unable to create a VSS snapshot of source volume(s) p2v 2008 R2

I am trying to convert a physical Server 2008 R2. I have previously converted two other physical 2008 r2 servers but the one I am trying now keeps failing with error: FAILED: Unable to create a VSS snapshot of the source volume(s). Error code:2147754766 (0x8004230E). The two successful conversions I had to install ShadowProtect by StorageCraft for them to work. I have done the same thing on the server that is failing but it did not resolve the issue. I have verified that my MS volume shadow copy is set to manual and is started as well as the VSS service. I also ran vssadmin list writers and that runs successfully as well. I am running VMware vCenter Converter Standalone 4.30. I have the logs if anyone would like to look at them. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Solaris 10 VM Converted goes into a Boot Loop

$

We have a set of images sent to us by a customer. Not sure of the software used to create the images.

The images were taken from various physical servers with various operating systems (Linux, Solaris, Windows).

We used StarWinds free converter to convert the images to vmdk files.

Using VMware Workstation, we are able to create a VM and add the converted vmdk as the system disk.

We then used VMware converter to covert the VMs and move them over to ESXi Server 6.0.

We are able to boot a majority of the Linux VMs (RHEL 6).

However, Solaris boots up and goes into a boot loop...

Is there a mod required to stop the looping?

Thanks

After Conversion XP Hangs at Activation

$

I really hope someone is able to help. I'll try to be as thorough as possible in my explanation.

Here is the scenario. I have a Dell laptop with an OEM version of XP. I want to turn this into a Virtual Machine, then install Windows 7 on the laptop, then run the VM from within 7. However, I do not want the configuration of XP to change (the machine name and domain).

First I did the conversion (which took an act of Congress to complete succesfully). Then I needed to install the AHCI drivers. So I used my OEM disk and a floppy with the driver I needed and did a repair installation. And never during the repair installation did I get prompted for a product key.

Then I move my VM to a seperate machine (a Dell server). Windows boots up. I type in my password to login and it prompts me with You must activate this copy of Windows. Do you want to do it now? If I say No it logs me out. If I say Yes, the popup box goes away and I am left staring at my wallpaper. I've let it sit like that over night and nothing ever appears to happen.

The reason I moved the VM to the server is to avoid having duplicate names on the network. I have also checked the network connectivity of the server and it is fine. The VM shows that the virtual NIC is bridged but I don't really have a way to verify connectivity.

I know the OEM product key is a violation, but I plan on changing to a volume license as soon as I get the chance. I've tried using the SMBIOS.reflectHost = "TRUE" to see if that would let me login but it still prompts for activation (I expected that since it's on the server and not the laptop).

So my question is, what is causing XP to hang? From what I've read I think the Product Activation window is supposed to come up to either let me activate online or tell me to call, but I never get it.

Is there any solution other than changing the product key of the laptop to a volume license and then converting?

Thanks in advance!

P2V conversion on DC

I have read the best practices guide for converting DCs. I see that the guide does not recommend it. I do see where some say they don't ever have a issue converting DCs. I am looking for some real world feedback.

I have 2 DCs. One of which is the "backup DC" I would like to convert first. It also has several other roles along with hosting a bunch of different shares etc... I am trying to avoid having to re-setup all the other roles, services, and permissions outside of the DC role.

What are your thoughts on me demoting the DC, converting it to a VM, and then promoting it to the DC role following the conversion?

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Hello:

I am converting physical machines to VM sot hat we can consolidate our environment. The converter V5.1.0 Build1087880 fails at 71%, with a Warning:

so far, I have good progress on other physical machines except for this stubborn XP -X64 machine. We need to keep it for legacy reasons until there are replacement apps for all sw running on it (; This machine has SSD drive and no spinning HD

each time the conversion is able to start and complete the first on two drives. The GUI states its fine , but the log shows

When it gets to the second drive, I stops as it cant read some sector block.

I have run several apps to check and fix the D drive, but none find any issues. the XP-X64 machine has been restated after each test and re run. no issues are found on either drive

I have tried to run the converter without the D drive. It wont let me do so as it states that the D drive Is critical to the conversion and wont proceed without it

I have attached GUI screen shots and two logs files

Can anyone please help?

Is there is a way to find the root problem or proceed?

if windows cant find an issue with the D Drive why does the converter?

How can I uninstall the vCenter Standalone Converter?

My vCenter Standalone Converter 5.5 installation is corrupted on a Windows Server 2012 R2 server. Using the typical uninstall procedure through the Control Panel results in a "Could not stop service" message. This is the message I receive regardless of whether I try to uninstall, repair, or reinstall the application. Can someone direct me to a list of the various files and registry entries that need to be deleted to effectively remove the application to the point where I can reinstall it again? Thanks.

hello everyone,

I'm trying to convert a physical Windows 2008 R2 (SP1) to virtual, using Vmware vCenter Converter Standalone version 5.5 build 1362012, it fails at 1% (after around 40mins) with the following message

FAILED: Unable to create a VSS snapshot of the source volume(s). Error code:

2147754758 (0x80042306).

The windows systems has some LUNS (4 x various GB size each) from the SAN, being GUID Partition Table (GPT). I went through the wizard typically, selecting "powered on machine", destination "vmware workstation or other vmware virtual machine" selected vmware player 6.0.x and the target location being a LUN with 500GB space.

Now for data to copy I selected 3 of the LUNS (on which some database is residing) and put "Min size" option (but I have tried maintaining the size for different runs) to save on space.

Looking through the logs, i see the following errors

VMware converter - black screen on 2003ent startup

Hello,

I just did a P2V conversion on a physical Windows 2k3 R2 box and everything seemed to go fine with no errors and no warning messages. I reconfigured the VM and powered it on, but once powered on, it gives nothing but a black screen. I do not even see the VMware screen when its first powered on.

It just hangs there at a black screen with a little white dash line at the top, almost like it's frozen. All other VMs on this host are fine.

Has this ever happened to anyone, and does anyone know the fix for this?

Hello I am running VMconverter 5.5, I am trying to convert Windows server 2K3 server R2 Enterprise and I received a failure at 96% (So close!) . The failure I received was FAILED: An error occurred during the conversion:'converter.fault.FileIOFault'. It was cloning the 3rd drive, I am wondering if anyone can help me figure out where the issue is so I can start another conversion again. Attached are the logs.

converting remote centos linux physical machine to virtual machine on local windows pc

Hello,

I wish to convert a remote CentOS Linux physical machine to a Virtual Machine that I will store locally on my Windows PC. In the near future I would like to upload this VM to Amazon Web Services to use as a development environment.

I installed the VMware Converter Standalone (5.5.2) using the Local Installation option.

I chose the Convert Machine option and started using the wizard.

For the Source System step, under "Select source type" I chose Powered-on machine. Under "Specify the powered-on machine" I chose A remote machine and entered the correct IP and Port, user name, password, and OS Family (linux).

This is where I got stuck: under the Destination System step, I cannot choose a Destination type, so I am forced to provide VMware Infrastructure server details, but I don't know what this is referring to. It is asking for Server, User name, and Password. I don't wish to create a virtual machine on a different server, I would like to create the VM on my local hard drive. In documentation I saw online, there should be a Browse button so I can select where I want to create this VM.

I would appreciate help on this issue, and perhaps an explanation as to what is a VMware infrastructure virtual machine and how that may differ from what I want.

Attached is a screenshot of the step I am stuck on.

Thanks in advance!

Hi All,

I am trying to convert a physical Linux machine to our ESX host, on the converter i can connect to the box, set the options including giving the helper VM a static IP as there is not DHCP on the network and i start the convert, when i look at the console on the ESX i can see the machine start to convert, it asks for a username and password to login to the helper which i do (i fixed the converter worker file to allow this) but once it logs in the conversion just sites there at 1% and does nothing else/ is there something i am missing?

Thanks.

Problems Migrating Windows 2012 from Xen Server to ESXi

$

Hi,

I have been searching for info on my problem and can't seem to find anything.

I have a XenServer Pool, Version 6.5. I am using the VMWare Standalone Converter to attempt to migrate VMs over to ESXi 6.0. The linux VMs I did worked great, no issues.

The same can't be said for Windows Server 2012. The VMs migrate over but when they boot I am stuck on a couple of issues that I just can't get past:

- Constant restarts and BlueScreens trying to boot. Tried Windows repair with no luck. Sometime I can get into Safe Mode without any problems but it will not boot up into regular Windows.

- A BSOD caused by xen.sys that I was able to work around that then turned into no bootable drive.

I have tried combination of uninstalling the Xen Tools, not uninstalling, installing the VmWare tool, not installing, tried exporting OVF/OVA files from Xen, etc. Nothing seems to work. When I try to look back and remember what I did and didn't do my head starts hurting.

Getting to the point where I am almost ready give up and build the VMs from scratch in ESXi. It may take a week of 14 hours days but at least I can move on to other headaches.

Any help, links, guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

NTFS: deleting corrupt attribute record (128, $J)

I'm trying to do a really simple conversion from Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 to ESXi machine version 8. It seems to copy okay, but on the first VM boot it does an NTFS disk check and finds a bunch of errors.

All major services are stopped (APC Powerchute, Windows Deployment Services, Backup Exec Agent) and the antivirus uninstalled. chkdsk has been run on the source hardware and found no problems.

And yet after the migration I see this on first boot:

Checking file system on C:

The type of the file system is NTFS.

One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency. You may cancel the disk check, but it is strongly recommended that you continue.

There is absolutely NO WAY that I am going to use this resulting conversion as our primary organization file server. Such corruption of the NTFS partition data is completely unacceptable. I have no way of knowing what "file record 57484 / 57632" are and if they are critical to the operation of the server.

Though I expect I already know what the problem is, and I cannot solve it by using VMWare Converter running on the Windows I'm trying to migrate.

Trying to copy a file system while it is in use is just inviting disaster because as you're copying data, something before or after wherever the copy is occurring may change so that the final copy result ends up being corrupted.

The only way to really prevent this mid-copy data corruption is to copy the partitions when they are not in use.

Importing linked clones with snapshots into ESXi

Hi all,

Somewhat new to the details of VMWare, but have been a user for a while. I have a situation that is perplexing and hoping someone can help.

I have several virtual machines created on Workstation that I am importing into ESXi 6.0. Most of these are working out fine, but there are a few which are trickier. I have the following vm's:

-Master

-Sys1

-Sys2

-Sys3

-Sys4

-Sys5

Sys1-5 are linked clones of Master. To further complicate things, Sys1-5 all have multiple snapshot trees that I would like to preserve. So, for example, Sys1 would look like this:

Sys1

---Sys1a-snap1 -- Sys1a-snap2 -- Sys1a-snap3

---Sys1b-snap1 -- Sys1b-snap2

Is there any way to preserve all of this in the import, or is that just a pipe dream? I am using Standalone Converter, which seems to strip vm's of snapshots when it imports into ESXi. Thanks for any help!

ntoskrnl.exe is missing or corrupt

Hi,

I am trying to convert a Dell Poweredge server with VM converter to a VM. The process completed successully but when we power on the VM, we got error 'ntoskrnl.exe is missing or corrupt'.

We found that on the Dell server, there is a hidden partition named OEM and the boot.ini is pointing to partition(2) for the OS.

I attach the VM to another VM and check the boot.ini, it seems that the converter has already changed the boot.ini to partition (1). But the VM still could not find the ntoskrnel.exe which is under c:\winnt\system32

Does anyone know how to fix this??

Thanks.

I'm having absolutely same problem (except I use different linux distro), though dns suffix "fix" didn't help

I want to migrate a gentoo based linux system to a VMWare ESXi 4. I created the cloning task without problem.

The IP I set for the helper is public + I am able to register a DNS for it aswell (not sure it'd help)

I tried adding a dns suffix with a leading comma aswell as without it.

I am "FAILED at 3%"in the Log Highlights is following:

Error: Failed to clone the volume mounted on '/boot' from 'websrv04.primeinteractive.net'.

After exporting logs I found following information:

(converter.fault.CloneFault) {

dynamicType = <unset>,

faultCause = (vmodl.MethodFault) null,

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Buenos dias, estoy intentando virtualizar un Ubuntu Server 14.04.1 con un converter 5.5.1 y me da el siguiente error al 97%

FAILED: An error occurred during the conversion: 'GrubInstaller::InstallGrub: /usr/lib/vmware-converter/installGrub.sh failed with return code: 0, and message: Installing GRUB1 on (hd0)... [ Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. For the first word, TAB lists possible command completions. Anywhere else TAB lists the possible completions of a device/filename. ] grub> root (hd0,0) grub> setup (hd0) Checking if "/boot/grub/stage1" exists... no Checking if "/grub/stage1" exists... no Error 15:
File not found grub> '

Alguna idea?...

he actualizado el grub a la version GRUB2 y me falla igualmente, y he vuelto a bajar la version.
