Blue screen 0x0000007B VM boot error with 64-bit Windows 2003

Blue screen 0x0000007B boot error with 64-bit Windows 2003 virtual machine converted from physical machine.

I am running VMWare Converter Starter Edition version 3.0.0 build-39557 installed on a Dell PowerEdge 2950 (a couple of months old) running Windows Server 2003 Enterprise x64 R2 (version 5.2.3790, SP1 with all the latest updates). The server has SCSI RAID drives (2 separate arrays for a physical C: and D: drive).

The physical machine is a new clean installation of 64-bit Windows Server 2003 with no other software installed except for VMWare Server and Converter.

I am attempting to create a virtual machine from this machine to run in VMWare Server (version 1.0.1 build-29996) on the same physical machine. The conversion appears to succeed, but when I attempt to start the new virtual machine, it begins to boot, displays the Windows 2003 startup screen briefly, and then fails with a blue screen with the following error:

STOP: 0x0000007B (0xFFFFFADFD520F3C0, 0xFFFFFFFFC0000034, 0x0000000000000000, 0x0000000000000000)

I understand the "0x0000007B" means that it can't access the boot device for some reason. I have searched these forums and the knowledge base, but haven't found a solution to this problem.

I have been able to successfully convert and boot a 32-bit Windows Server 2003 physical machine as a virtual machine running in this same VMWare Server. I don't have any other 64-bit machines to test this with.

I am logged in directly to the console of the physical machine with the administrator account. I enabled virtualization in the BIOS. I have tried various combinations when building the virtual machine (customizing or not, fixed or variable disk sizes, importing both C: and D: drives or importing only the C: drive, etc). I have the SYSPREP files from the x64 installation disks locally on the server, and I have run SETUPMGR in this folder to create a SYSPREP.INF file. All of these various attempts have failed with the same boot error.

Is it possible to build a 64-bit virtual machine using VMWare Converter Starter Edition? Any suggestions on how to resolve this issue?

P2V of Centos Server fails with key can't be retrieved

Hi,

I'm running Converter Standalone version 5.1.0 and am attempting to P2V a physical Centos 5.3 server to my vSphere 5.1 environment. When the conversion job kicks-off, the helper VM is created, it powers on and boots up ok, the job log says "Connected to the Converter helper server on the destination virtual machine" and then the helper VM powers off and deletes and the job fails with the message "Failed at 1%. A general system error has occurred: Network error. Host <hostname of source machine> key can't be retrieved (return code 2)".

I am able to SSH to the server and login as root without a problem. When Converter initially connects to the machine when I'm setting up the job, it retrieves all it's details OK and shows me all its configuration information OK etc. I'm thinking that the "key can't be retrieved" in the failure message is the clue, but I don't know what "key can't be retrieved" means.

HELP!

Regards,

George.

Converter 5 does not recognize LVM partition on Oracle Linux 6

I've got two physical servers running Oracle Linux Server release 6.3 64-bit.  They each have a /boot partition that is ext4 and the rest on an LVM partition:

/dev/mapper/vg_cleveland-lv_root /                       ext4    defaults        1 1
UUID=3d37688e-305a-4974-9bb7-f02232b78790 /boot                   ext4    defaults        1 2
/dev/mapper/vg_cleveland-lv_swap swap                    swap    defaults        0 0
tmpfs                   /dev/shm                tmpfs   defaults        0 0
devpts                  /dev/pts                devpts  gid=5,mode=620  0 0
sysfs                   /sys                    sysfs   defaults        0 0
proc                    /proc                   proc    defaults        0 0

vCenter Converter is only recognizing the /boot partition in the "Data to copy" section "Select volumes to copy".

If I go forward the conversion fails when trying to reconfigure the VM.  I've looked through the user guide and googled a bit but I can't seem to find why the ext4 LVM partition is not being recognized by Converter 5.

unable to create a vss snapshot of the source volume error code 2147754753 (0x80042301) in vmware converter

I'm trying to do P2V for our active directory domain controller. The source machine is a windows 2008 R2. I'm getting a VSS error on the DC.

I'm seeing this error in converter. "Unable to create a VSS snapshot of the source volume. Error code 2147754753 (0x80042301).

The source machine is in DSRM mode as we cannot perform an online migration of active directory domain controller.

On the server I can see log for VSS Event ID 84 i.e. This machine is a Domain Controller in Directory Services Restore Mode (DSRM), Backup cannot be performed in this case, please reboot out of DSRM.

Please help me regarding this as I am stuck and not able to get any resolution for this issue.

vmWare converter 5.5.3 or 5.1 Acronis Server 10 tib. Small tib file no problem. Larger tib "The source parameters are invalid"

Is there a file size limit to the converter? It seems 1 or 2 gig files have no issue, but 50 gig and up causes The source parameters are invalid.  I just tested with a 22 gig tib file and it worked fine.

Hi all,

I restored an image into am empty virtual machine with VMware Workstation 10. In order to make it bootable I used the VMware Converter Standalone (5.1.2, with the latest version I get same error message). I used configure machine to do it but I get an error message during execution: FAILED: Fault.ReconfigurationFault.summary.

Does anyone knows how to fix this problem?

Thanks in advance.

Remove Broadcom Team Adapter after a conversion

What's the best way to remove the team after the conversion?  You can't open the Broadcom utility because no adapters exist.  If you try to remove the BASP Virtual Adapter from the device manager it says "failed to uninstall the device.  The device may be required to boot up the computer"

Hi,

I am trying to P2V a couple of Ubuntu server using the Converter Standalone client 5.1.  I have tried to enable sudo to not use passwords, as described in the following KB article  VMware KB: Enabling the use of a non-root user for hot cloning of a Linux source machine

I have also tried to just enable the password for the root user per this posting.  Ubuntu 8.10 P2V sudo

All with no luck.  I have attached the worker log and the server log.  It looks like the ubutu server may be activly killing my connection.  Any thoughts?

Hello all,

I am trying to migrate VMs from standalone VSphere ESXi 5.0.0 servers (Build 469512) to our production vCenter Cluster 5.1.0 (Build 947673).

The VMs to be migrated are a range of Debian Squeeze, Ubuntu and dedicated Linux appliances, none of them use LVM.

I'm running the converter on Windows 7 64bit with an i5-2500, 8GB of RAM, latest BIOS, chipset and relevant drivers.

I've been able to convert several of the machines with no issues. My computer will no longer convert machines, however my colleagues with the same configuration will.

I have built a straight forward Debian Squeeze VM on one of the standalone ESXi hosts, I cannot convert it, however my colleague can (using my credentials).

I have uninstalled, restarted and re-installed the converter.

Looking through the logs, the issue is the creation of the disk on the attached storage. I also see API errors where the Converter is calling the API on my machine.

If it was errorCode 3 for the highlighted section below, that would be cannot create file. I cannot find a listing of the error codes to find out what 2 is.

I have attached the server, gui and worker logs.

From the worker log:

Converting problems with VMWare Converter Standalone 5.5 Error 14 opening disk, OpenDisks failed, mntapi error: 226 - The specified virtual disk needs repair

Hi Cummunity,

it's the first time I need to ask for help with VMWare Products in the last 8 years.

I am migration from VMWorkstation 6.5.1 to ESXi 5.5. Workstation runs under Win XP SP3. There are two VM's to be converted. The first one is an XP SP3 Engine used for Kerio Mailserver (of course, it will me migrated to a newer OS - but as usual there are issues migration Kerio Connect from XP to CentOS - so we need to stay a bit longer with the running system).

The second VM is a MS Server 2008 driving a MS SQL Server.

The conversion of the XP VM was done without any issues. But with the MS Server VM conversion is failing again and again. It fails before entering to ESXi Host IP-Address.

(Please have a look into the attached log file)

Current situation:

VMWare Converter Standalone runs on a Windows 7 System, SP1, 12GB Ram. The MS Server VM have been copied to the local disk. The VM has two virtual disks (SCSI) in separated folders  and is running fine with the VMWorkstation (no log entries found, that there is already something worse).

After several failures I decided to copy everything into one folder and change the vmx conf file (for the second virtual disk I removed only the path, the first one did not have any path in the setup).

Coming from the converter log files, my first guess was that there is not enough space on C on the Windows 7 System left.

First question:

  • Where can I change the temp path the converter is using or does the converter use the system temp path from the profile?

I moved some data from C to a another partion the get more free space (Freespace now 180GB).The VM has two virtual disks: Boot: 45GB persistent, and 24GB persistent.

Second questions:

  • How may free disk space to I need for this converting action?

I started the Converter as Administrator but it fails again with the same error. I step deeper into the log files and found some more error messages e.g. for the GUI itself. For Instance:

Hello Folks,

I recently installed VMWare Converter Standalone version 4. I've tried several times to convert RedHat Linux (version 4) physical box to VM but did not get any luck. The conversion keeps failing when it tries to clone /var directory. Note that I can convert Linux machine with Suse Enterprise version 10 without any issue. Do you guy have any ideas about this?

KVM Conversion?

Has anyone successfully converted a KVM VM to ESXi 5 using VMware Converter 5?

thanks

Converter Hangs at 1%

I've got a machine that I've been tasked to virtualize, but I never get any farther than 1%, which is wierd because a collegue of mine P2Ved this server a couple months ago and it went through. (we had to delete that VM because it wasn't brought online in time.)

The conversion doesn't fail, it just stays at 1%.

Server is a Windows Server 2003 R2 box and it's main role is Raisers Edge. I turned off all the SQL services per another post. I'm not quite sure what else to include, other than the logs.

Thanks.

Conversion failed with error message "FAILED: The VSS snapshots cannot be stored because there is not enough space"

Hi All,

I have a Laptop with

     6 GB RAM,

     300 GB HDD,

     2 CPU (1 socket and 2 cores)

     Windows 7 64 bit OS.

I am having external HDD (2TB capacity with 460 GB free space) which will have the destination folder for the VM.

When I try to convert this using  VMware converter standalone I am getting this following error.

"FAILED: The VSS snapshots cannot be stored because there is not enough space on the source volumes or because the source machine does not have any NTFS volumes. Error code: 2147754783 (0x8004231F)."

I have attached the error log for your reference.

Thanks in advance to all for helping to overcome this issue.

Cheers

Multiple partitions to multiple volumes P2V

Hi there,

At work we're working on a Windows Server 2008 SP2 (SCCM 2007 R3) P2V to solve a disk space problem before upgrading to SCCM 2012 (later next year).

I've starting to prepare this P2V but the server has a complex partition design, which kinda look like the attached screenshot : multiple volumes, multiple partitions including extended partitions.

Target volume configuration would be something like :

- C: - 1 on one volume, 1 VMDK (30 -> 60 GB)

- E: - 1 on one volume, 1 VMDK (1 -> 5 GB)

- F: - 1 on one volume, 1 VMDK (1 -> 5 GB)

- G: - 1 on one volume, 1 VMDK (1 -> 5 GB)

- H: - 1 on one volume, 1 VMDK (1 -> 5 GB)

- I: - 1 on one volume, 1 VMDK (1 -> 5 GB)

I've launched Converter on our preproduction environment and I can't see an option allowing me to "split" those partition into multiple volumes...

Another option would be to multiple copy this volume after the P2V and delete E F G H and I on the first, C F G G I on the next, C E G H I, etc etc.

Any idea ?

Regards,

Sebastien
