Log Highlights:

Error: Unable to clone the volume mounted on '/' from '<ip address>'

I've been having issues with getting this Linux xencenter vm to convert over to VMware, and I've been able to fix a few issues, but now I'm not 100% certain what is next...

The error above occurred at 17%, but had also occurred at 11% initially. Disabling SSL got the conversion past 11%.

What could be the next issue?

Hi, we tried to do p2v migration with vmware converter 6.1.1 for physical Ubuntu 12.04 server, but it is failing at 95% with below errors, we did couple of other p2v migration and that went well. Looks like it is something related with tar conversion, not sure though.

Need helps to fix this issue. Any help is highly appreciated.

Hi

I get the above error when trying to P2V a Windows 2000 SP4 server using the "Import Computer" function in VirtualCenter V2.5 (Build 147704). I have tried to delete the ADMIN$ and IPC$ shares on the client machine I am running the VI Client from, but as you create the job the IPC$ is reconnected. If you delete the IPC$ during the creation of the job, the job is terminated. I have tried using "net use * /del " and the IPC$ is recreated as the job is started. My colleague used RDP to directly connect to the VirtualCenter server to create the P2V job, but also got the same error as above. He also uninstalled VMware Converter on the VirtualCenter server and reinstalled it again. I have tried to manually map the IPC$ using the same credentials as I created the P2V job with.

I have uninstalled the VMware Converter Enterprise Service from the source server machine, and obviously it is reinstalled when you create the job and the source server is rebooted. I have tried a domain and local admin accounts, and rebooting my XP desktop that runs the VI client.

I can't check if there a session already connected through My Computer, Manage, Shared Folders because the Windows XP SP2 desktop is locked down with group policies.

Any suggestions welcome!

VMware vCenter Converter - P2V Linux Machine Error?

$

I'm trying to do P2V with a Debian powered-on source. Everything works perfectly up until the point of selecting destination.

It states that the destination type is VMware Infrastructure virtual machine.

It asks for the server details and along the right it states that supported VMware Infrastructure products include VMware vCenter Server 2.0, 2.5 and 4.0. Great, I thought, because I'm running VMware vCenter Server 4.0.1 on this (both) machine(s).

So I try to specify the details of my machine but I get any one of a few errors:

  • Timeout
  • Unable to recognise the server type or version
  • Target machine actively refused the connection

What confuses me the most is that I'm using the same details of the server I connected to in the first place, therefore I know that it can connect to the server and it is running.

The server is running on my laptop, the agent is running on the Linux machine. I get this same error whether I use the client on my laptop or the Linux machine itself!

Any ideas? Do I need another product running to be the 'destination'?

P2V Linux and LVM support on converted virtual machine?

$

Hello,

I tried a P2V from an RH4 server using Vmware Converter standalone 4. I did an 'online server' conversion.

The source server was using LVM for almost all partitions. I notice on the converted virtual machine that no LVM configuration was here. The converter only took the LVM partition and replicated it to normal partiiton on the destination -> NO more LVM on the VM.

I tried to lookup on the KB or forums, but was not able to find anyone talking about that....

Is the conversion LVM to LVM supported at this time? or is there another way to do it with the Converter?

Thanks, Sylvain

I'm trying to P2V (Using VMWare Converter 4) a Redhat Linux server and it keeps failing at 31%. The Status in the Converter shows as: FAILED: MethodFault.summary when it fails.

Both the server's NIC and the VMWare ESXi 4 server are set to 1000 MBit/s, Full Duplex.

I've tried the conversion without tweaking any of the destination specs (ie RAM, disk space, etc), but with the same results. It seems to fail after starting to clone the volume mounted on /var

IPv6 isn't turned on for the ESXi server. I'm running the conversion from my Windows XP SP3 desktop.

I've attached the diagnostic logs.

Thank you in advance for any insight.

Dan

VMware vCenter Converter and Acronis True Image 11 .tib files

I am trying to convert a backup of my XP partiton (which was done using Acronis True Image Home 11 release) to a virtual machine. When I browse to the tib image file and click the View Source Details link or click Next, it shows an error message at the top of Converter window stating "The source paramteers are invalid." I thought Acronis True Image 10 and 11 were fully supported and would work? Does anyone have any ideas what I can do to use this image? Do I need to do anything different when creating the image file in Acronis True Image?

Converter stuck at 1 %

Hello,

I get stuck with Vmware Converter at 1 % done. It is trying to make snapshot of the volumes.

I am converting physical machine

Blade 460c g6 with two disk sized 20 GB and 200 GB (SAN)

destination is ESX 3.5

The machine is in almost idle state, but it has MS Sql server installed. I haven't shut it down.

I have waited for two hours before canceling. And even the cancel was stuck until I killed the converter process on source machine.

I saw similar thread where user was stuck at 2 % but didn't find it helping because he already got past the snapshot.

Log-file from source.

Another Linux P2V Converter Issue: GRUB Failure

Hello.

I am trying to p2v an Ubuntu 10.04 x64 server using vCenter Converter Standalone version 4.3 to a host running ESXi 4.1. The layout of my physical server is such:

Disk /dev/sda: 159.5 GB, 159450660864 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 19385 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x00030a8c

   Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1   *           1         244     1951744   83  Linux
Partition 1 does not end on cylinder boundary.
/dev/sda2             244         730     3906560   82  Linux swap / Solaris
Partition 2 does not end on cylinder boundary.
/dev/sda3             730       19386   149853184   83  Linux

No LVM in use. When I perform the conversion it fails at 99%. The converter log shows:

[2011-02-15 15:20:49.588 07708 info 'App'] [task,373] [task-5] -- ERROR -- Convert: converter.fault.CloneFault
(converter.fault.CloneFault) {
   dynamicType = <unset>,
   faultCause = (vmodl.MethodFault) null,

/vmware-updateGrub.sh: 38: grub: not found
Error running GRUB
Error running vmware-updateGrub.sh through chroot into /mnt/p2v-src-root
",
   msg = "",
}

I cannot start the VM. I followed instructions I found at http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1021306 and http://communities.vmware.com/message/1395202#1395202 with no success.

What I have found, based on exploring the system after using the Ubuntu 10.04 ISO to boot from, is that the drive structure has been maintained in the new VM, but there is nothing in /boot. I ran apt-get install grub2 and the legacy udpater command as per one of the above threads, and it created a /boot/grub directory but no grub.cfg. I then ran upgrade-grub and it created grub.cfg but still no joy.

The source OS is listed in the compatibility guide so I'm not sure why this isn't working, but I'm hoping someone can help me figure out a way to make this work. I'm so close, and it'd be really great to be able to use this. I appreciate your ideas and suggestions.

Thanks.

How do I remove HP Network Configuration Utility

$
0

I am P2Ving some HP machines and have read the posts here on how to remove most of the HP components but I am stuck on how to get rid of the HP network Configuration Utility program which puts the HP Network icon in the system tray. There is a post from Guillermo Musumeci back in 2007 that said using this command:

snetcfg.exe -v -u cq_cpqteam

should do it but I can't find snetcfg.exe on this server.

There is also a post from Jasemccarty in 2007 that said this keymay be the key you have to remove:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Network\

{4D36E975-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\{FD0FF0D6-4876-4894-9274-258564E35C07}

But that key doesn't appear to be in the registry on this server. Anyone have any ideas on how to remove this last bit of HP centric software from a P2V'd VM?

Anyone know why HP makes it so blasted difficult to remove their drivers and other components?

thanks,

Dan

The system is an ubuntu 10 system. The error I get is "FAILED: An error occurred during the conversion: 'GrubInstaller::InstallGrub: /usr/lib/vmware-converter/installGrub.sh failed with return code: 127, and message: Installing GRUB1 on (hd0)... /vmware-updateGrub.sh: 59: grub:
not found Error installing GRUB Error running vmware-updateGrub.sh through chroot into /mnt/p2v-src-root '"

The log highlights show "Error: Unable to configure the destination virtual machine"

I was so thrilled when I saw how fast the conversion was moving along. I am using vCenter Converter Standalone 5. I know I've been asking a lot of questions over the past few days and I really really appreciate all the help. Please, help me again!! Thanks,

P 2 V Unable to create a VSS Error code 2147754774

VM Forum Team,

        I have attempted on 5 separate attempts to convert a P2V machine using a hot back up ( due to encrypted disk).

Each time it fails with the following error code: FAILED: Unable to create a VSS snapshot of the source volume(s). Error code: 2147754774 (0x80042316).

I have tried the following remediation steps to accomplish a work around:

  • Selective startup eliminating all non-core services
  • Re-register of VSS components
  • Login of local admin / Run converter as admin
  • Clear registry of sub VSS backup items
  • Disable all antivirus

At this point I am look for any further recommendations.

Specs:

  • Converter 5.1 - 875114
  • Host OS Win 7 SP1 32 bit on NTFS (w/ Sophos Encryption)
  • Image size 320 GB

Advice would be appricated.. the log is attached to this msg.

* Follow on question, could I use MS backup to create a system image and then convert that to VDMK?*
