Converter 5.5 - an error occurred while opening a virtual disk.

Verify that the converter server and the running source machines have a network access to the source and destination esx hosts.

Source is 3.0.2, dest is Dell preinstall 6.5 7388607. (single host on each side)

Have tried both remote and local converter installs on virtual servers. Both fail with the same error. Tried host to host (no vCenter,) then installed a vCenter to try the thumbprint fix, no change. Installed an esx5 host (vm) running on the 6.5 box and it works fine. Tried to v2v using 5.5, 6, and 6.2, with and without ssl (worker and server), from 5 to 6.5 with the same error.

Attached are logs. I saw the reservation message but no reservations exist.

"a component of the virtual machine is not accessible on the host"

Hello,

I am testing the converter standalone with some VMs after some changes in my configuration.

I have a two hosts cluster with HA and DRS and some simple VMs inside (all Ubuntu, 20 to 40GB disks, 1 to 4 vcpus, 2 to 4GB RAM).

I power off one of them, put it through the converter to a Workstation directory on the PC where the converter is installed.

I now want to get it back, I use the converter from Workstation to VMware infrastructure virtual machine and I get the message : "a component of the virtual machine is not accessible on the host".

All the same with other VMs.

I don't understand what is happening. Some blogs write about a CD ROM still connected to an ISO but it is not the case here.

Another gave a possible tip towards the fact it is a cluster but VMware does not confirm it when I look for some KB or official explanation. The cluster and some pool resources are the only changes made since the last time I converted a VM in the same way.

Is someone able to explain it, please ?

Windows Conversion Fails on v6 but works on v5

I have been working on this for a while trying to figure out why any Windows system would fail being converted to an ESXi server. I tried different PC's, different ESXi servers with different versions of ESXi and they all failed. The one thing I didn't change was using an older version of the converter. I was using version 6.1.1 on all of the different PC's.

Today I uninstalled version 6 and installed version 5.5.3 of the converter and it works.

Version 6 would convert a Linux server without an issue it was just any type of Windows system. The converter would get up to 98% and then the bar would go back to 3% to 6% and fail. The logs showed a network error which I know wasn't correct because I could convert a Linux server.

I am attaching the logs from the failed v6 and the working v6. Maybe someone can see something I am missing.

Fail to convert P2V at 3% with error. Host key can't be retrieved

The physical computer which I am trying to convert to a VM:

CentOS 6.6 running FreePBX 10.66-22

Destination ESXi host running: ESXi 5.5.0 6480324.

The middle man computer which running: VMware vCenter Converter Standalone 6.0.0

All of the 3 computers are on the same network without any firewall restriction.

From the vCenter server managing the ESXi host I can see the VM was created, powered on and booted to the VMware converter helper. However, it stuck at the screen. And it then fail!

From the middle man computer I see the error "A general system error occurred: Network error. Host 1x.2x.x.201 key can't be retrieved."

I already tried the VMware vCenter Converter Standalone 6.2.0. But it too ran into the same issue.

The below article advised to use the VMware vCenter Converter Standalone 5.1.0. However, this version is no longer available for download.

VMware Knowledge Base

The more interesting thing is just about 6-7 months ago I was able to convert the same machine onto the same server over the same network!

Could someone please help?

Unable to convert SLES 11 from physical to virtual

Hi!

SLES 11 on VMware Virtual Platform. Trying to convert it to ESX 5.1. First tried to use Converter 5.5, but … got error “FAILED: A general system error occurred: Network error.
Host ... key can't be retrieved. (return code 2)”. On SLES nothing added to hosts.allow nor hosts.deny. SSHD is running I’m able to use NX for remote connection to this server. Well, thought maybe something with RSA key and Converter 5.5 (find out via Google). Tried Converter 4.3, but … “unable to clone the volume mounted on ‘/boot’”. Here I am! Any ideas? Probably I’m doing something wrong.

More thanks, Alar.

Hi

Im trying to migrate a VM using Converter 5.1 but I get the "Permission to perform this operation was denied" error message when i select the source machine (which is powered off) or when i click on the "view source details..."

I see the following error in the Convertor Standalone client log file "[05496 error 'wizardController'] Must be administrator to access physical computer"

The domain account I am using is a member of the Local Users group on the Convertor server and has Converter permissions on the source vCenter where the VM is.

Any ideas as to why I get this error?

How can I uninstall the vCenter Standalone Converter?

My vCenter Standalone Converter 5.5 installation is corrupted on a Windows Server 2012 R2 server.  Using the typical uninstall procedure through the Control Panel results in a "Could not stop service" message.  This is the message I receive regardless of whether I try to uninstall, repair, or reinstall the application.  Can someone direct me to a list of the various files and registry entries that need to be deleted to effectively remove the application to the point where I can reinstall it again?  Thanks.

Hello together,

I try to convert a physical Maschine into a VM with VMware vCenrter Converter 6.22.

I have created a shared folder with full access for:

everybody

(actual user name)

___VMware_conf_sa___

administrators.

The conversion starts and I can see, that the converter creates a Folder, which contains:

- VDMK-File

- VMX-File

a Folder with the Ending: .vmdk.lck

In this folder 2 Files with the name Mxxxxx.lck (xxxxx = Numbers).

So it looks at the beginning OK. But after ~30 seconds (1%) I get the message "FAILED: Unable to obtain the lock on virtual disks.".

I have googled but I can't find a helpful thread! Can somebody support me please?

Greetings

Peter

I'm trying to convert a RHEL4 server and am getting 'Unable to query the live linux source machine' after I push Next on the credentials screen.

Mouse pointer jumping to the upper left corner (VMware Tools issue?)

I am not sure this is the right forum for my question.

After converting (P2V) some Windows servers I see the VM work for a short time (hours).

With no apparent reason I lose the control of the mouse, and the pointer jumps to the upper left corner of the screen.

I can move it around the screen but when I click the mouse the pointer jumps again to the upper left corner.

I can perform limited actions only using the old keyboard based functions.

I suspect the problem is related to VMware Tools, but reinstalling them does not solve the problem.
Have anybody faced similar problems?

Is there any document about thist strange behavior?

marius

Vmacore::TimeoutException(Operation timed out)

I am trying to convert a Windows 7 machine with 4GB into a VM using VMware vCenter Converter standalone.

I keep on getting following internal error:

Error vmware-converter-worker[05796] [Originator@6876 sub=Ufa.HTTPService]
Failed to read request; stream: <io_obj p:0x01446f2c, h:-1, <pipe '\\.\pipe\vmware-converter-worker-soap'>,
<pipe '\\.\pipe\vmware-converter-worker-soap'>>,
error: class Vmacore::TimeoutException(Operation timed out)

I have tried to disable UAC and Turn of firewall and antivirus. I am lost here. Any hints on how to fix this?

I found some info linking this to an issue regarding systems that have the /3GB switch added in the boot.ini file located on the boot drive - but I have no boot.ini on the computer.

TIA, Kind regards S. Dalby

Converter failing with: The operation experienced a network error

$

I can't believe there is any kind of network issue because all of my VM's are working and on the network.

I am running version 6.1.1 and have tried three different ESXi servers. Two are 5.5 and one is 6.0 servers and they all fail. I have also tried this on another PC that fails.

I have also tried different VM's to import. I took one of the VM's and converted it on my PC from one drive to another drive and that works telling me the VM isn't the issue.

I found one article on the web from VMware Converter: "The operation experienced a network error" - discussing the network error issue but said it was something else that he got around.

The other strange thing it does, the progress bar gets to 50% and then speeds up to 98% and then goes back to 6% where it fails.

I have attached the log files from one of the tests.

Thanks

Converter Hangs at 1%

I've got a machine that I've been tasked to virtualize, but I never get any farther than 1%, which is wierd because a collegue of mine P2Ved this server a couple months ago and it went through. (we had to delete that VM because it wasn't brought online in time.)

The conversion doesn't fail, it just stays at 1%.

Server is a Windows Server 2003 R2 box and it's main role is Raisers Edge. I turned off all the SQL services per another post. I'm not quite sure what else to include, other than the logs.

Thanks.

'vCenter Converter' fails to install with 'Error 29142: Could not start service Vstor2 MntApi 2.0 Driver (shared)'

Hi,

Trying to install 'vCenter Converter', the installer fails with this error:

    - Error ->        "Error 29142: Could not start service Vstor2 MntApi 2.0 Driver (shared)"

    - Event Viewer ->     "The Vstor2 MntApi 2.0 Driver (shared) service failed to start due to the following error: A device attached to the system is not functioning"

Environment is:

    - Physical Machine: HP Compaq nw8440 ( laptop )

    - Operating System: Windows XP Professional SP3

    - Run 'vCenter Converter' installer using 'Administrator' account

There is nothing attached to the laptop when I try to install 'vCenter Converter'

I tried:

    - Several versions of 'vCenter Converter' from 4.3.0 to 5.5.3 ( all of them supporting installation in Windows XP ) -> Same error

    - Uninstall / Reinstall USB ports ( USB Root Hub ) in the Physical Machine -> Same error

    - Restart several times the Physical Machine -> Same error

Attached is the log file the installer generated ( invoking the installer: VMware-converter-all-5.5.0-292238.exe /v"/l*v VMwareInstall.log" ) -> Search for: '29142'

Any idea?

Thanks

FAILED: Unable to create a VSS snapshot of the source volume(s). Error code: 2147754758 (0x80042306)

$

I see this issue going on for years, and for me it is still relevant for me using versions 6.1.1 and 6.2.

I want to convert a pair of Windows 2012 R2 servers to get a test environment in Workstation.

There are one domain controller and one member server.

I can't P2V any of them. All attempts has resulted in Error code: 2147754758 (0x80042306) within 2 minutes.

I only want to convert the system drives, and they has this layout:

Grey: 300 MB

Red:   99 MB

Yellow: 185 GB 50% free NTFS

(In version 6.2 there is an additional partition at 127 MB showing a question mark icon)

There are data drives attached to the servers as well, but I do not want to virtualize those.

In the settings before hitting the Finish button I changed as follows, to adapt to the hardware running VMware Workstation:

RAM 512 GB -> 8 GB

CPU 2x10 cores +HT -> 1x2 cores

After each converting attempt, the VSS service stops, as do the Microsoft Software Shadow Service Provider service.

In the converter logs I can't find much useful - perhaps I need guidance in what to look for besides the word "Error".

In the Windows System Event Log, I found this of interest, but I do not know how to proceed from here.

Any help and suggestions will be appreciated.
