Can I do a P2V on a LIVE file server, and delay the switchover?

Hi,

May sound like a really simple question, but I can't afford to get it wrong.

We have Windows 2003 R2 servers, which are file servers, with 100 users connected, who rely on these servers to be up during work hours. They are critical machines, and we can't really afford ANY downtime, a few seconds is fine as long as nobody notices, and that any open files that people are working on do not get lost.

Because the server has upto 1TB of data on it, we can't really estimate how long it will take to do the P2V. So we'd ideally like to start this in a morning, then perhaps do the switchover at the end of our working day, so as to not upset any of our users.

Can we do this? Can we do a P2V, and then re-run the process to find any changes that may of happened between it finishing the 1st run?

Basically, we can't really sit and watch it run all the way through, then make the switch when it's finished, because we have no way of knowing if it will finish outside working hours or not, and obviously we can't wait all night either!

We have at least 4 servers to do like this, any ideas really appreciated.

Many thanks, Alan

hello everyone,

I'm trying to convert a physical Windows 2008 R2 (SP1) to virtual, using Vmware vCenter Converter Standalone version 5.5 build 1362012, it fails at 1% (after around 40mins) with the following message

FAILED: Unable to create a VSS snapshot of the source volume(s). Error code:

2147754758 (0x80042306).

The windows systems has some LUNS (4 x various GB size each) from the SAN, being GUID Partition Table (GPT).  I went through the wizard typically, selecting  "powered on machine", destination "vmware workstation or other vmware virtual machine" selected vmware player 6.0.x and the target location being a LUN with 500GB space.

Now for data to copy I selected 3 of the LUNS (on which some database is residing) and put "Min size" option (but I have tried maintaining the size for different runs) to save on space.

Looking through the logs, i see the following errors

I wonder if the converter is not able to work on GPT partitions ?  (i think I've seen some community threads about this problem using v.5.1, but using 5.5 should be solved ?)

Any help is appreciated. Thanks

I'm trying to convert a remote linux server, and have run into a problem. I launch VMware vCenter Converter Standalone and can successfully connect to the remote machine (by IP address or hostname). However, the next thing it does is give the following error:

There is no '/boot' directory mounted on the source machine. It is required to create a bootable virtual machine. Please mount the '/boot' directory on the source machine.

However, /boot is mounted, as shown when I use SSH to connect to the source machine (using the same user/pass as provided to VMware Converter) and run mount -l:

/dev/md0 on /boot type ext3 (rw) []

Anybody run into this problem before? Any suggested solutions? The source machine is running Centos 4 (RHEL 4 clone).

vCenter Converter - migrate P2V without dedicated boot partition

Hi there,

I'm looking to migrate a physical machine to my ESXi cluster with vCenter Converter but actually I got this following error :

There is no '/boot' directory mounted on the source machine. It is required to create a bootable virtual machine. Mount the '/boot' directory on the source machine.

Is it possible to ignore this message ? Actually this server is in production and I don't have any space left on my hard drive to create another partition.

I would like to know if we can convert a physical machine to a VM without a dedicated /boot partition.

Note: I got a /boot folder but mounted on my /

If someone got any advice about this will be helpfull

Hello:

I am converting physical machines to VM sot hat we can consolidate our environment. The converter V5.1.0 Build1087880 fails at 71%, with a Warning:

so far, I have good progress on other physical machines except for this stubborn XP -X64 machine. We need to keep it for legacy reasons until there are replacement apps for all sw running on it (; This machine has SSD drive and no spinning HD

each time the conversion is able to start and complete the first on two drives. The GUI states its fine , but the log shows

When it gets to the second drive, I stops as it cant read some sector block.

I have run several apps to check and fix the D drive, but none find any issues. the XP-X64 machine has been restated after each test and re run. no issues are found on either drive

I have tried to run the converter without  the D drive. It wont let me do so as it states that the D drive Is critical to the conversion and wont proceed without it

I have attached GUI screen shots and two logs files

Can anyone please help?

Is there is a way to find the root problem or proceed?

if windows cant find an issue with  the D Drive why does the converter?

Hello there,

I am trying to convert a physical Windows 2008 std server into a VM, using the vCenter Standalone Converter, but I am always getting an error at 96% of the conversion procedure. The error I see on the "Log highliths" part of the window says "Error: An error occured during reconfiguration.".

I exported the logs from the last try, which I am placing below:

I tried to convert the machine with vSphere Standalond Converter from several machines (running just the client there, not the converter itself). I use the version 5.0.0 build-470252 of the standalone converter and I am trying to host it on an ESXi 5.0.0 469512 Hypervisor.

Any help would be really appreciated...

Looking for advice on P2V conversion of SBS 2011 Std, Exchange 2010, Sharepoint, SQL

$

Greetings,

I am somewhat of a VMware novice, but currently have two (soon to be three) ESXi hosts under my belt. They are all at separate locations.

I was not involved in the existing server in any way prior to this, but now it is mine. I was "thrown to the wolves" after the fact.

This will be the first "production" P2V conversion I am attempting. Though it will be the only VM on the host at this time,  I do anticipate further VMs on this host in the future.

Given my restrictions, I would like to know the easiest way to do this conversion. The last two hosts I did were new installs (Server 2012 Essentials and Std), not conversions.  Though, just for learning purposes,  I DID do standalone P2V conversions of both of the existing physical servers, but never put them into production.  I can't remember if I actually spun them up or not. It was a while ago.  I think I did.  They were both SBS 2003 physical servers.  For a variety of reasons I do not have the luxury of a new install with this new system.

New host:  HP ML350p Gen 8. 64 GB RAM, 1+ TB usable RAID 5 internal storage. 2 Xeon 6 core CPUs.  ESXi 5.5.0 Upd 2. The latest HP firmware updates.

Existing physical server:  Dell something.  1 Xeon 3060, 4 GB RAM, 300 GB non redundant internal storage (one 300 gb volume).  Windows SBS 2011 Std. Running Exchange Server (2010) and SQL for SBS monitoring & SharePoint.

The existing physical server is the only server on the network, is (obviously) a domain controller, and the network is "flat". One subnet, no routing.

As mentioned above I have run the converter on a couple of other machines, They were both single servers, on single subnets but neither of them were running  Exchange, SQL or Sharepoint.

The various forums and and information I could find on the net has for the most part, been conflicting and sometimes confusing as well.

I did find a couple of posts that mentioned stopping both Exchange and SQL before the conversion. This seems to make sense for obvious reasons.  What else do I need to know of/should be aware of/watch out for etc.

Thanks for any insight you may be able to provide.

P2V Windows Server with multiple logical disks - creates 1 vmdk

Hi - when using VMware Converter what is the reason for creating 1 vmdk file when doing a P2V of a server that has 2 disks? Why doesn't it create two vmdk files?

Do most people just run the converter several times selecting 1 disk at a time??

When I select the C: and D: volumes of the server and resize them - instead of creating 2x15GB vmdk's it creates a 30GB vmdk.

What's best??

Hello,

I am trying to convert my Win 8.1 64bit Machine to a running VM.

I am using vCenter Converter Standalone 5.5.3 and VM Workstation 10.0.4

I had a problem with my PCI Devices so I followed this instruction:Re: VMware opens and quickly closes a virtual machine

Now I am getting a BSOD while loading windows with following message: SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED

Trying to get it running on two machines: HP 2760p and Dell D630. I heard it can be a driver problem so I tried to boot in failsafemode.Same Error. What can I do about this?

Thank You and sorry for my bad english.

Unable to connect to the network share '\\localmachine\sharedname'

$

I'm using VMware vCenter Converter Standalone client, v5.0.0 build-470252, running on a Windows 7 64bit computer, trying to import a running Windows 2008 virtual machine (hosted by VMWare infrastructure) onto my local box.

On starting the converter, I "Connect to a local server"

Specifying the source system goes smoothly, though I ignore the certificate error.  The conversion wizard installs its agent and connects to it OK.

For the Destination System I specify:

Destination type: VMware Workstation or other VMware virtual machine
VMware product: VMware Workstation 8.0.x
Virtual machine details:
Name: same as source system, as detected by the converter
Location for the virtual machine: \\localmachine\sharedfoldername
Username & password: my Windows 7 login credentials, with Full Control over \\localmachine\sharedfoldername, both the share and the underlying folder.

When the converter verifies the destination parameters, it reports: Unable to connect to the network share '\\localmachine\sharedfoldername'"

Investigative steps so far:
- Connecting to the share via Windows Explorer works fine; it is possible to write to the share

- I tried specifying the share as "\\localhost\sharedfoldername", but get "The specified network share 'localhost\sharedfoldername' does not exist."  This was a bit of a long shot I guess, but the form does work in Windows Explorer.

- Have tried with file and print sharing both on and off - seemed worth a try after looking at other posts on this forum

The Help states "If you are connected to a local Converter Standalone server, provide a network path or a local path to the destination directory."  I tried local path "C:\Virtual Machines\sharedfoldername", but got the message "Error: Destination specified as a (local) drive.  Please specify a UNC path such as: \\machine\sharename"

The help also states "You do not have to provide user credentials if the destination location is on the local storage of the machine where Converter Standalone server runs."  However the Next button is always disabled until credentials are provided.

Can anyone help please?

Problem converting a physical Ubuntu 14.04 server

$

Hi there. Anyone else tried to convert a physical Ubuntu 14.04 installation? For me it fails at grub-version check it seems like.

I also tried it on 12.04 and it works fine. The differense is this:

12.04:

$ grub-install -v

grub-install (GRUB) 1.99-21ubuntu3.14

14.04:

$ grub-install -V

grub-install (GRUB) 2.02~beta2-9

In 14.04 I have to use capital V for version check. Is it possible to change this in the Converter? I'm using Converter version 5.5

The result seems to be that the converter installs the wrong version of grub, or not at all.

Agent converter Error ColdClone P2V to ESXI 5.5 server

i am Trying to convert a machine in a coldclone environment, because the current vConverter software does not support the raid system on a machine. Thus, i do not want to disable it.  (Cold clone iso 4.1)

The converter stop somewhere in the step 2 where i need to select my datastore. After Choosing it, it goes fine, with a loading circle saying "Checking destination availability...", and then, it hangs a good time (20-30 seconds) at the line "Verifying desitination parameters...".

Afterward, the converter returns an error : unknown error returned by vmware vConverter agent.

Anybody has ideas on the current problem ?

Thanks

How do you disable SSL...

How do you disable SSL...in Converter 4.3

I have to migrate some Windows 2003 Servers (non R2 so I must version 4.3). Performance is slow so I want to disable SSL.

In the C:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware vCenter Converter Standalone\converter-worker.xml file there is a section:

<!-- Remove the following node to disable SSL -->

<ssl>

   <!-- Private key file -->

   <privateKey>ssl/rui.key</privateKey>

   <!-- Certificate file -->

   <certificate>ssl/rui.crt</certificate>

</ssl>

So I remove the above node from the file and restart the VMware vCenter Converter Standalone Worker service. Then open Converter and click on the "Convert Machine" button I get the following error:

Below is the entire unadulterated converter-worker.xml file for 4.3

on the target virtual machine. And this could lead to such problems as not

enough space in the target virtual machine or timeout error during P2V.

If set to true, Converter will preserve the sparseness of the source files on

the target. But this could also bring some performance penalties during the

         conversion.

      <keepSparseFile>true</keepSparseFile>

instead and Converter will use "sudo" to run priveleged commands on the

         source.

Important to note: when using "sudo", the user has to make sure by herself that

nothing on the source is blocking "sudo" from remote without a sudo password.

E.g. they have to make sure no password is requrired when the non-root user is

using "sudo". And also make sure "sudo" can be used without tty (comment out the

line "Default requiretty" in the source's /etc/sudoers)

Normally during Linux P2V the helper VM is inaccessible to the user, but this

option overrides that behavior and allows the user to login to the console

         of the helper VM.

This could be useful to retrieve logs in case of a catastrophic failure of

the Converter HelperServer on the helper VM.  It could also be used to debug

problems with the network of the helper VM.

Important to note: when enabling this option it is highly recommended to

also disable powerOffHelperVm, so that the helper VM does not disappear

out from underneath of you when the task is finished.

Normally during Linux P2V the helper VM is powered off at the end of the

cloning process, whether the task was canceled, failed, or succeeded.

If the clone failed or was canceled prior to reaching the reconfiguration

step, then the target VM will also be deleted.  So this flag prevents the

target VM from being deleted as well, since you cannot delete a VM when it

         is still powered on.

useSourcePasswordInHelperVm to allow access to the helper VM in case of a

Hi,

I need to virtualize a linux server running SLES 11-SP1 at my work place. I thought that VMware converter could do the job and therefore I downloaded the Open Source VMware vCenter Converter Standalone 5.5.3 (file VMware-converter-5.5.3-oss.tgz), which I planned to install on my workstation, to create the virtual machine from the server's system disk. However now I realize from reading the documentation that apparently the software can only be installed on a Windows machine. Is that right? I also found that a previous version, ie. vCenter Converter Standalone 4.0.1, could run on linux machines (RedHat, SLES, Ubuntu,...). Is this the most recent version that could run on linux?

Untaring the file VMware-converter-5.5.3-oss.tgz generates a VMware-converter-5.5.1-oss directory which contains the following subdirectories:

These do not look like for windows, so is there any documented way to build the Converter on linux from these?

Copy split disk VM from Workstation to vCenter

Hey,

I have a split disk VM 8TB split in to 2TB disks. But when I use the converter to move this to vcenter it combines it as one 8TB disk.

Is there a way to get it to create the split disk on vCenter 5.5. Or can I create split disk vm's on vCenter 5.5 directly?

Thanks

I have referred the VMware forum and googled and tried many option like Evoke the program as Administrator/enable the VSS service/ Having enough free Space on the HDD/no firwall and antivirus.

only thing is this laptop is having the pointsec installed Encrypted HDD.

Anybody successfully converted the pointsec installed machine/laptop using this VMware converter tool ?

Appreciated much even small clue/suggestion on this..
