CentOS 5.3 , Kernel Panic - mount: could not find filesystem '/dev/root'

$

Hi.

I am trying to convert a machine based on CentOS 5.3 , I keep getting "kernel panic" on boot.

mount: could not find filesystem '/dev/root'

setuproot: moving /dev failed: No such file or directory

setuproot: error mounting /proc  failed: No such file or directory

setuproot: error mounting /sys failed: No such file or directory

switchroot: mount failed: No such file or directory

Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!-220000

I have followed the instructions on fixing this :

http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1002402

http://blog.edgoad.com/2010/03/vmware-no-volume-groups-found.html

but I still get "Kernel Panic"

I have re-installed the CentOS kernel but that didn't make any difference.

I have tried installing disk labels but that didn't make any difference.

I have tried VMware Standalone converter 5.5 and 5.0 with the same results.

I have confirmed the presence of /dev, /sys and /proc directories.

I have tried this : echo "DMRAID=no" > /etc/sysconfig/mkinitrd/noraid chmod 755 /etc/sysconfig/mkinitrd/noraid as suggested here :
http://tech.lanesnotes.com/2009/05/converting-physical-linux-system-to.html

I was advised to change the disks to IDE , but I can't see anyway to do this in ESXi 5.1 .

I'm at a loss at this point , I'm open to suggestions.

Here are my configs as shown when using a rescue disk and chroot into /mnt/sysimage

Acronis 11.5 - error on coverting an image

I was given a USB drive with several Acronis 11.5 image (.tib) files.

Converter does not work - I get an error ,,,,The source parameters are invalid

So, I was going to try a restore of an image to a VM by booting up the Acronis Universal Restore and selecting the image.

However, the image disk is 298 gb but only about 30gb is used

Since I can't use converter to down size, what is the best way to get the image over to a VM?

Searching I couldn't find anything related to "Cannot format volume"

Tried converting Windows 2008R2 server from one vSphere 5.1 server to a new vSphere 6.0 using vCenter Converter Standalone 6.

The source VM was fully powered off.

4 partitions on the server, 3 were successful but the last failed almost immediately.

One partition was increased from 100GB to 200GB, that was successful.

Second and third partition was 220GB and left alone, successful

The fourth partition failed we were trying to increase the size from 500GB to 2TB.

Converter Job failing trying to copy live system.

I'm trying to copy a live Centos 5 system to a new ESX environment in order to upgrade it. I'm using ESXi 6.0.0 and the standalone converter 6.0.0 build=2716716. I create the job to copy the system, and it runs a while and then fails with the message A General System error occurred: No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it.

Why would the machine the tool creates refuse the connection to transfer data. I've done some google searches on this and most everything I've found points to a network misconfiguration. I've manually set the ip address of the ESXi system and the new system, so I'm not using DHCP to get addresses.

Anyone succesfull with 6.0.0

I have been working all day on a single machine standard and clean MS Windows 7 64bit enterprise.

This OS is not uncommon but spells a world of trouble for VMWare Converter standalone 6.0.0.

To the point that makes me wonder if this production software. I'm just posting in the many many error messages I have seen throughout the day.

I managed to find workarounds for most of the issues untill I hit

FAILED: Unable to create '\\.\vstor2-mntapi20-shared-C37ABC700000F015000000000C00

This turns out to be a show stopper. There is no way of fixing this.

Which made me wonder. What OS is VMWare Converter supposed to support? It is not MS WIndows 7 for sure.

Is this maybe only for server OS software? Not desktop OS.

Converting CentOS 7 VM to VM fails at 97% grub...

I'm trying to do a VM to VM conversion to reduce the amount of space being taken up. I've tried 3 times and always get the same error message:

GrubInstaller::InstallGrub: Failed to read GRUB configuration from /mnt/p2v-src-root/boot/grub2/grub.cfg

When the VM boots, I'm immediately shown a grub prompt. I tried to use a grub rescue disk but it says that there is no known filesystem detected.

Using the CentOS 7 minimal boot iso, I can access the file system. I'm just not sure what I should do from that point?

Using the latest version of VMWare Converter 6.1, the OS is CentOS 7 fully updated.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

I am looking for an iso version of vmware so that I can do a P2V with a RedHat machine. I heard that to get the iso version you need to download the zip file. Does anyone know where I can download either the zip or the iso version of VMware Converter 3.0.1?

Thanks

Unable to install converter agent - installation is interrupted

$

I'm unable to convert a running machine using vmware converter. I've tried to install the agent and the full standalone converter. Both say that the installation is interrupted. The Event Log messages don't provide any new information.

The vmware log files are attached. They seem to indicate that a reboot is pending, but I've rebooted many times and it doesn't change. I read about a similar problem in KB#1029288, but those registry keys were either empty or didn't exist.

Before this attempt, nothing from vmware was installed on the machine. It is running Windows XP SP1 and is part of a domain but I was logged in as a local admin user. The original "Administrator" account cannot be used.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

P2V of Centos Server fails with key can't be retrieved

$

Hi,

I'm running Converter Standalone version 5.1.0 and am attempting to P2V a physical Centos 5.3 server to my vSphere 5.1 environment. When the conversion job kicks-off, the helper VM is created, it powers on and boots up ok, the job log says "Connected to the Converter helper server on the destination virtual machine" and then the helper VM powers off and deletes and the job fails with the message "Failed at 1%. A general system error has occurred: Network error. Host <hostname of source machine> key can't be retrieved (return code 2)".

I am able to SSH to the server and login as root without a problem. When Converter initially connects to the machine when I'm setting up the job, it retrieves all it's details OK and shows me all its configuration information OK etc. I'm thinking that the "key can't be retrieved" in the failure message is the clue, but I don't know what "key can't be retrieved" means.

HELP!

George.

Unable to select VMware Infrastructure Server

Hi,

I'm trying to convert a Ubuntu 12.04 VM to a VMware Workstation VM using the Standalone Converter on the same Windows 7 64bit machine. The

Source type for the VM is a 'Powered On Machine' with a OS Family of 'Linux'. I have worked out all the permission issues in the Ubuntu VM, so the

converter connects to the VM and brings me to the Wizards selection of the Destination System(see below.) The Pull-Down selection for destination

'Server' has no entries. What have I missed here?

Thanks,
