Convert to ESXi and store to disk?

$

I am wondering if it's possible to convert a Workstation 6.0 file to esxi and have it stored on a usb hard drive.

The reason I'm asking is that converter is taking forever to convert and upload an image I have, but if I import it directly into the datastore it easily uploads it 10x faster.

I used a MOA boot CD to take a cold clone for testing, and wasn't aware it was in a format that ESXi did not understand. I used the import to datastore feature and just discovered it won't boot (error message mentions make sure it's been converted/imported.)

I think it was uploading a 50 GB file at 1 mbit through Converter, but I can upload it directly at 60-70 mbit, so I was hoping to just do the conversion to local disk and upload the image afterwards.

If you need more info I can try to provide it. (ESXi 5.0)

Hello,

I am trying to use Converter Standalone 5.0 to do a P2V conversion of a Windows XP workstation.  The process got 98% of the way through, and then I received "Unable to find the system volume, reconfiguration is not possible.".  Can anyone help?  I desparately need to get this VM image out to a vendor for troubleshooting an unrelated issue!

Before P2V what precautions i have to take??

Virtualize Zimbra Collaboration Server Network Edition

Due to some recent reliability problems with our Zimbra server, we have decided it would be best to virtualize the current installation. Has anyone successfully done this with the vCenter Converter. If so, are there any pitfalls we need to be aware of. I realize there is a Zimbra VM that can be deployed, but, it is an older version than the current server deployment (8.0.4 as opposed to 8.0.5). Additionally, with the appliance download, there is no upgrade path, except for spinning up a new VM and going through the disaster recovery steps to transition from the older to the newer, and that is not something that anyone would want to do. It takes too long, and it's too easy to make a mistake with the multitude of steps that are necessary.

Any insight from any of the vMware masters is much appreciated.

Preferred P2V solution (vCenter Converter or VEEAM)

So I'm analyzing and getting ready to convert a provided list of physical servers to vmware VMs and wondering what is the best solution to use. Do I use vCenter Converter or VEEAM? I want to know what most people are using out there and any pros and cons with each of them.

Thanks in advance.

A General System Error Occur Invalid Fault for windows 2008 using VMware Converter

Hi Guys,

I am trying to convert VMs from Hyper V to ESXI and i am running into this error "A General System Error Occur: Invalid Fault"

I am running vmware esxi server 5.5.0 build 1623387 and vmware vsphere converter 5.5.1 build 1682692. I am trying to convert a windows 2008 server r2 machine.

I have been doing some reading on the internet and have not been able to find a solution but have found a lot of people having these issues

My logs are attached

Estimate completion time for P2V

Hi experts,

I'll be doing P2V migrations using the VMware standalone converter 5.5 tool for a couple of physical servers. Plan to install the converter tool on the source machine itself and convert to target vCenter server with ESXi hosts (all running 5.0) connected to EMC SAN using RAID10 datastores.

what I want to know is - one of the physical servers has 500GB of total disk capacity (C,D and some SAN volumes) however the space utilized is at 140GB. If I convert using thin provisioning for destination disk type, I know the tool uses block based copying (uses file based copying if disk size is reduced) but will the tool copy only the real data (140GB) and is the time required for cloning based on 140GB or the 500GB total disk size of the source server. Cause if I estimate the transfer speed avg as 10MB/s it should take around 3-4 hours to copy only data (140GB) however if it does block based cloning of source server disks totaling 500GB (including empty space) then the time required (approx) could take a whopping 14 hours.....

Question, does block based cloning using thin provisioning as destination disk type copy the entire source disk (including empty space) or does it only copy the used space / actual data??

Converting (P2V) a legacy Windows 98 client

I need to perform the P2V conversion of a legacy Windows 98 client.

The client hosts legacy applications that must run on a Windows 98 box.

I attempted converting it using Converter 3.x but it looks to be unable to install the agent.

Should I install Converter on the Windows 98 box itself?

Should I use any other procedure, maybe based on a third party backup solution?

Suggestions, pointers and hints welcome...

Hello,

In trying to do a P2V conversion I am getting a very weird kernel error. I am using the 5.1 standalone converter. The error is:

FAILED: An error occurred during the conversion: ' * got kernel major revision as ERROR:
kernel version has to be in format 2.6.*, version 2.6.32-358.6.1.el6.x86_64 is not supported (return code 1)'

I have searched and found no information on this error. I have added a screenshot, any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

I'm using vCenter Converter Standalone v4.01 (build 161434) to convert a MS Virtual PC powered-on machine to VMWare.  It, annoyingly, gets to 98% and then fails with:

"FAILED: A general system error occurred: SQL_CANTOPEN: unable to open database file"

Why?!  What database file!

Thanks

Hello there,

I'm trying to run a live P2V using vmware converter standalone 6.0.0 running on the actually physical machine to be converted and after selecting the ESXi 5.5 destination I get "The destination does not support EFI firmware". The physical machine is running Windows 2008 R2 standard x64 and is a System x3550 M2. Ive searched the internet but cant seem to find anyone with the same issue.

Does anyone know if there is a workaround for this issue?

Many thanks

not enough space on the source volumes... Error code: 2147754783 (0x8004231F).

VMWare team, please instead of showing the error and cancelling conversion of the physical machine, offer "Do you want to continue conversion anyway?" option.

I'm trying to converta physical desktop to NAS using network path (\\bnas4\vms), and getting the error. The volume has 6TB of free space but the Converted cannot determine the free space.

Please fix this!
