Detected a write error during the cloning of volume (type: 1, code: 25)

I am in the process of trying to convert a machine to a VM using vCenter Converter and cannot get the conversion to work. It always fails at 1% or 2% with the error in the title of this post. The full error is: FAILED: An error occurred during the conversion: 'BlockLevelVolumeCloneMgr::CloneVolume: Detected a write error during the cloning of volume \WindowsBitmapDriverVolumeId=[98-87-BA-25-00-00-80-0C-00-00-00-00]. Error: 401 (type: 1, code: 25)'

I'm trying to convert the local machine to VMWare Workstation 11/12. The source machine is Windows 7 Pro x64. I've recently done two conversions just like this one from similar source hardware which both converted with no issues, so I have no idea what could be wrong here.

I've done some searching online and have tried many suggestions from similar cases but none have worked. Here's everything I've tried:

  • Run vCenter Converter as a different (admin) user
  • Disable SSL using the XML file in %programdata%
  • Stop all SQL services before converting
  • Change destination disk size to a custom value
  • Ensure no other disks are being converted - the machine only has a single drive in it. That drive has two partitions - the system partition and the main data partition.
  • Run chkdsk to make sure there are no issues with the source drive - none detected

I can't find a solution that seems to work for me, so I'm hoping someone here may be able to help. I'm attaching the exported logs for reference. Any help is appreciated - thanks in advance!

Converting a Windows Server 2008 R2 server - disk issues

I am attemping to P2V a physical Windows Server 2008 R2 server hosted by an HP DL360 server using the latyest version ov VMware Converter Standalone.

Conversion fails as it looks to be unable to recognize the 100MB hidden partition hosted by the physical drive together with the C:\ partition.

How can I bypass the problem?

Is there any trick I should implement?

Hi All,

I see a error when doing P2V using converter 5.5.0 (An error occurred while opening a virtual disk. Verify that the converter server and the running source machines have a network access to the source and destination ESX/ESXi hosts).

Any suggestions are welcomed.

Target is vCenter here and from there selected ESX host where the VM gets created and then deleted.

Logs attached.

Ajay

P2V of disk with multiple partitions

Hello,

I'm working on a customer to convert his physical servers to vSphere 5.5 infrastructure.

I'm using converter 5.5 and have problems P2Ving one windows 2003 server with system disk with 2 partitions (C and E).

Physical Server

physical_disks.jpg

Disk 2: system disk with 2 partitions (C:, E: )

Vmware Converter

converter.jpg

I have converted in following way:

Partition C:, G:, F: together

Partition E: standalone (converter 5.5 doesn’t support conversion of multiple partitions on the same disk).

Result is I have one virtual machine with 3 vmdk (disks C, G, F) and another “fake” virtual machine with only one vmdk (disk E).

I have moved the disk E vmdk to the folder of the “real” vm and added it to the virtual machine.

Boot.ini file is as following:

timeout=30

default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windows Server 2003, Standard" /fastdetect

When I boot the virtual machine, I see the boot.ini menu, but the system doesn’t start and loop forever to boot menu.

Can anyone help me ?

thanks in advance

Best regards

Davide

After Conversion XP Hangs at Activation

$

I really hope someone is able to help. I'll try to be as thorough as possible in my explanation.

Here is the scenario. I have a Dell laptop with an OEM version of XP. I want to turn this into a Virtual Machine, then install Windows 7 on the laptop, then run the VM from within 7. However, I do not want the configuration of XP to change (the machine name and domain).

First I did the conversion (which took an act of Congress to complete succesfully). Then I needed to install the AHCI drivers. So I used my OEM disk and a floppy with the driver I needed and did a repair installation. And never during the repair installation did I get prompted for a product key.

Then I move my VM to a seperate machine (a Dell server). Windows boots up. I type in my password to login and it prompts me with You must activate this copy of Windows. Do you want to do it now? If I say No it logs me out. If I say Yes, the popup box goes away and I am left staring at my wallpaper. I've let it sit like that over night and nothing ever appears to happen.

The reason I moved the VM to the server is to avoid having duplicate names on the network. I have also checked the network connectivity of the server and it is fine. The VM shows that the virtual NIC is bridged but I don't really have a way to verify connectivity.

I know the OEM product key is a violation, but I plan on changing to a volume license as soon as I get the chance. I've tried using the SMBIOS.reflectHost = "TRUE" to see if that would let me login but it still prompts for activation (I expected that since it's on the server and not the laptop).

So my question is, what is causing XP to hang? From what I've read I think the Product Activation window is supposed to come up to either let me activate online or tell me to call, but I never get it.

Is there any solution other than changing the product key of the laptop to a volume license and then converting?

Thanks in advance!

Anyone have a script to remove all the HP/Compaq agents after conversion?

Hi,

With both old school P2V and the new converter tool, we have to uninstall about 10 HP agents/tools from "Add/Remove Programs", manually uninstall the HP  Network Configuration Utility, and delete two registry keys that "Add/Remove Programs" does not remove after the conversion is completed.

Does anyone have any sweet scripts or tools to do all this automatically?

Thanks

VMware P2V synchronization error. It thinks the volumes are file level.

Good Morning,

I am trying to virtualize a server with the sync option (Vmware Converter) to finalize the changes at a later date. All the volumes show as block level, but when I try to start the job I get "Synchronization cannot be enabled if one or more volumes require file-level cloning".

I have gone as far as moving the disks to a single volume (within Vmware Converter), but I get the same error.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi All,

I would like to know if sync can be started at any point of time of my choice....Like once the Job submitted (P2V) for conversion is completed. can i start sync on my own time.

Here I don't want to schedule the sync feature....because don't know when to schedule the sync feature.

Ajay

Actions

  • Rerun job a couple more times - failed
  • Convert only C:\ - failed
  • Run Check disk /R on C:\ - failed

Points to consider.

  • Next step would be to install converter locally but i want to avoid this for now.
  • No workarounds to be deployed, i.e. use acronis - must be able to proceed with converter alone
  • Normally a checkdisk resolves this issue for me.

Question: What other things can cause the following errorBlockLevelVolumeCloneMgr::CloneVolume: Detected a write error during the cloning of volume \WindowsBitmapDriverVolumeId=[93-DD-5B-0B-00-00-10-00-00-00-00-00]. Error: 37409 (type: 1, code:2338)'

I am testing a proof of concept for my company where we can capture any physical machine on our network and bring it into our Hyper-V cluster. The best way I have found to do this is with VMware ESXi and converter. I have setup a test Ubuntu VM that to capture to ESXi. I installed openssh-server on the VM and can ssh into it from the .69 Windows Server using Putty. When I go to convert the VM with VMware, Isetup the job and start it. It starts with 1% about 1 hr then 2% 3hrs 15min, then 3% 1hr, then 3% 1min, then failed at 3%. Here is the status the job ends with:

FAILED: A general system error occurred: connect (`10.160.0.65'): Network is unreachable connect (`10.160.0.65'): Network is unreachable connect (`10.160.0.65'):
Network is unreachable Network error. Host 10.160.0.65 key can't be retrieved. (return code 2)

I don't understand why this is happening. All your help is appreciated. I'll be at my desk to answer any questions or post any more needed info.

Thanks in Advance!

"unable to validate the destination. Error: vmodl.fault.SystemError" when converting windows xp 32bit physical system

we are trying to convert a windows xp 32bit physical system from an ibm t30 into a vm on

an esxi 3.5 system, and after filling out the 'specify destination host/resource' with the name

of my vctr, the converter finds and displays it correctly.  however, when I specify either an

esx server, or a resource pool, get message:

"unable to validate the destination. Error: vmodl.fault.SystemError

I know the password is right, and I used the administrator account when I tried this specifying

a vctr, and the root acct when I tried it using a stand-alone esx3.5 or esx3i host, but get the

same result.

Anyone seen this before and know how to get around it?

thanks...Vicki

vmware converter - live clone - ubuntu - failed to connect to iso

Hi

I have an Ubuntu x64 9.10 vm in which i want to live clone (to reduce the 2nd drives size which is preallocated).

vmware tools is installed but when it runs i get this error at 1% "failed to connect iso to remote vm"

I have tried this via a live clone in vcenter, and as a copy of this as a workstation, both end the same.

According to the doco, v4.3 supports ubuntu 9.10, i am using v5 of converter.

>> Does anyone know a solution to this issue ?

>> Why does vmware converter ONLY give me the option of cloning to infrastucture, and not to a disk location ?

(i am pretty sure if i was cloning a windows machine, i would get the option for a UNC path save?)

Thanks

The Vstor2 MntApi 1.0 Driver service failed to start due to the following error:

The system cannot find the file specified.

Product: VMware vCenter Converter Standalone Agent -- Error 29142.Could not start service Vstor2 MntApi 1.0 Driver.

Both remote and local installs fail.

Any ideas?

Unable to complete vCenter Converter agent installation on %server%. Errror code 1,603

I attemptred to convert a Windows 2000 Server SP4 server to a VMware ESXi server 4.1.

I started the process from a Windows XP PC running VMware-converter-all-4.3.0-292238 and I got the error "Unable to complete vCenter Converter agent installation on %server%. Errror code 1,603".

Reading in forums it looks that the right VMware Converter Standalone version is up to 4.1: is it correct?

To solve the problem I installed VMware converter standalone 3.x on the Windows 2000 box, but I don't think it is the best choice.

Can anybody please help understandiong what is the right way to convert a Windows 2000 server?

What permission are required for powered on source windows VM conversion using VMware converter

$

Hi,

The requirement is to use VMware Converter v6.1.1 to:-

  • Migrate a source windows VM server that is powered on
  • To another remote vCenter server
  • Conveter software installed on a separate VM in target environment

The VMware documentation is unclear. It states a numer of permissions are required at the datacenter level, but dosn't distunguish with whether the permissions are on source vCenter server, target vCenter server, or both.

When converting a powered on server, the converter server prompts for VM details rather than source vCenter server, therefore are the permissions relevant for source vCenter? We have an account with local admin rights to connect to source server.

Vmware converter also assumes the source server is physical rather than a VM (when converting powered on servers).

Thanks

Jas
