There is no '/boot' directory mounted...but it is mounted

I'm trying to convert a remote linux server, and have run into a problem. I launch VMware vCenter Converter Standalone and can successfully connect to the remote machine (by IP address or hostname). However, the next thing it does is give the following error:

There is no '/boot' directory mounted on the source machine. It is required to create a bootable virtual machine. Please mount the '/boot' directory on the source machine.

However, /boot is mounted, as shown when I use SSH to connect to the source machine (using the same user/pass as provided to VMware Converter) and run mount -l:

/dev/md0 on /boot type ext3 (rw) []

Anybody run into this problem before? Any suggested solutions? The source machine is running Centos 4 (RHEL 4 clone).

vCenter Converter - migrate P2V without dedicated boot partition

Hi there,

I'm looking to migrate a physical machine to my ESXi cluster with vCenter Converter but actually I got this following error :

There is no '/boot' directory mounted on the source machine. It is required to create a bootable virtual machine. Mount the '/boot' directory on the source machine.

Is it possible to ignore this message ? Actually this server is in production and I don't have any space left on my hard drive to create another partition.

I would like to know if we can convert a physical machine to a VM without a dedicated /boot partition.

Note: I got a /boot folder but mounted on my /

If someone got any advice about this will be helpfull

Converting problems with VMWare Converter Standalone 5.5 Error 14 opening disk, OpenDisks failed, mntapi error: 226 - The specified virtual disk needs repair

Hi Cummunity,

it's the first time I need to ask for help with VMWare Products in the last 8 years.

I am migration from VMWorkstation 6.5.1 to ESXi 5.5. Workstation runs under Win XP SP3. There are two VM's to be converted. The first one is an XP SP3 Engine used for Kerio Mailserver (of course, it will me migrated to a newer OS - but as usual there are issues migration Kerio Connect from XP to CentOS - so we need to stay a bit longer with the running system).

The second VM is a MS Server 2008 driving a MS SQL Server.

The conversion of the XP VM was done without any issues. But with the MS Server VM conversion is failing again and again. It fails before entering to ESXi Host IP-Address.

(Please have a look into the attached log file)

Current situation:

VMWare Converter Standalone runs on a Windows 7 System, SP1, 12GB Ram. The MS Server VM have been copied to the local disk. The VM has two virtual disks (SCSI) in separated folders  and is running fine with the VMWorkstation (no log entries found, that there is already something worse).

After several failures I decided to copy everything into one folder and change the vmx conf file (for the second virtual disk I removed only the path, the first one did not have any path in the setup).

Coming from the converter log files, my first guess was that there is not enough space on C on the Windows 7 System left.

First question:

  • Where can I change the temp path the converter is using or does the converter use the system temp path from the profile?

I moved some data from C to a another partion the get more free space (Freespace now 180GB).The VM has two virtual disks: Boot: 45GB persistent, and 24GB persistent.

Second questions:

  • How may free disk space to I need for this converting action?

I started the Converter as Administrator but it fails again with the same error. I step deeper into the log files and found some more error messages e.g. for the GUI itself. For Instance:

Hello everybody

We have 3 BlueOnyx on 5106R version. We want to convert to virtual machines the 3 physical machines.

We try to do it using the Vmware vConverter 5.5.3 to convert the 3 powered-on Linux machines.

I see the ssh connection and sftp connection using wireshark but I can't see the "View source details" information.

Vmware vConverter sent the error message fault.SysinfoQueryLinuxFault.summary (seeing in attachement).

BlueOnyx is based on the Centos 5 32 bits so I installed the same Centos version for try to convert it to virtual machine using Vmware vConverter.

I have successfully this conversion so I didn't understand what is the problem.

If someony can help me to do it ...

Thanks in advance for your help

Best regards

Matt

P2V Debian Etch/Lenny

hi

Can I migrate a physical Debian Etch/Lenny server using VMware vCenter Converter Standalone 5.x to ESX/vSpehere?

Hot-clone Hyper-V to vSphere (cloud migration tool)?

$

I am looking for a tool to allow me to hot-migrate internal Hyper-V and vSphere servers to cloud (external) vSphere hosts.

  • Can StandaloneConverterconvert Hyper-V VMs to vSphere?
  • Can I kick-off ahotconversion let it complete and then a day turn off the VMs services,  click a button to perform a last minute synchronization,  have it shutdown the source VM and now the destination vSphere VM is in production without loss of data and limited downtime?

Any restrictions on this type of migration?   Any data consistency issues with this solution?

Looking for options to migrate data from internal systems to external for our clients with the least amount of downtime.   Any other tools that might be worthwhile looking at?   Veeam Replication does not allow replication between Hyper-V and vSphere.   Platespin does not appear to allow migration from Hyper-V to vSphere (only vSphere to Hyper-V).

Thanks,

Poor transfer rate using Converter 5.0 Standalone compared to 4.3

$

I recently started using the newly released Converter 5.0.0 .  I had successfully done over 30 P2V's of Windows 2003 systems using version 4.3.  Immediately, I noticed two problems:

1) The average transfer rate dropped from about 100 MB/s to between 0.8 and 2 MB/s.

2) The process consistently failed following completion of C: drive cloning and starting on the D: drive.

I tried this on 5 different physical servers going to 5 different VMware ESXi 4.1 host servers and the result was always the same.  I assumed it was a Network or Firewall problem and sent the Network team on a "wild goose chase" for 2 days.  After they were convinced that the physical machine being P2V'd was simply not sending sufficient packets, I went back and re-installed version 4.3 and restarted the P2V transfer.  This time I received an average transfer rate of 100 MB/s (50x faster) and the entire process completed successfully.

Has anyone else seen a similar problem?  Any possible explanations?

BSOD on storport.sys after converting Amazon EC2 Windows 2008 x64

Greetings,

I get a BSOD on Storport.sys after converting an Amazon instance of Windows 2008 R2 Datacenter x64 after booting it using Workstation 8.

    I used vCenter Converter v5.

It appears after the loading bar, but before the Windows logo screen.  I suspect a HD driver issue.

I converted it to HW version 6.5, 7 and 8.  I also tried an IDE and LSI controllers.  Same issue.

Not sure what to do from there.

    Thx...

VMWare Standalone Converter 5.5.3 fails to migrate V2V with active source firewall

$

Hi VMWare experts ^^

I recently installed the Standalone Converter 5.5.3 to operate a VM migration from an ESX 5.1  to another ESX 5.1 ... they're not currently part of a vSphere architecture vCenter.

The source VM is a Windows 2008 R2 server standing on the source ESX.

The Converter is operating from a Windows 2008 R2 VM standing on the target ESX.

I select the "Powered on machine" option, set the correct IP, admin account (Domain or local makes no difference), password and OS family.

This is only working when the firewall is dropped down ... no matter what are the rules you create on your firewall. Even setting all the ports and services allowed on every profiles makes no difference (!!!)

I have read a number of technical subjects about this and still have no clue...

Recommended ports from VMWare are mainly the "File and printer sharing" windows ports (TPC/UDP 137,138,139,445,5355 etc ... + 443 ? 9089 ? 9090 ? 902 ?)

I have tried to disable SSL from the converter configuration file...

After a while ... I have tried to enable all the ports to check if I was missing an unknown port ... but no way

Here is part of the log I get from the Converter:

[01652 error 'Ufa.HTTPService'] Failed to read request; stream <io_obj p:0x016e6484, h:-1, <pipe '\\.\pipe\vmware-converter-server-soap'>, <pipe '\\.\pipe\vmware-converter-server-soap'>>, error: class Vmacore::TimeoutException(Operation timed out)

[ADS] GetTokenInformation failed: 1312

We notice that it is using local named pipes and that seems to fail ... I've read a subject on Microsoft KB about that and suggests to allow File and Printer sharing again ... but still no way ...

This is rather frustrating ... seems to be only a question of Windows Firewall since It works when dropped down but why and what is the trick ?

Once again Microsoft inside secret ?

Any help is welcomed... and diserves the tile of Expert ^^

"Warning: Unable to delete the block-level tracking bitmap" during Synchronise

Hello, I'm hoping someone can help me.

I have a very long running, nightmare of a P2V. I had issues getting the P2V started, then getting it running quickly, then once it eventually finished the first pass after about 5 days, I had problems running the Synchronizations. I eventually found that was due to Shadow Copies on C:. Disabled those and I could then reliably perform periodic Synchronizations, until we were ready to switch over..

Then I went on holiday. Whilst I was away, my colleagues had issues with the Anti-Spam and Anti-Virus on the server. Various things happened, including reboots and removal and re-installation of Anti-Virus and Anti-Spam.

Unfortunately, the synchronization is now no longer working. The error in the GUI is Warning: Unable to delete the block-level tracking bitmap 'IncrementalConversion(job-5:42)-[52 83 d1 c0 4c 11 ae e3-cc 3c 8e 81 bf 68 6d 0c]'. This is being repeated for each subsequent Sync I'm trying to run. I think the main error in the worker log is WindowsBitmapDriverWrapper::StartBitmapDriver: Unable to start the bitmap driver, error=0, reason=Service manager error but 'BMDRVR' is showing as running.

There's also mention of ERROR 2338 opening disk ha-nfc://[SS2_NFS1] MVSERVER/MVSERVER_2-000001.vmdk@192.168.0.12:902!52 1e 31 f9 09 b9 0b 1f-66 ca a1 50 1d ab ec 3e. MVSERVER_2-000001.vmdk doesn't currently exist, but MVSERVER_2-000002.vmdk gets renamed to MVSERVER_2-000001.vmdk during the process. Out of interest, can these snapshots be deleted prior to a Sync or will that cause the P2V to just fail?

I'm using Converter 5.5.2 installed on the source server. I've rebooted the ESX server, and I've run all the usual connectivity tests between the source server and destination host. It's a flat, fairly basic network.

I'm desperately hoping I can get this Sync working so that I can finalize it tonight. There's a lot of Data and I really hope I don't have to start from scratch. I'm going to try rebooting the source server tonight (unless someone advises against it).

Thanks in advance!

Hello!

When I used 5.5.3 version all was OK but migration process worked just via vCenter management site thus I downgrade client to 4.3. After that, the connecting issue was fixed but appeared new one.

I was trying to convert a power-on physical server to an esxi server and got the error such as "FAILED: A general system error occurred: DiskLib_Open failed on ha-nfc://[ESXI24ca_RAID5] xxx/xxxx.vmdk@esxi24ca.xxxxr.com:
902!52 dc 46 92 55 5b 0d f5-c2 a2 2f ee 1b a7 cc 9e with error One of the parameters supplied is invalid.

Any advice would be apriciate.

I'm doing a migration from xen to vmware esxi5.5 through vmware vCenter converter Standalone 5.5.2 with physical conversion (powered-on machine). I migrate more than 20 VMs and now I have a problem with 3 vm. I have the same error:

FAILED: An error occured while opening a virtual disk. Verify that the Converter server and the running source machines have a network access to the source and destination ESX/ESXi hosts.
