Hello guys,

I'm trying to convert a Linux VM from Hyper-V to ESXi using Converter 6.1, After it creates a target VM and boot with helper ISO, it sits on a login prompt asking for username and password.

Can anyone help on this please.

Dear Team,

while doing v2v from one esx host to another, I m getting this error "Converter - Warning The destination guest OS cannot be reconfigured. It may not boot properly." following are the details

converted version :- 4.2.0 build 254483

Source ESX Host :- 4.0.0 build 208167

Destination ESX host: 3.5.0 build 110268

How can I uninstall the vCenter Standalone Converter?

My vCenter Standalone Converter 5.5 installation is corrupted on a Windows Server 2012 R2 server.  Using the typical uninstall procedure through the Control Panel results in a "Could not stop service" message.  This is the message I receive regardless of whether I try to uninstall, repair, or reinstall the application.  Can someone direct me to a list of the various files and registry entries that need to be deleted to effectively remove the application to the point where I can reinstall it again?  Thanks.

Anyone have a script to remove all the HP/Compaq agents after conversion?

Hi,

With both old school P2V and the new converter tool, we have to uninstall about 10 HP agents/tools from "Add/Remove Programs", manually uninstall the HP  Network Configuration Utility, and delete two registry keys that "Add/Remove Programs" does not remove after the conversion is completed.

Does anyone have any sweet scripts or tools to do all this automatically?

Thanks

RHEL 4 machine converted fine, but get kernel panic when I start the VM

So I have a bunch of old Red Hat 4 servers that I need to convert to VMs.   I am using the standalone converter 5.0 and the VMs range from Red Hat version 2.6.9.-11 to 2.6.9-42.   Some of the machines I can P2V with out any issues but a majority of them fail with

mount: error 6 mounting ext3
mount: error 2 mounting none
switchroot: mount failed: 22
umount /initrd/dev failed: 2 (see pic for more details)

error.jpg

So I get a 100% complete when I use the Converter but when I boot up the VM I get that error.   I have followed the directions from http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1002402 but I still not having any luck.   I made changes to /etc/fstab, /boot/grub/grub.conf, /boot/grub/device.map etc...   I am also having issues with rebuilding the ramdisk.   I ran the command with the existing version on the drive but I get an error about about no modules found.   I have also found another article saying the version of TAR might be an issue so i've upgrade the version to 1.14-15 and re-ran converter and it still failing.   Anyone have any ideas what is wrong?    I am windows admin with some linux background so please go detailed on the linux commands.

Hi,

I'm trying to virtualize a Windows 2008 R2 server.

it fails at 97% with the following error : "Unable to proceed since the sysprep parameters provided are not correct"

I tried to run converter "as administrator" but I got the same error twice.

Here are the logs export.

Thanks for your help !

Converter 5 does not recognize LVM partition on Oracle Linux 6

I've got two physical servers running Oracle Linux Server release 6.3 64-bit.  They each have a /boot partition that is ext4 and the rest on an LVM partition:

/dev/mapper/vg_cleveland-lv_root /                       ext4    defaults        1 1
UUID=3d37688e-305a-4974-9bb7-f02232b78790 /boot                   ext4    defaults        1 2
/dev/mapper/vg_cleveland-lv_swap swap                    swap    defaults        0 0
tmpfs                   /dev/shm                tmpfs   defaults        0 0
devpts                  /dev/pts                devpts  gid=5,mode=620  0 0
sysfs                   /sys                    sysfs   defaults        0 0
proc                    /proc                   proc    defaults        0 0

vCenter Converter is only recognizing the /boot partition in the "Data to copy" section "Select volumes to copy".

If I go forward the conversion fails when trying to reconfigure the VM.  I've looked through the user guide and googled a bit but I can't seem to find why the ext4 LVM partition is not being recognized by Converter 5.

VMware Converter helper VM Login Prompt

Hello guys,

I'm trying to convert a Linux VM from Hyper-V to ESXi using Converter 6.1, After it creates a target VM and boot with helper ISO, it sits on a login prompt asking for username and password.

Can anyone help on this please.

Linux P2V issue: unable to query the live Linux source machine

We're trying to convert some servers in a remote datacentre; the owners have given us SSH access through the firewall and even supplied the root password (I can confirm this by actually SSH-ing into the boxes, so that's definitely working).  However, the actual conversion process is going nowhere near as smoothly.  Every time we try, the conversion process refuses to start, telling us that it was "unable to query the live Linux source machine"

Some details:

Converter version: 6.1.1 (as Administrator), running on a Windows 10 PC (I've tried converter 4.x and 5.x as well, though)

Source: Dell box running RHEL 5.11

Destination: vSphere 5.1 cluster (not that we actually get that far)

I've checked what seem to be the usual causes for this; /tmp is writable, there are no "echo" statements in anyone's .bashrc, and root has a proper shell (/bin/bash), and still no joy.  Can anyone suggest what we might have missed?  I've attached the logs from the failed conversion as well.

Thanks,

Ian.

repeated "Found New Hardware" notifications in imported VM

Hi All

I've imported a WinXP VM from a standalone ESXi3.5 host, into an ESXI4 host which is managed by vCenter.  I did this by right-clicking a host in vSphere client, and selecting 'import machine...'.

The import goes ahead with no errors.

On power-on of the imported VM, I get repeated 'Found New Hardware Wizard' notifications for a device "PCI standard PCI-to-PCI bridge".

This occurs both before and after the VMTools have been upgraded.

No hardware changes/customisation of the VM has been done.

Is this a bug in the version of the hardware version/converter ? I've read about similar issues with Fusion but the suggested fixes there don't seem to work here.

Any advice appreciated.

Ian

Latest Converter corrupts XP boot files

$

I had a newly imported XP vmdk (imported with dd)
When booting it inside a VM it bluescreened with a 7B - so everything was fine.
Then I used Converter 6.1 with the "configure machine" option.
Result was that the perfectly booting vmdk now hangs with a white cursor in the upper left of the screen.
Checking with a LiveCD showed that the boot partition still had the bootable flag.
So the conclusion is that the current Converter corrupts the boot.ini or the ntldr.
As a workaround I now boot from a custom made boot floppy - but that really should not be necessary.

Is it possible to specify destinaton host as the local machine when performing P2V using vcenter standalone converter?

I cannot find a way specifying the local machine to save the VM for my remote Linux machine. Is there a way? I don't have a ESXi server.

Thanks.

I've been trying for hours, but it keeps failing.

Error in the logfile; NBD_ERR_NETWORK_CONNECT' (error code:2338)

I already tried;

- Downgrading and updating vSphere Converter.

- Changing my hosts file so it has the source and destination.

- Reboot my machines.

- Converting to VMware Workstations works! But when I import on the new ESX fails.

- Enabling and disabling 'Use proxy mode'.

Please see attached logfile.

For privacy reasons I renamed the hostnames, thank you for your understanding.

Who can help me in the good direction? Thanks!

Hi,

is it possible to convert a not official supported Linux distribution, or just the few mentioned in the manual (CentOS, RedHat, SLES, Ubuntu)?

In my case I really  need to convert a Open Suse Leap 42.1.

I wonder if there is any possibility to, because I read Leap is based on SLES.

Thanks,

Janine

Migration of SUSE Linux VMs from HyperV to ESXi

I have SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12.x virtual machines currently running from HyperV2012 R2, with UEFI Firmware Interface.

As per the VMWARE converter user guide, its not listed as supported. SLES 12 is not listed at all, and as for the UEFI in SLES 11 version itself is listed not supported in the userguide. Would that mean it would not support the offline migrations as well ?

any feedback is much appreciated.

Hanging on "Verifying Task parameters"

Hello I'm having difficulty converting one of my VMs from a Hyper-V server.  I'm able to connect to the Hyper-V and see the Vm list.  When I select SVR4 and click next I get a notice saying "Verifying Task Parameters"  This goes on and on and on.  Last time I let it sit for almost an hour before I killed it.  Also, if I click "View Source Details"I get "Retrieving source machine information..." and also spins and spin but does nothing.  I'm not seeing anything crazy in the logs, but I may not be looking in the right place.

I have already converted a VM off of this Hyper-V host today but for some reason just this one is giving me troubles.  Any ideas??

I'm a new user of VCSC. I just installed VCSC in order to import a windows XP virtual PC image into vmware player. A screen capture of the error is attached.

The PC is a stand-alone laptop running windows 7 professional. I use it for for running some legacy applications. There is no domain controller. The account on the laptop did not have a password at the time that I installed VCSC. When I attempted to import the Windows XP Virtual PC image, the error appeared. I thought it may have been because there was no password on the account, so I added one. That made no difference. I did a repair on the VCSC installation to see if that would cause the credentials to be changed. That also made no difference.

The name of the laptop is LATITUDED830 and the account name is Daryl, corresponding to the credentials in the screen capture.

I'm stuck. I have no idea how to get past this error. I'd appreciate some help.

Hi,

I'm having an issue converting a Windows 7 machine to a virtual machine running on VMWare ESXi 6.0. I'm using vCenter Converter 6.1.1.

The conversion stops at 98% with an "Internal error." I can see the VM has been created on the ESXi server, but when attempting to start the VM, it goes into a boot loop failing at the "Starting Windows" logo, so I'm thinking it has something to do the configuration after the conversion. This is what I see in the vmware-converter-server log around the time of the failure:

I've attached that log as well as the ConverterDiag log. I'm thinking the "faultCause = (vmodl.MethodFault) null, reason - "Internal error" " is somehow related the "Failed to read request" and "Vmacore::TimeoutException" error message, but I'm not 100% sure. I've been trying to research this issue, but cannot find anything in Google to resolve this issue.

I have tried using SCSI LSI Logic as well as SATA (which is what is in the machine) to no avail.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated! Thank you very much!
