straight to black screen with cursor.

I also tried ONLY converting the C: but that resulted in the same issue,

I dont really know how to read them since I see a lot of "failed" and "error" remarks.

Why the convertion process fails at 96%? I want to convert a notebook with W7 pro, I installed VMware vCenter Converter Standalone on notebook and start the "power on machine" convertion for the local machine, the path destination is an usb external harddisk.

Hi, I have tried to convert a Win7 32 bit desktop several times. It worked once but then I noticed the VMWare tools option so would like to do it again. After 5 tries, it keeps failing at 96% with a message unable to create \\.\vstor2\mntapi and so on. All drives are basic and not dynamic. I have turned off the windows firewall, virus scanner and most services. VMware converter does take around 15 hours to convert 350GB. It worked fine on the laptop after around 5 tries.

If I can get this to work, I will definitely upgrade to Fusion 7. Thanks.

I just need to make sure I understand something. I need to move a VMware esxi 5.5 virtual machine to another server. I am trying to do it with minimal downtime and lost of information. I am trying to run the converter hot as a local machine conversion to the new server. The problem is that the conversion takes about 10hrs. I don't want to loose that much data. I noticed there is an option to Synchronize changes immediately after cloning. This only takes about 5 minutes. I am assuming that this is just copying the changes since the conversion started (10 hours worth). Is this accurate? If so, I would only risk loosing 5 minutes, not 10 hrs. Any help or explanation would be appreciated.

So again; same problem others have encountered but nothing seems to work.

I'm trying to convert a Acronis tib file over to a virtual machine. When I select the tib file it won't except it! It tells me the parameters are not correct. Can any one help with resolving this issue? I 'm using VMware Converter stand alone and have a backup copy from Acronis of Vista 32 in the form of a .tib.

I'm trying to convert a Physical Windows 2000 (SP4 installed) to a Virutal Machine.

All the process is correct until at 95% of conversion it displays some errors. I attach the logs for more information.

I'm using VMware-converter-4.0.1-161434 version, running from destination host.

Can anyone help me? I don't really understand why is not working.

the old issue about geting Error 29163 during the installation has never been answered.

I keep getting "Error 29163. Could not copy file c:\windows\temp\converter-agent.xml.", and the installation process is rolled back.

My pcis a freshly installed Win7 64bit, and I'm trying to install latest vwersion of Converter (VMware-converter-en-6.0.0-2716716.exe) in standalone mode.

Does anyone have any idea?

I am having some problems with my Windows 10 VM.  I'm trying to expand the size of the VM but can't because of a weird partition from the Boot Camp conversion I had on my Mac.  For more details on that, you can see this post in the Fusion forum:

Virtual disk size incorrect

They suggested using VMWare VCenter Converter Standalone and deselect that partition when doing so.  Everything seems to work fine until the end when I get this error:

A general system error has occurred: unknown internal error.

I've attached a screenshot showing the partitions I can choose to convert as well as some diagnostic logs.  Can anyone help me figure out how to get this working?
