P2V of disk with multiple partitions

Hello,

I'm working on a customer to convert his physical servers to vSphere 5.5 infrastructure.

I'm using converter 5.5 and have problems P2Ving one windows 2003 server with system disk with 2 partitions (C and E).

Physical Server

physical_disks.jpg

Disk 2: system disk with 2 partitions (C:, E: )

Vmware Converter

converter.jpg

I have converted in following way:

Partition C:, G:, F: together

Partition E: standalone (converter 5.5 doesn’t support conversion of multiple partitions on the same disk).

Result is I have one virtual machine with 3 vmdk (disks C, G, F) and another “fake” virtual machine with only one vmdk (disk E).

I have moved the disk E vmdk to the folder of the “real” vm and added it to the virtual machine.

Boot.ini file is as following:

timeout=30

default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windows Server 2003, Standard" /fastdetect

When I boot the virtual machine, I see the boot.ini menu, but the system doesn’t start and loop forever to boot menu.

Can anyone help me ?

thanks in advance

Best regards

Davide

Guide needed to convert XEN Linux VM to ESXi

Hi,

i am new in VMWare and i want to evaluate ESXi 6 to virtualize Windows and Linux Servers. At the moment we use Xen 4.4 on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. NOT XEN SERVER FROM CITRIX.

Now i installed ESXi 6 on a SUN FIRE 4140 which is running if you add ignoreHeadless=True on boot. Later on you can set this via Kernel permanently.

http://robwillis.info/2014/01/dell-cs24-esxi-5-5-install-stuck-relocating-modules-and-starting-up-the-kernel/

But thats not the Problem

I downloaded VMWare Converter Standalone and converted a Windows XEN VM to ESXI without problems. All works fine Thats pretty nice.

When i use this converter for a Linux XEN VM it is not working.

I see that it boots into grub, what is realy nice because a XEN Linux VM has no grub. So it seems like the converter is installing a grub and a non XEN Kernel. Seems so, i dont realy know for sure. But when i try to start the converted VM grub is stopping because root device sda1 is not found.

Can someone pls guide me to the prozess to convert a XEN Linux VM to ESXi 6 ?

Error message: ALERT: /dev/sda1 does not exist.

But when i boot the VM with knoppix and look with gparted it is definetly a /dev/sda1 !!!

Anyone succesfull with 6.0.0

I have been working all day on a single machine standard and clean MS Windows 7 64bit enterprise.

This OS is not uncommon but spells a world of trouble for VMWare Converter standalone 6.0.0.

To the point that makes me wonder if this production software. I'm just posting in the many many error messages I have seen throughout the day.

I managed to find workarounds for most of the issues untill I hit

FAILED: Unable to create '\\.\vstor2-mntapi20-shared-C37ABC700000F015000000000C00

This turns out to be a show stopper. There is no way of fixing this.

Which made me wonder. What OS is VMWare Converter supposed to support? It is not MS WIndows 7 for sure.

Is this maybe only for server OS software? Not desktop OS.

Unable to complete vCenter Converter agent installation on %server%. Errror code 1,603

I attemptred to convert a Windows 2000 Server SP4 server to a VMware ESXi server 4.1.

I started the process from a Windows XP PC running VMware-converter-all-4.3.0-292238 and I got the error "Unable to complete vCenter Converter agent installation on %server%. Errror code 1,603".

Reading in forums it looks that the right VMware Converter Standalone version is up to 4.1: is it correct?

To solve the problem I installed VMware converter standalone 3.x on the Windows 2000 box, but I don't think it is the best choice.

Can anybody please help understandiong what is the right way to convert a Windows 2000 server?

Can I do a P2V on a LIVE file server, and delay the switchover?

Hi,

May sound like a really simple question, but I can't afford to get it wrong.

We have Windows 2003 R2 servers, which are file servers, with 100 users connected, who rely on these servers to be up during work hours. They are critical machines, and we can't really afford ANY downtime, a few seconds is fine as long as nobody notices, and that any open files that people are working on do not get lost.

Because the server has upto 1TB of data on it, we can't really estimate how long it will take to do the P2V. So we'd ideally like to start this in a morning, then perhaps do the switchover at the end of our working day, so as to not upset any of our users.

Can we do this? Can we do a P2V, and then re-run the process to find any changes that may of happened between it finishing the 1st run?

Basically, we can't really sit and watch it run all the way through, then make the switch when it's finished, because we have no way of knowing if it will finish outside working hours or not, and obviously we can't wait all night either!

We have at least 4 servers to do like this, any ideas really appreciated.

Many thanks, Alan

FAILED: An error occurred during the conversion: 'The operation experienced a network error'

Hello all,

I have a problem converting one of my existing images and adding it to an ESXi host. I am trying to convert a Windows 2008 R2 64-bit machine.

Using the standalone converter, I connect to the .vmx file and the process starts with no problems. I leave a ping to the datastore and the ESXi host running throughout the process and the connection does not fail.

However, when the process is 17% of the way through, i receive the FAILED: An error occurred during the conversion: 'The operation experienced a network error' message and the connection fails.

I have tried this process using another machine image (.vmx) to the same server - using the exact same procedure, and the conversion succeeds with no errors.

Is there something I need to do with the ESXi host or the vmx (vmdx HDDs) to get this process to work. I have retried the process 5 times now and get to the exact same point and size in GB of the vmdx files when it fails.

Any help would be gratefully received and I have some experiance with ESXi but don't consider myself an expert so I apologise in advance for any stupidity on my part.

I have attached the log files from the ESXi (these have not been edited as these are just test systems)

Regards and thanks in advance.

Hi,

I am trying to create a virtual image of my Alienware laptop however I am getting the following error:

FAILED: Unable to create a VSS snapshot of the source volume(s). Error code: 2147754766 (0x8004230E).

I have done the usual google for this error and all the results state it could be due to volumes which are FAT, however I can confirm after checking Disk Management that non of my volumes are FAT, they're all NTFS. My OS is Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit.

Any help would be much appreciated!!

Thank you,

Blue Screen on P2V - Screen Shot included

I've got six identical Proliant DL380 series servers running W2k3 Standard SP2.  I've been able to virtualize five of them without incident.  The last machine is the problem child.  I've attempted the P2V seven times.  It continues to blue screen within 5 seconds of getting the login spash screen.  I've tried several variations in the P2V wizard, all without successs. Reducing CPUs, keeping them the same, Thin Provisioning the disk....  I'm literally at my wits end.  And for a half-wit, it didn't take me long to get there.....  I've worked with our internal VMWare guru and he's stumped as well.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also changed controller type to LSI Logic SAS and BusLogic Parallel.  Same problems each time.

Hi,

I am getting the following error when using Converter Server to import Hyper-V and Powered-on machines - Permission to perform this operation was denied

I have installed Converter directly on the machine that was getting the same issue and it imports fine!

I have disabled UAC on Converter Server, reinstalled it, built a new VM and installed Converter again!

There is a few errors in the logs

2013-11-04T14:21:04.551+13:00 [02076 error 'Ufa.HTTPService'] Failed to read request; stream: <io_obj p:0x01fd94ec, h:-1, <pipe '\\.\pipe\vmware-converter-server-soap'>, <pipe '\\.\pipe\vmware-converter-server-soap'>>, error: class Vmacore::TimeoutException(Operation timed out)

I have disabled SSL on the Converter Server worker process but this didn't work

I have 30 Hyper-V VMs to import and cannot do this one by one!

Convert Oracle OVM VM's to OVF/OVA Format

$

First off you have to understand I just inherited a Oracle OVM environment. I am more of a VMware ESXi guy so I know how ESXi operates. I was recently told (yesterday) that we do not have a backup and restore solution in place for the Oracle environment, so this includes the Oracle OVM manager environment, several production and non-production VMs as well as our Oracle OEM environment which is currently configured as an Oracle VM. I have already opened a ticket with Oracle for a real "Certified" Oracle backup software solution, but so far this request has fallen on deaf ears.

From what I can see, Oracle Virtual Manager (OVM) is based on the older RHEL-like Xen format (with some unique naming nomenclatures) for virtual machine (VM) and disk allocation. As seen below, this is an example of what a current Oracle VM configuration looks like and how convoluted it is for figuring out where everything resides. If you notice the disk images are NOT named in any way back to the actual VM image (i.e. myserver.xvda), but more of a UUID format. Oracle's version of Xen is just plain out nasty.

So my question: Is there a way under VMware Converter to change a Oracle VM format into an OVF/OVA without having to do the old intermediary Virtual Box conversion steps (i.e. How do I convert VirtualBox files to work with VMWare Workstation? - TechRepublic)?

Getting errors Reached Maximum Volume Snapshots trying to convert XP system hotcloning to VMDK with Converter latest ver

$

Hi I keep getting this error re  Reached Max Volume Snapshots trying to convert XP system hotcloning to VMDK with Converter latest ver 5.5.1. Error causes conversion of physical machine to fail at 1%.

I am trying to convert a drive with a dual boot XP -2 Xps on it  to a VMDK for VMware Player 6- also has a C partition with original W98SE that no longer use.  The C partition has the boot ini boot loader for the dual Xps which are on J and I partitions.  Other partitions on drive cloning together (need them together as Xps access these drives at boot are: D Programs, E: Docs and Shared (has user logon profiles for XP) and F, G and H (contains VirtualPC Virtual HD of 98SE) partitions.

I am running a chkdsk /f /r on all partitions and have deleted system volume snapshots (from system restore) and turned off system restore in case that is issue.  I also tried turning off firewall as told in manual and stopping several 3rd party services from running.  Not using any extra options when cloning.  Target is a 1 Tb free space (more than partitions/drive copying) on an external USB "3" drive.

I tried also with just J and not I Partition selected with others and same error so dual systems prob not issue -though not sure if both will be bootable in Vm together via boot ini choosing as have at moment on physical machine.  Anyone know if this will work still as dual boot on VM or should I be cloning each with C separately as don't want J or I to become C as their drive letters are associated with many years of program installs don't want to redo.  Not sure if can attach these at same time to be able to boot either if on separate drives in VM and still have access to all other partitions from both Xps - anyone know how to do this best?

Also re my error -mainly this is what need fixed so can get this done -or will it be ok to do this converting coldclone via Windows 8.1 I have on a separate drive -however C drive I need shows up as V as W81 is C on host.  Will this allow still a dual boot VM or at least one of Xps to be bootable from V drive -maybe if I move it up to C 1st partition position when copying to VMDK?  Please keep in mind I do not have Workstation and only will use VmWare Player 6 or try in VirtualBox or Hyper-V on Windows 8.1 Pro  host  if VmWare Player fails.
