A general system error occurred: unknown internal error

$

Hi Guys,

recently I have setup two ESX 4.1 on two IBM 3650m3 servers. I also have setup a cluster HA with two esx, without DRS (purchased essential plus licence). Until now all is working fine, but something goes wrong when I try to use Vmware Converter plugin at VCenter or Converter Standalone on VM to convert.

My scenario:

ClusterHA with:

- esx1

- esx2

- vcenter 4.1 (on win200864bit VM into the cluster) with vcenter converter plugin 4.2

- vcenter converter standalone converter 4.3.0 (on windows machines)

Also I have an older vmware server 2.0 with 15 VMs to migrate into the new ESX4.1 farm.

No issues I encountered when migrating old VMs with V2V conversion from converter plugin (only linux operating systems), always with "powered on" procedure.

Now, it's time to convert only 2 windows xp 32bit vm:

A) V2V powered machine conversion with plugin from vcenter doesn't work and during deploy agent (or view source details) show me an error : Unable to contact specified host.

I'm sure that isn't a network problem, all required ports are open and tested.

B) I tried also to install vcenter converter standalone on windows machine. In this case, all works fine until Summary Review conversione parameters. If click finish to start conversion, in vcenter I can see create and then delete vm tasks, but in converter standalone I get a "A general system error occurred: unknown internal error"

C) Another way to convert this VMs is shutdown vm, from vcenter source type virtual machine, select vmx file located in a network path, view source detail --> Unable to obtain hardware information for selected machine.

Logs for case A)

Converter::Client::Gui::Common::DiagnosticDataProvider::DownloadSourceDiagnosticFile - Using last known source computer spec:

(converter.ComputerSpec) {

   dynamicType = ,

   },

}

Logs for case B)

Unable to submit job: vmodl.fault.SystemError

Submit job failed: A general system error occurred: unknown internal error

Next/Finish failed: A general system error occurred: unknown internal error

Logs for case C)

Converter::Client::Gui::Common::DiagnosticDataProvider::SetLastKnownSource - Setting last known source:

(converter.ComputerSpec) {

   dynamicType = ,

      configFilePath = "
10.192.0.11\vm1\Virtual Machine_1\Virtual Machine.vmx",

      password = ,

      networkUsername = "test",

      networkPassword = (not shown),

      type = "vmwareVM",

   },

}

Cannot query source HW info: vmodl.fault.SystemError

Can someone help me?

Thanks

ubuntu p2v - converter fails generic error

Hello,

I'm new to vmware and I'm trying to teach myself. I have ubuntu 11.10 running on a spare laptop with linux converter server 4.0.1. I have the Converter Standalone Client 4.0.1 installed on a windows 7 machine. I have an ESXi server cluster running 4.1.0 that I'm a superadmin on. I'm trying to use the windows machine to convert the ubuntu machine from physical to virtual. I go the through the wizard and everything looks fine. I click start, it starts, and then stops and disconnects with a very generic error "Error: Unable to create the virtual machine 'ubuntu-test-machine'." no other reason given.

Can someone point me in the right direction? Either documentation is limited or my googling needs work because I'm having a hard time finding info on this. It's either outdated or a little to vague for a beginner. Point me in the right direction and I'm sure I can figure it out.

I appreciate any help. Screenshots attached.

Hi,

I'm using Converter 4.3.0 standalone to convert a physical machine with Windows Server 2003 SP2 to a virtual machine on a ESXi 4.01 host.

When I start the task, after few seconds, I recevice this error: FAILED: Unable to create a VSS snapshot of the source volume(s). Error code: 2147754774 (0x80042316).

Same idea about the problems ?

Unable to complete vCenter Converter agent installation on %server%. Errror code 1,603

I attemptred to convert a Windows 2000 Server SP4 server to a VMware ESXi server 4.1.

I started the process from a Windows XP PC running VMware-converter-all-4.3.0-292238 and I got the error "Unable to complete vCenter Converter agent installation on %server%. Errror code 1,603".

Reading in forums it looks that the right VMware Converter Standalone version is up to 4.1: is it correct?

To solve the problem I installed VMware converter standalone 3.x on the Windows 2000 box, but I don't think it is the best choice.

Can anybody please help understandiong what is the right way to convert a Windows 2000 server?

Where is the Vsphere 5 Converter Cd (coldclone) ?

As you know vsphere 5 is ready and we can buy it and install in our environment. And as you know some our phisical servers has a EFI BIOS. In Vsphere 4 we can't install EFI Bıos supported Vms, but in Vsphere 5 we can choice EFI BIOS or Basic BIOS. So Vsphere 5 Released and we want to P2v our phisical EFI BIOS servers but where is the Vsphere 5 coldclone cd? Isn't released yet? I can find just standalone converter but it doesn't support EFı BIOS while operating system is working. ANd also I can't find Vcenter Converter too.

Can someone tell me where is the Vsphere 5 Coldclone converter? The platform is ready but where is the p2v tools? If isn't ready why you relased vpshere 5?

Converter 5.0 error: "Crypto exception: error:02001005"

$

I'm trying to convert a running physical Windows Server 2003 machine using Converter 5.0. The target is a VMware Server 2.x box.

When I launch the wizard and enter credentials for the powered-on machine, I'm using its IP address and an account in its domain (IT). The VMware Server machine is in a different domain and forest.

After I put in the credentials, I get the following error:

A general system error occurred: Crypto Exception: error:02001005:system library:fopen:Input/output error:unable to load C:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware vCenter Converter Standalone\ssl\rui.crt

Here's what I've tried so far:

1. Verified that the target rui.crt file exists at the specified path and that the domain account I'm using to run the converter has full access to it.

2. Running the converter using the Windows 2003 "Run As" command, specifying the domain admin account I'm currently logged in with and unchecking "Run this program with restricted access"

3. Running with "Run As" using a different domain admin account

4. Removing and reinstalling the converter

The conversion starts normally if I run the client from the machine hosting VMware Server and let it connect to the agent on the source machine, but I'd like to know why the client fails when run directly on the source, as I have several of these machines to convert. Any suggestions would be welcome.

Converter Failed: Unable to create

Hi All,

Firstly, I am a newbie to VMware so apologies if I appear ignorant on the topic.

I am trying to create a VM of my local machine using VMWare vCenter Converter Standalone v5.0.0

Unfortunately I keep getting to 98% complete and it fails with the following status:

FAILED: Unable to create '\\.\vstor2-mntapi10-shared-31F59A9D00001000000000000F000000\$Reconfig$'

I have no idea what this message means. According to the log highlights it was "processing the reconfiguration datastore" at the time. I have exported the log file as per attached.

Can anyboby point me in the right direction?

Many thanks,

Paul.

Hello:

I am converting physical machines to VM sot hat we can consolidate our environment. The converter V5.1.0 Build1087880 fails at 71%, with a Warning:

so far, I have good progress on other physical machines except for this stubborn XP -X64 machine. We need to keep it for legacy reasons until there are replacement apps for all sw running on it (; This machine has SSD drive and no spinning HD

each time the conversion is able to start and complete the first on two drives. The GUI states its fine , but the log shows

2013-08-11T09:00:00.782-04:00 [02748 warning 'Default'] Disk number 1 has been skipped because of errors while reading dynamic disks header or LDM database is corrupted

When it gets to the second drive, I stops as it cant read some sector block.

I have run several apps to check and fix the D drive, but none find any issues. the XP-X64 machine has been restated after each test and re run. no issues are found on either drive

I have tried to run the converter without  the D drive. It wont let me do so as it states that the D drive Is critical to the conversion and wont proceed without it

I have attached GUI screen shots and two logs files

Can anyone please help?

Is there is a way to find the root problem or proceed?

if windows cant find an issue with  the D Drive why does the converter?

Hi All,

I have a Laptop with

     6 GB RAM,

     300 GB HDD,

     2 CPU (1 socket and 2 cores)

     Windows 7 64 bit OS.

I am having external HDD (2TB capacity with 460 GB free space) which will have the destination folder for the VM.

When I try to convert this using  VMware converter standalone I am getting this following error.

"FAILED: The VSS snapshots cannot be stored because there is not enough space on the source volumes or because the source machine does not have any NTFS volumes. Error code: 2147754783 (0x8004231F)."

I have attached the error log for your reference.

Thanks in advance to all for helping to overcome this issue.

Win7 64bit | SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED

Hello,

I am trying to convert my Win 8.1 64bit Machine to a running VM.

I am using vCenter Converter Standalone 5.5.3 and VM Workstation 10.0.4

I had a problem with my PCI Devices so I followed this instruction:Re: VMware opens and quickly closes a virtual machine

Now I am getting a BSOD while loading windows with following message: SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED

Trying to get it running on two machines: HP 2760p and Dell D630. I heard it can be a driver problem so I tried to boot in failsafemode.Same Error. What can I do about this?

Thank You and sorry for my bad english.

Marko

P2V of a Windows 7 OEM Workstation

$

Hi,

It is requested by my manager to perform a P2V of a Windows 7 workstation running OEM license.

After the P2V, windows license is not genuine and need another license key to reactivate (We have done this part).

Then we run SYSPREP but we get a fatal error.  We just wonder whether it would be a problem if we use the VM (i.e. P2V one) and physical workstation running Windows 7 for a while (Both of them have been joined to AD) ?   Do we need to remove the physical workstation from AD as SYSPREP fails ?

Thanks

Converting V2V Error

I am trying to do a V2V conversion from a 5.5 Host to a temp 5.5 Host. Everytime I convert the machine it gets to 15% and fails with the message "FAILED: A general system error occurred: TaskInfo indicates error but no exception is specified." I've tried reviewing the logs but not really anything sticking out to me. I have attached those to this thread. If someone could help it would be greatly appreciated!

How to schedule weekly P2V's?

We have  newer physical server that for DR purposes, I want to have in my virtual environment.  The physical server is less than 2 years old and we depreciate over 5 years, so I don't want to get rid of the physical server just yet.  I'm looking for some software or some way to P2V this server on a weekly basis.  From what I've read, I can't do this with CLI.  Please advise.

Faster alternative to VMWare vCenter Converter Standalone?

$

0

We're using  VMWare vCenter Converter Standalone to create virtual machines. It takes about 3 hours for a 30 GB HD machine. Since we have upwards of 70 platforms to create, we'd like to purchase something faster. Is something faster available? I can't seem to find any information on the VMWare site that indicates this.

Apologies if this is something I should be asking a VMWare salesperson, but after 3 inappropropriate voicemail redirects and 2 separated disconnections, I've given up. VMWare's voicemail system seems to be designed to prevent any meaningful communication with anyone at VMWare.

Thanks in advance for any help,

Ian

RHEL 4 machine converted fine, but get kernel panic when I start the VM

$

So I have a bunch of old Red Hat 4 servers that I need to convert to VMs.   I am using the standalone converter 5.0 and the VMs range from Red Hat version 2.6.9.-11 to 2.6.9-42.   Some of the machines I can P2V with out any issues but a majority of them fail with

mount: error 6 mounting ext3
mount: error 2 mounting none
switchroot: mount failed: 22
umount /initrd/dev failed: 2 (see pic for more details)

error.jpg

So I get a 100% complete when I use the Converter but when I boot up the VM I get that error.   I have followed the directions from http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1002402 but I still not having any luck.   I made changes to /etc/fstab, /boot/grub/grub.conf, /boot/grub/device.map etc...   I am also having issues with rebuilding the ramdisk.   I ran the command with the existing version on the drive but I get an error about about no modules found.   I have also found another article saying the version of TAR might be an issue so i've upgrade the version to 1.14-15 and re-ran converter and it still failing.   Anyone have any ideas what is wrong?    I am windows admin with some linux background so please go detailed on the linux commands.

What is strange to me is that I know I'm using the correct credentials and my account is in the local admin group for the target machine.

Note these two, seemingly conflicting, log entries:

2014-02-19T08:05:08.856-08:00 [06688 info 'Default'] [user,874] Successfully authenticated user ZOOMSYSTEMS\Peter.Bollwerk-priv from ::1

Also found this entry in the gui log:

2014-02-19T08:11:55.909-08:00 [02612 error 'wizardController'] Must be administrator to access physical computer

What am I missing here?

I have verified I have admin rights on both the target and source computers.

I am using the correct credentials.

I am using the Standalone Converter 5.5.

First, sorry for my por English.

I have a problem. On having turned P2V on a servant the following message appears:

Phisical Server: Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1

"Permission to perform this operation was denied"

After many attempts I check the logs and I found the following thing:

SSL error message is The remote host certificate has these problems:

* The host name used for the connection does not match the subject name on the host certificate.

* The host certificate chain is not complete.

Thanks.
