Hi - when using VMware Converter what is the reason for creating 1 vmdk file when doing a P2V of a server that has 2 disks? Why doesn't it create two vmdk files?
Do most people just run the converter several times selecting 1 disk at a time??
When I select the C: and D: volumes of the server and resize them - instead of creating 2x15GB vmdk's it creates a 30GB vmdk.
What's best??
I am need to P2V our linux box that we have, I was able to connect and the P2V process was successful. When I start the VM up I get the following error message:
* Mounting /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 on /sysroot
mount: mounting /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 on /sysroot failed: No such file or directory
mount: mounting /dev on /sysroot/dev failed: No such file or directory
* Switing / to /sysroot
switch_root: bad newroot /sysroot
Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!
I have read some forum posts on this being an issue with the LVM but I am not sure what I need to do to fix this. If anyone knows what the issue is I would greatly appreciate the assistance.

I want to convert our physical Windows Server 2008 machine into a virtual one on our ESX5. I Installed the Converter 4.3 as standalone client on the system which i would convert and started the wizard. After pushing the button "end" to start the conversion (it's a German version, so I don't know how the button is labeld in English exactly) the wizzard stops with the message, that there is a general system failure: invalid fault.
The vSphere Client shows the issue that (free translation from german) the machine or the process on index'5' doesn't support the actual version 'vmx-4' of the virtual machine. To execute the process version 'vmx-07' is required.
Original German text in the vSphere Client:
"Das Gerät oder der Vorgang, angegeben bei Index '5', wird für die aktuelle Version 'vmx-04' der virtuellen Maschine nicht unterstützt. Zur Ausführung dieses Vorgangs ist mindestens Version 'vmx-07' erforderlich."
But I have choosen within the converter wizzard the VM-version 8. I could choose between 7 and 8, but also with 7 the conversion doesn't begin.

I'm trying to convert a .tib into a virtual machine using the standalone converter on my laptop.
I made the acronis true image 11 (home) image last night of a windows 2000 server drive.
I load the .tib file in the convert machine screen using the 3rd party image option, when I hit next I get an error saying the source parameters are invalid.
I'm running the converter on a windows 7 machine.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I get 97% then it fails. I am converting Ubuntu 9.10 server. I will attach the logs. "GrubInstaller::InstallGrub: /usr/lib/vmware-converter/installGrub.sh failed with return code: 127, and message:
/vmware-updateGrub.sh: 38: grub: not found

Error running vmware-updateGrub.sh through chroot into /mnt/p2v-src-root
10/22/09 found out Ubuntu 9.10 uses Grub2 is this the issue and can it work with Grub2?

I'm running Converter Standalone version 5.1.0 and am attempting to P2V a physical Centos 5.3 server to my vSphere 5.1 environment. When the conversion job kicks-off, the helper VM is created, it powers on and boots up ok, the job log says "Connected to the Converter helper server on the destination virtual machine" and then the helper VM powers off and deletes and the job fails with the message "Failed at 1%. A general system error has occurred: Network error. Host <hostname of source machine> key can't be retrieved (return code 2)".
I am able to SSH to the server and login as root without a problem. When Converter initially connects to the machine when I'm setting up the job, it retrieves all it's details OK and shows me all its configuration information OK etc. I'm thinking that the "key can't be retrieved" in the failure message is the clue, but I don't know what "key can't be retrieved" means.

I have an image of a server taken from Acronis trueimage, and I thought I could use COnverter on the *.tib on the file, and rip a VM of the image?
Am I even on this planet with this notion? I am thinking No, but still ni solar system. Please let me know if you have any clue whether this is possible.
I have seen previous posts on this and have tried to follow all of the suggestions but nothing is helping. I am running XP and have two hard drives, both NTFS and both have plenty of room. My destination is an external hard drive, FAT32, also with plenty of room. I am getting the message ERROR: Failed to take snapshot of a source volume. Possible causes include not having any NTFS volumes on Windows XP or Windows 2003 source systems, and not having enough free disk space.
I installed the converter as an administrator, I have rebooted multiple times, I ran checkdsk /f on both hard drives and the external drives, I have turned off all of the services that I am comfortable turning off, but I just keep getting this message. I've attached the log file.

the issue I am having is this

I am not able to find something in the logs, any help please I am attaching the logs.
I've already tried usin another LSI Bus and LSI Logic Controller and same issue

when we try to install (as administrator) the actual converter on our windows 2003 std. 32 bit server (domain controller, 1 nic, fully ms patched) we always receive the following error:
Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Error: program: ... vmware vcenter converter\vmware-converter.exe. The application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusal way.
The eventlog says:
Product: VMware vCenter Converter Standalone -- Error 1920.Service VMware vCenter Converter Server (vmware-converter-server) failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services.
We have tried to change temp / tmp enviroment, older converter versions, different installation path, changed service account, deleted tmp / registry entries ... Nothing helps !
Anyone got a solution for that ?

After converting Server 2008 I receive "BOOTMGR missing press any key to restart" When attempting to start the VM. I have attempted numerous disk configurations during the conversion process, always with the same result. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. This is from a thread started under the beta process. Which can be viewed here BOORMGR missing . I believe this has been duplicated at vmware and may be fixed in the next release. I was wondering if there was a workaround?

I've downloaded and Installed Voncerter Standalone Client 4.0.0 on a Windows 2003 Machine.
I tried to convert a physical RedHat 5 Machine into an virtual Machine (esx Server 3.5).
The following error occured at 3%:
Error: Failed to clone the volume mounted on '/boot' from 'machinename'.
does anyone know what to do here?
(I didn't make any further configurations except those which are offered in the wizard)

I'm trying to hot clone P2V a Linux server and on the very last step when I click "finish" I'm getting an error:

FAILED: The VSS snapshots cannot be stored because there is not enough space on the source volumes or because the source machine does not have any NTFS volumes. Error code: 2147754783 (0x8004231F).
I have windows 7 Pro with SSD.
Used space: 16 GB
Free space: 39.7GB
any idea how to solve this issue?

Is there any way to cold clone Windows 2008 R2 machine? As far as I know there is no vmware 5.1 boot cd for cold cloning. So I've tried to use latest cold clone cd (4.1.1 - 206170). Problem is that it is able to clone my machine BUT it is created as Other-32 bit machine on esxi server and when I'm trying to start this machine this operation simply ends with blue screen. I desperately need to do coldclone and not the hot clone and I need your help. Thanks.
I have taken a couple of approaches to convert an existing Windows 98 physical machine to run in VMware (I am new to this, BTW). I first tried converting the machine using the remote option but I got an error when it was attempting to install the agent. Next I pulled the hard disk from the PC and put it in the same PC that I plan to run the VM on (WinXP Pro). I used the local machine option and chose the hard disk containing the Windows 98 installation. But the Wizard balked at not being able to find the OS and continuing led to eventual failure. Not one to give up, I downloaded and installed Ghost 10 and successfully built an .sv2i image. However, when I go to build the new vm from this standalone vm using this image I get an error when it tries to detect the operating system (Unable to determine guest operating system) and I cannot continue.
So, I thought Windows 98 was supported in a vm but am I wasting my time in trying to do this?
