A file I/O error occurred while accessing *

I have just installed Converter 5.0 client/server on both a Win2008R2 server and a Win6x64 laptop, both are part of a local domain.  I am trying to do a p2v of the server and save it as a vmplayer 4 file to an external hd.  I have run the wizzard multiple times, both from the server and remotely on the laptop.  Each time I get through configuring the wizzard without incident but when I click on finish I get an error, A file I/O error occurred while accessing '\\Server\H\Server.domain.com\server.domain.com.vmdk', path obviously changes depending on where I am saving it to but the rest of the error is the same.  I have tried using different external hd's on both the server and the laptop, saving to the server's internal hd and saving to another file server on the network.  Regardless of where I save the file to I get the exact same error.  I have the log file if that would help.

Hi all,

This ones got me a little stumped, hoping someone has some more experience.

Source windows 2012 64bit (fresh deployment, test server for newbies in team)

Converter version 6

ESX 5.5

I start conversion and fails at 3%~ with error.

BlockLevelVolumeCloneMgr::CloneVolume: Detected a write error during the cloning of volume \WindowsBitmapDriverVolumeId=[93-DD-5B-0B-00-00-10-00-00-00-00-00]. Error: 37409 (type: 1, code:2338)'

In worker logs all i can see is after the Worker InitialSyncFullCloneTask updates, state: 4, percentage: 3, xfer rate (Bps): 47285248 rows is as follows, no other errors - it just ends....

There are no other errors in the worker log to give any clues, so far i have tried the following

Actions

  • Rerun job a couple more times - failed
  • Convert only C:\ - failed
  • Run Check disk /R on C:\ - failed

Points to consider.

  • Next step would be to install converter locally but i want to avoid this for now.
  • No workarounds to be deployed, i.e. use acronis - must be able to proceed with converter alone
  • Normally a checkdisk resolves this issue for me.

Login to server failed due to incorrect credentials

I'm a new user of VCSC. I just installed VCSC in order to import a windows XP virtual PC image into vmware player. A screen capture of the error is attached.

The PC is a stand-alone laptop running windows 7 professional. I use it for for running some legacy applications. There is no domain controller. The account on the laptop did not have a password at the time that I installed VCSC. When I attempted to import the Windows XP Virtual PC image, the error appeared. I thought it may have been because there was no password on the account, so I added one. That made no difference. I did a repair on the VCSC installation to see if that would cause the credentials to be changed. That also made no difference.

The name of the laptop is LATITUDED830 and the account name is Daryl, corresponding to the credentials in the screen capture.

I'm stuck. I have no idea how to get past this error. I'd appreciate some help.

"Operating System not found" after conversion using Vmware Converter 3

Looking for some help...

The server is an HP ML350 - about 3 years old. I ran the converter against it and the job completed without errors. However, I am unable to boot the server. I get an "Operating System Not Found" error. I already tried the following:

1. Mounted the vmdk as a secondary disk on another VM

2. modified the boot.ini

3. checked that the disk was marked active

4. changed the disk from BUSLOGIC to LSI

5. Tried running Windows Recovery with FIXBOOT, FIXMBR

I'm all out of options.

any ideas??

Scenario : Will This Work

Will This Work :- P2V of Windows NT4.0 SP6a

1,Create an NT4.0 SP6a Server with VMware Converter 3.0.x Enterprise installed.

2,Start the conversion steps using VMware Converter 3.0.x Enterprise, install the agent on the remote NT4.0 SP6a when asked.

3,Perform a live conversion of the NT4.0 SP6a Physical Server Box.

Does VMware Converter 3.0.x Enterprise do NT4.0 Server live conversions, as the documentations seems to suggest "YES"

How to Convert from Hyper-V to VMware

$
0
0

I had to figure this out so I thought I'd post my documentation here for others.  I hope it helps someone!

-

To migrate a Hyper-V Virtual Machine to a VMWare cluster:

You have two choices.  You can use a converter tool to convert the hard

disk while the VM is down, or you can hot clone the VM while it's running.  If

you aren't resizing the hard disk, the hot clone seems to work quickly and

well.

*Confirm that the VM is working correctly as is BEFORE you move it,

so if it doesn't work after the move you know it was the move and not some

preexisting condition.*

To hot clone:

- make sure the Hyper-V VM has no snapshots. When you delete them, make

sure you've given Hyper-V enough time to roll them all up.  You can check this

by looking at the hard drive location in Settings.  It shouldn't be in the

Snapshots folder.  However, you may have to hit Refresh to get this updated

correctly.

*YOU MUST UNINSTALLTHE HYPER-V Integration Tools before moving the

VM in order to CLEANLY uninstall them.*

*But when you remove them, you will no longer have network access,

so you have to shut down the OS, add a "legacy network adapter" first in

Hyper-V, delete the old adapter, edit the new adapter ethernet address to match

the old, and then you will be able to access the network to do the hot

clone.*

Windows 2003 server and older:

Note the IP settings in the Network connection.

Shut down.

Add a legacy network adapter in settings.

Ensure it's connected with the

correct EA.

Delete the old network adapter.

Boot.

Insert the integration services setup disk.

From the command prompt (run

as admin in W2K8) run:d:\support\x86\setup /uninstall

It may give an "access denied" error when it's done, but it always does.

*ENSURE that you REMOVE the Integration Services virtual setup disk

after uninstalling the services, or it may autoinstall them again on

reboot.*

Reboot the server.

- stop all services that might result in clients connecting while you're

doing the clone, such as SQL server, web sites, etc.

Proceed with hot clone process as below.

Windows 2008 server:

Note the IP settings in the Network connection.

Shut down.

Add a legacy network adapter in settings.  Ensure it's connected with the

correct EA.

Delete the old network adapter.

Boot.

Insert the integration services setup disk.  From the command prompt (run

as admin) run:d:\support\x86\setup /uninstall

It may give an "access denied" error when it's done, but it always does.

Leave the server up. 2008 will autoreinstall the Hyper-v integration tools

on reboot, so DO NOT REBOOT. - stop all services that might result in clients connecting while you're

doing the clone, such as SQL server, web sites, etc.

Proceed with hot clone process as below. If hot clone doesn't work from the VSphere client, install the VMware

conversion standalone version on the VM and push the clone up to the server

instead.

Hot clone process:

- Use the vSphere client to connect to your VMWare manager server with an account

that has Admin privs.

(Before you do the next step, you will have to install the vCenter

Converter plugin for your vSphere Client.  Just do that from the Plug-ins

Manager. Then restart vSphere Client..)

- Select the cluster from the Hosts and Clusters view.   Right click and

select Import Machine.- NOTE that the Hyper-V VM must be up and running and on the network for

this to work.

- type to import is "Physical Computer".  Yeah I know. Ssssh don't tell

vSphere.

- enter the full name, and username/pass of an admin on that computer- it will install a client on the server. I usually choose to uninstall it

afterwards.- You will have to choose the server the VM will start out on.  Don't worry,

it can move around afterward, this is just for the cloning.- Choose a Storage repository.

- you can choose to resize the disk, but be aware this will vastly increase

the time required to clone the VM.  Vastly.

- Once the VM is imported, BE SURE TO go shut down the original VM, and edit

the settings of the new VM to modify the Ethernet Address and add a CD ROM

Drive.  For some reason it doesn't seem to add the CD ROM drive.

- start up the new VM.

- install VMWare Tools and reboot.

That's it!

You can import more than one VM at a time, but watch the

network usage.

Troubleshooting:

- if you get an error when installing the VCenter Converter Agent, go to

the Hyper-V VM and redo the uninstall of the Hyper-V stuff, then reboot.

Sometimes it doesn't uninstall cleanly.

To cold clone:

You can use the Starwind Converter tool to convert the VHD disk to VMDK.

Then use the Veeam tool fastscp to copy it up to the storage on the VMware

cluster.

NOTES: Fastscp is flaky on 64-bit systems, as they admit in their release

notes in version 3.

IF YOU ARE COPYING UP AN IDE DRIVE: The vmdk file that contains the disk

descriptor info (the smaller file of the two, without "flat" in the name) needs

to have the line

ddb.adapterType = "ide"

So that VMWare will allow you to add it as an IDE disk.  If you add it as a

SCSI disk, it will probably bluescreen on boot.

To edit the vmdk file, use fastscp to view the file and right click it and

choose edit.

If you have a VM with two disks and you've already added them to the VM, you

may have to remove them both, add the boot drive as IDE, boot up, shut down,

then add the second drive as SCSI or IDE.

Migration of VM from 2.x to 3.x by using VM converter

Hi

Has anyone successfully used VMconverter to migrate a VM fron ESX 2.x to 3x?? After the conversion, do I need to do "upgrade hardware" as what I did with "cold migration" or "clone"??

What extra step do I need to do after the conversion and what should I be watching out??

Thanks for any input.

Converter 5.0 error: "Crypto exception: error:02001005"

$

I'm trying to convert a running physical Windows Server 2003 machine using Converter 5.0. The target is a VMware Server 2.x box.

When I launch the wizard and enter credentials for the powered-on machine, I'm using its IP address and an account in its domain (IT). The VMware Server machine is in a different domain and forest.

After I put in the credentials, I get the following error:

A general system error occurred: Crypto Exception: error:02001005:system library:fopen:Input/output error:unable to load C:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware vCenter Converter Standalone\ssl\rui.crt

Here's what I've tried so far:

1. Verified that the target rui.crt file exists at the specified path and that the domain account I'm using to run the converter has full access to it.

2. Running the converter using the Windows 2003 "Run As" command, specifying the domain admin account I'm currently logged in with and unchecking "Run this program with restricted access"

3. Running with "Run As" using a different domain admin account

4. Removing and reinstalling the converter

The conversion starts normally if I run the client from the machine hosting VMware Server and let it connect to the agent on the source machine, but I'd like to know why the client fails when run directly on the source, as I have several of these machines to convert. Any suggestions would be welcome.

How to covert V to V

Hi All,

I want to perform a virtual to virtual machine conversion task.

I have a virtual machine which is up and running in one data center, i require the

same virtual machine in the other data center.

As i can not migrate or Clone a vm from one DC to other.

I will have to go for virtual to virtual machine conversion.

Please give me the steps to be followed to perform v to v conversion.

I hope in V to V conversion the configuration files will be copied from one datacenter

to other data center over the network...Is this understanding correct?

Also how about the data of the VM,Will i be able to get the same data on the

VM as it was on parent datacenter after v to v.

What will be approximate time to convert if VM Holds data of 80GB.

Please let me know the steps..Thanks in advance.

Can't convert Server 2008 R2 Machine getting error: The VSS snapshots cannot be stored because there is not enough space on the source volumes or because the source machine does not have any NTFS volumes. Error code: 2147754783 (0x8004231F).

I have a couple of Server 08 R2 machines where the P to V conversion fails.  I did some digging and the problem appears to be related to the 100mb System Reserved Partition that has 0% free space available.  Conversion fails with the below error.

The VSS snapshots cannot be stored because there is not enough space on the source volumes or because the source machine does not have any NTFS volumes. Error code:
2147754783 (0x8004231F).

Has anyone had this issue and came up with a solution or work around?

Thanks in advance

P2V with Converter standalone 5.5 - Permission to perform this operation denied

Hi,

Im atempting to perform a P2V and stall at the Source System section with "permission to perform this operation was denied" (screen shot attatched as 1.jpg - Note, i blanked out part of the acocunt name with ***)

I've had a dig around the forums and seen similar V2V issues where vCenter permissions were not high enough - not an issue here as it's a P2V and I havent got to destination credentials as yet,

I've also seen mention of local admin rights required on source server. I've done this. The account i'm using is a domain admin and although domain admins are part of the local administrators permissions group i've also added my comain account to the source servers Administrators group too.

I've also started the application with "run as Administrator" when logged in with my domain admin account and when logged in with local Administrator account.

now for some logs:

I see in the log "2014-01-30T10:10:04.304+11:00 [01688 info 'Libs'] [ADS] Account muz_***_a found, but not local"

but it is part of the local Administrators group. I've added it to both the source physical server (evlp2v102) and the VM that is set up as the converter server (evlp2v001vs)

any help or sugestions appreciated

Also worth noting that is i use the loval Administrator credentials i can get past this.

However, I am atempting to use the Domain credentials as part of troubleshooting/testing with another P2V issue

when when a a domain member physical server is p2v, the virtual instance is not longer a valid domain member (ie: can not log into that VM with domain credentials)

P2V Linux secured with privatekey and passphrase

$

Hello,

I am attempting to P2V a Linux server using the VMWare Standalore Converter v6.

The Linux server is a DMZ server secured with PrivateKey and passphrase. The SSH is listening on port 33001 instead of 22.

Few things to mention about the environment is that,

  • the physical linux server is in DMZ subnet 172.16.0.x. with port 33001 opened to it for ssh.
  • Converter is ran from a Windows server in a 10.1.106.x subnet using privatekey and passphrase.
  • vCenter is on 10.1.109.x subnet.
  • VM is being created on the 10.1.105.x subnet

When I stat the P2V, it proceeds with the initial VM creation in VMWare and loads the temp OS. The job fails at 3% with the below error in the log file:

It seems to me that after the helperVM OS is loaded it is trying to access the source server and fails as the HelperVM doesn't have the private key or passphrase.

I did come across linux p2v conversion with wmware converter 6.1.1 where the user disabled the private key and switched to user name and password authentication. However, I wanted to know if its possible to P2V with PrivateKey and passphrase.

Any help will be much appreciated.

Kind regards,

mjt.
