How to migrate Oracle VM with RHEL 5.8 guest OS to Vmware Esx using P2V

$

Hi,

I'm trying to convert an oracle vm (3.2.7) server to VMware Esx.  The guest operating system of this virtual machine is RHEL 5.8. I'm using P2V to do this conversion. When I migrate an oracle virtual machine with RHEL 6.3 as guest operating system, using also P2V, the process ends successfully, but with RHEL 5.8 I'm getting the following error:

"An error occurred during the conversion :'InitrdNativePatcher failed to generate initrd image: /usr/lib/VMware-converter/initrdGenRhel.sh failed with return code: 1

..

..

ERROR: failed running mkinitrd /boot/initrd-2.6.18-308.el5.img 2.6.18-308.el5 with chroot /mnt/p2v-src-root "

I tried before without success :

- Convert the oracle vm machine from PVm to HVM

- Install also the standard kernel in the machine

Maybe some of you have had this error in the past, and can give me some advice , thanks a lot!!!

Regards,

Paola

Hello,

I have a physical Debian 7.0 Linux system which I am trying to P2V using Converter 5.5.3.  When I select my target ESXi server, I get told:

The destination does not support EFI firmware.

How do I confirm/deny this, and/or enable EFI support on my ESXi node?

While converting a vmc file VMWare Converter: (A file I/O error occurred while accesssing ". )

I have an old vmc file that fine for years with Microsofts VirtualPC. I just converted to Windows 10 and I found out that vmc are no longer supported.

I was hoping VMware had something to convert/run vmcs, so I downloaded VMWare Converter and pointed the wizard to my vmc file and within a few seconds I get a "A file I/O error occurred while accesssing ". error.  The file is a local file and I'm running this in Windows 10 64-bit. I tried to convert some previous backup vmc files and they all give the same error at the same point. I don't think the vmc files are corrupted as they were working a few weeks ago.

Use Converter for automated P2V conversions?

$

Hello all! This is my first post - I created account to ask this Q.

Is it possible to automate P2V process using VmVare converter?

The idea is to use VmWare Converter as a contingency. I would have it create immediately runnable virtual machine, in case hardware disaster occurs (RAID field dies, etc.)

I was looking at the program itself, but it seems it lacks command line options. - I did noticed, however, that it has different mode of operation: client-server one.

Can someone help in regard to this Q?

Thank you.

Convert Physical Machine to VM Image on USB drive

$

Hi guys and gals,

We have a physical machine that runs some software the company needs 24/7 and we need to make a backup from. It is on dated hardware and if it ever dies we'll need the ability to run it as a VM temporarily until a replacement box arrives and be set up.

I need to make a VMWare ESXi 5.5 compatible image of the physical machine, but save it direct onto a network share or USB drive for storage. I don't see a way of doing this without involving the ESXi server which I've been asked to avoid by superiors. This is essentially a short term disaster recovery scenario for when we need the image, just in case.

Can this be done?

Cheers.

No Keyboard or Mouse after P2V

I used P2V to transfer a 2003 Windows server to a virtual machine.  It works and will boot up but I can't interact with it at all.  Sending a ctrl-alt-del from the VM menu does nothing.  The mouse and keyboard will not work either.  I have tried this in VMWare server and workstation.  I can't get into bios to check settings because the keyboard will not interact with the machine.  HELP!

Last night we rebuilt our lab environment and installed ESX 4.1.   We also downloaded VMware-Converter-All-4.3.0.   We built a couple of VM's and wanted to create some OVA files as backup.  However, it seems this version of Converter does not allow convering a VM to  OVA file.  Am I missing something??

Thanks!

Hi,

I try to convert a Linux (Ubuntu 14.04) host to p2v but I have a little problem to make it work.

Here the custom setting I made on the host:

-     Edit /etc/sudoers and add my user like this => username ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD: ALL

Here the setting I made on my Windows 7 who start the Vmware Converter Standalone 5.5.3:

-     Edit converter-agent.xml and converter-worker.xml

-     Change the "useSudo" flag from "false" to "true" (in each file)

-     Restart the Vmware Converter Standalone Services.

Here a part of the log where is the error:

Hello,

I'm trying to p2v a redhat in a HP BL460c with the new converter 4 standalone.

I give an error "Unable to connect to the Converter helper server on the target virtual machine". And the Status on the "task progress" tab is "FAILED. Failed to communicate with the remote host, either due to network errors or because the host is not responding".

I'll found this error in documentation & forums, but I have no luck, maybe someone can help me with this issue. I attach the log files.

Thanks a lot.

How to covert V to V

Hi All,

I want to perform a virtual to virtual machine conversion task.

I have a virtual machine which is up and running in one data center, i require the

same virtual machine in the other data center.

As i can not migrate or Clone a vm from one DC to other.

I will have to go for virtual to virtual machine conversion.

Please give me the steps to be followed to perform v to v conversion.

I hope in V to V conversion the configuration files will be copied from one datacenter

to other data center over the network...Is this understanding correct?

Also how about the data of the VM,Will i be able to get the same data on the

VM as it was on parent datacenter after v to v.

What will be approximate time to convert if VM Holds data of 80GB.

Please let me know the steps..Thanks in advance.

Can converter standalone convert live physical FreeBSD to VM or does converter support FreeBSD live conversions?

When I try to convert a physical system to virtual, using coverter standalone 4.0.0 build 146302, I received:  "unable to query the live linux source machine".

I have verified that the system had ssh access from the converter machine to the physical system (tested using putty, telnet...etc).  I had also followed and verified that the following applied: http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1009153

The system type that I am trying to convert shows a uname -a output of (just in case, a.b.c.com is not the hostname):

At this point I reviewed the log file from the converter standalone utility, File=>Export Logs, and reviewed the messages - which showed that the tool was able to transfer the vmware-sysinfo-lin32.tar.gz, and untar the file, but when it came to execute the file  vmware-sysinfo-lin32 it failed, generating the error:

Files\VMware\VMware vCenter Converter Standalone\plink.exe -noprompt -stdin -nokeycheck -P 22 root@a.b.c.com cd /tmp/.vmware-sysinfo-lbeqhrjnubyvydne/; ./vmware-sysinfo-lin32.sh" received error code (2) with result: ./vmware-sysinfo-lin32: 1: Syntax error: "(" unexpected

So I ran all the steps shown under the log by hand, and finally I tried running ./vmware-sysinfo-lin32 (there is also a ./vmware-sysinfo-lin32.sh - which ensures that all the libraries provided by the tar will be available), I get the error:

# ./vmware-sysinfo-lin32
ELF binary type "0" not known.
-bash: ./vmware-sysinfo-lin32: cannot execute binary file

Well the bottom line is that the binary is compiled for Linux Operating Systems, if I run a "file" command against the provided binary:

# file /vmware-sysinfo-lin32

vmware-sysinfo-lin32: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, version 1 (SYSV), for GNU/Linux 2.2.5, dynamically linked (uses shared libs), stripped

I see the output SYSV, which I am not sure to what level of compatibility is there for FreeBSD systems, if I compare this output with one generated by a binary file compiled for FreeBSD, I attain:
# file wget
baba: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, version 1 (FreeBSD), dynamically linked (uses shared libs), stripped

I think the issue here may be that it is a FreeBSD system and VMWare has no support for converting FreeBSD systems live? or perhaps VMWare doesn't have support for FreeBSD conversions in general?

I know on the GUI it does not mention FreeBSD but only Linux, but I was hoping that FreeBSD was a given.

So at this point my questions are: how do I convert "live" FreeBSD systems to VM?  What tools can I use?  Is there a way to install the converter helper by hand, one that works for FreeBSD?  What steps can I take?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

HI, I am trying P2V a windows 7 64 bit machine, I have cleaned everthing out of the registry and it still insists that I have a previous version and wont install the agent. I have a dual boot with Ubuntu and I tried to clone the disk from the Linux side and it states that it cant recognixe the version of the VCenter server. If somebody can answer either of these question I would be very grateful.

thanks

P2V Conversion for SUSE Linux fails - via vCenter

Dear All,

I am looking for some information if there is any specific configuration needs to be done if I have to do P2V conversion via the vCenter ?

We have been facing issues for SUSE Linux physical machines when we use the standalone converter and specify vCenter as the destination. The conversions have been successful when we choose the ESX server as destination.Conversion job for same ESX as destination fails when its added to the vCenter Server.

We are wondering why its failing if we add the same ESXi 5 host in to vCenter 5 and while choosing destination we specify the vCenter ip (then next step the host ip).On both cases the converter is able to identify the source and destination, can customize the source server h/w config ..but the conversion fails showing network related error.

Please suggest if there is any specific config needs to be done for vCenter

Unable to obtain hardware information for the selected machine - Standalone Converter 5.1

vCenter: 5.1.0

Standalone Converter: 5.1.0

ESXi : 5.1

I am unable to complete any P2V conversions with vCenter Standalone Converter. I get the error message "Unable to obtain hardware information for the selected machine" every time I run the converter. I have used 'Run as Administrator,' rebooted source system, and rebooted vCenter server with no luck. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
